pleasanton the common denominator across all these tragedies guns gun for violence even in our state happens every day following the recent deadly shootings bay area lawmakers, josh becker and mark berman held a virtual town hall to discuss gun violence and prevention among the panelists dr. garon winnemu the director of the violence prevention research program at uc davis. one of the myths is that americans are somehow uniquely violent as people and that's simply not true if you compare us to other wealthy industrialized countries our rates of robbery and assault are actually lower than the average for wealthy industrialized countries and where we are unique is in our rate of fatal violence and that happens because we have a unique level of access to a consumer product that changes the outcome that product is firearms according to

gallup 45% of americans live in a household with a gun in california. we're background checks are required to obtain a firearm data shows the number of people looking to obtain a gun has drastically risen over the last two decades this graph from the abc 7 news data team shows that in 2002, california conducted roughly 680,000 firearm background checks in 2022 that number more than double to more than 1.4 million law enforcement has also cited the rise in privately manufactured ghost guns as a compounding problem here in california where the listen market is regulated major law enforcement agencies have sometimes reported that 30 to 50 percent of all the guns they recover in prime are these unserialized privately manufactured ghost guns. so what can be done does gun control even work the answer is an unequivocal? yes. there are a number of strategies

looking for an ally when it comes to dealing with gun violence and the damage that it inflicts on some in our communities go to abc 7 news.com/take action police are looking for aspect responsible for fatally shooting a man in san jose today. police say the shooting happened just after 1:30 pm on blossom river drive when officers arrived to the scene, they found one man fatally wounded investigators were asking for witnesses to come forward. this is san jose's ninth homicide this year one person was seriously injured in a fire earlier today in san francisco's russian hill neighborhood. when an abc 7 news crew arrived, but on the scene on leavenworth street flames were shooting out of the building's top floor firefighters. soon was trying to escape but was trapped and needed to be rescued that person suffered serious injuries a second person was treated at the scene and then released the fire started around 1:30 in the afternoon and was under control in about an hour the cause still under investigation. we're going to end.

landlords but abc 7 news reporter ryan curry found neither side likes the new laws. oakland will adopt new housing laws once the eviction more torin ends. those laws will protect tenants from evictions under certain circumstances, but still allow landlords to evict tenants who don't pay rent but some landlords say this will cause problems at this point. i'll be in foreclosure before i can evict for non-payment of rent hannah kirk says she has had numerous issues with her tenant for the past three years the new law says tenants cannot be evicted for missing payments during the pandemic. they also cannot be evicted if they owe less than one month of fair market rent which kirk offers i offer my unit for $800 a month. the room itself is 1969 so i have to wait three months in order to do anything

oakland councilmember nikki. fortunato bass says the new laws are made to phased out the moratorium but prevent many residents from becoming homeless. we're working to continue to protect our most housing insecure tenants and also responsibly phase out the moratorium. so that property owners can start collecting rent. however, some tenants say they still need more time a member of the oakland tenants union who is asking to stay anonymous says she is still recovering from the pandemic. she says she owns her own business and more money is slowly starting to come in, but it's not enough. right away. kirk says the only way for her to get away from her tenant is to sell her property. it's something she doesn't want to do but is considering i love my home and i would really love for a family to live in that home and enjoy it the way my

family did in oakland ryan curry abc 7 news. and update from the i-team tonight. san francisco. police. say a man seen on camera throwing eggs at passengers on a muni bus. all yelling racial slurs has been arrested and investigators say they've linked him to two other incidents as well 44 year old joseph benjamin pleaded not guilty today to battery and hate crime charges in addition to the egg throwing incident from february investigators. say benjamin has also been charging connection with a cheese throwing incident on a muty bus on christmas day and he's accused of assaulting immunity driver by spitting on him. also from the i-team, san mateo county is one step closer now to becoming a sanctuary county the board of supervisors passed an ordinance that prohibits the county from cooperating with ice without a federal warrant, but critics argue the legislation designed to bring more equality overlooks public safety abc 7 news item reporter stephanie. sierra has the latest an ordinance that aims to bring

more equality for asylum seekers and san mateo county passed with the 4-1 vote transfers to ice constitute double punishment for immigrants, but critics argue. the headline doesn't tell the whole story when a person who is a convicted rapist or child molester or or murderer is released from prison. they're not we will have no ability to work with ice in order to go ahead and deport that individual the ordinance by supervisor david canopy prohib. is all departments in san mateo county from using county funds to cooperate with requests from ice without a federal judicial warrant. i'm concerned about it supervisor ray mueller was the only one to vote against it. he would have supported the ordinance if it honored three exemptions for murder rape and child molestation. why didn't you support the three exemptions for those convicted of rape murder and child molestation when it comes to those sort of crimes. you're exactly right.
