the a's in oakland. we've just received statements from the team and the mayor. the potential final blow dealt a short time ago. first, our top story tonight. >> i feel like everything inside me out. ama: only see on seven. a mother remembering the life of her son. the man who stepped in to stop a shoplifter at a bay area home depot and was killed in the process. good evening. dan: thank you for joining us. that mother grieving her son blake moz. he was trying to stop a theft at the home depot where he worked but it was a fatal decision. ama: lauren martinez sat down with his family to hear how he's being remembered. >> it was a hard thing to do.

reporter: this mom is proud of her son. he had a heart for serving others. he worked his way up the boy scout ranks and achieve the highest honor of eagle scout. these keepsakes are now remembrances. >> he was my heart. my firstborn. and there's a here. reporter: tuesday afternoon, he was killed while trying to stop a theft at a home depot in pleasanton. he was a loss prevention employee. he was 26 years old. >> sees the heart of everyone. reporter: scouting continued on into his adulthood. he volunteered at a camp where he met his fiancee casey. >> they had seen each other for a long time. then they cite other differently. reporter: the couple volunteered together. they were planning their wedding for august 12 at the camp where

they met. >> open. reporter: for lori moz, she plans on remembering her son with home videos. her favorite baby picture and fun disney trips. >> his 21st disney trip. just mom and son. reporter: a favorite family tradition was being silly and baking christmas cookies together. many proud moments of her son and his memory will live on. >> just because he's not here right now doesn't mean that all those lives, all those people that he touched aren't going to pass that forward. he had a short life. only 26 years. but he lived it. reporter: he put people first and himself last. >> lost one of the good ones. reporter: lauren martinez, abc7news. ama: the boy scouts are planning to hold a memorial but remade

humans are still being made. dan: verge of following the raiders to las vegas. oaklands mayor has thrown in the towel and trying to get a deal to build a new waterfront ballpark. j.r. stone is following the story very closely. he's in the newsroom for us tonight. it sounds like it's over. reporter: very upsetting to hear what we heard tonight. the a's confirmed this evening that they've signed what's being called a binding purchase agreement for land not far from the las vegas strip, enough land for a ballpark. they say the process to build a ballpark in oakland has made little forward progress for some time. this comes after years of negotiation between the a's and the oaklands government over a plan to build a new ballpark at howard terminal. the plan has most recently passed through an environmental review but a great deal still has to be ironed out.the a's lee

coliseum expires next year. in a statement, the a's said, we've made a strong and sincere effort to stay here. we recognize this is very hard to hear. we are disappointed that we've been unable to achieve our shared vision of a waterfront ballpark. oakland mayor sheng thao said, yet it's clear to me that the a's have no intention of staying in oakland and have simply been using the process to try to extract a better deal out of las vegas. i'm not interested in continuing to play that game. the fans and our residents deserve better. given these realities, we are ceasing negotiations and moving forward on alternatives for a redevelopment of howard terminal. this doesn't necessarily mean it's over for the a's the bay area. but those are some of the strongest words we've heard from both sides.

many felt like this was going to happen for quite some time. as a sports fan and someone who has covered the a's for the last 12 years, it's extreme really sad to hear the a's president say something like that and to hear the oakland mayor say something like she said. the mlb commissioner is even quoted on here in favor of vegas. if you listen to his comments in spring training, that is certainly not a shock. back to you. dan: really remarkable turn of events here tonight. more on this as we go along. new development with the antioch police races text message scandal. john burris is going to announce a lawsuit tomorrow against the city and its police force. the scandal came to light in the district attorney's investigation and has spiraled with the city's mayor requesting an audit of the police department. that happened just yesterday. 20% of the forces on leave. several other members are under investigation. we reached out to antioch police for comment and we are waiting

for response. the chief has called the scandal an unfortunate situation. ama: we jump to abc 7 advancers. our chance to prepare you for key issues. i wait -- we wanted to focus in on the opioid crisis hitting our communities. governor newsom made a visit to san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood earlier today. his office says newsom and his cabinet held a private meeting on how to address fentanyl and opioid issues. governor newsom announced the so-called master plan for tackling the fentanyl and opioid crisis. $3.5 million to provide overdose medication to all middle and high schools. this brings us to a big move by the state of california to fight the opioid epidemic when it comes to teens. as melanie's law. melanie ramos overdosed on

fentanyl and died in the bathroom over her hollywood high school. melanie's mother speaking through an interpreter says she's going to be at the capital tomorrow. ? she says the pain she has is very big. she's going to go to sacrament to push for this law to pass so other kids don't go through what happened to her and the pain that she's going through. ama: the legislation would provide resources to schools to fight the fentanyl crisis. dan: our mission is searching for solutions, including climate change and our environment. california is at the forefront of going green and trying to reduce air pollution. a new report casts doubts about the state success. according to a report by the lung association, 98% of people live in a county that has unhealthy levels of air pollution. in the bay area, only sonoma county received an a grade. san francisco and marin both got

be. everyone else received a c or lower. nationwide, it's estimated one in three americans live in places with unhealthy levels of air pollution. the california air resources board is going to vote on two measures designed to reduce pollution and increase the number of zero emission vehicles on the road. tonight, we are getting a better idea of how bad the storm damage in the south bay this winter really was. new data from santa clara county alone estimates the damage there at $15.5 million. half of that was from the storms we had in december and january. the rest came in february and march. across the county, 20 locations saw a road erosion, landslides, flooding, and failures. ama: you may have felt it. a magnitude 3.8 earthquake hit the east bay and we are still seeing aftershocks. sandhya patel is here with what she is seeing right now. sandhya: aftershocks continued hours even after the original

earthquake. let me show you where it was centered just south of antioch. this happened shortly after 8:30. magnitude 3.7 so it was revised. the depth was about 10 which is deeper than what we are normally used to. as we check out about a dozen reports of aftershocks. highest magnitude was still 3.7. across the bay here into san francisco. a few people felt it. most likely it was near the greenville fault. once again, that magnitude 3.7 earthquake just south of antioch. dan: the sun will be shining tomorrow for it will be a very busy day in san francisco. ama: three different events bringing huge crowds to the

city, from the annual celebration of cannabis to a couple of big giants and warriors games. dan: tim johns has more on what you can expect. >> san francisco will be lit tomorrow. reporter: events happening around san francisco thursday. on the city's east side, the giants are set to play at oracle park just as a few blocks down, the warriors will kick off game three of their playoff run. across town at golden gate park, the annual 420 hippie festival kicks off at 10:00 a.m.. >> we have legal tested product. we have amazing retailers and brands that are selling legal cannabis. reporter: alex aquino is one of the organizers. he says they are expecting as many as 20,000 people to show up this year. combined with the other major events happening around san francisco, aquino is encouraging everyone to plan ahead. >> i recommend people take public transportation. we have shuttle buses after the event, going from hippie hill

down to the civic center. reporter: public safety will be top of mind. local leaders in san francisco say they are ready. that includes extra police officers on the roads and outside major venues, says the sfpd chief. >> those special events, we deploy for them. we will have officers working regular shift and overtime to supplement that. reporter: they are expecting significant traffic delays and congestion throughout the afternoon. they want everyone to have fun. they are advising a little caution. >> we prepare for large-scale events like this. our goal is to make sure people are safe. looking forward to seeing the city shine. reporter: tim johns, abc7news. ama: new developments with the injection -- jack and -- ejection of a rapper. the kings and rapper called the incident a misunderstanding. they clarified each 40 did not stand excessively during the game.

dan: a driver trying to avoid a traffic stop barreled through city streets and went through a parking lot. retirement age of 65 within the next 15 years to get replacing them is a challenge because training is expensive and that keeps potential recruits from getting in. when idea that was brought up during a congressional hearing today is to bump the retirement age to 67. >> no data shows a pilot is unsafe at 65. this arbitrary line forces pilots to retire when they have much to offer. dan: the last time the retirement age went up was in 2007 when it went from 60 to 65. that was a big jump at the time. now to a store you'll only see on seven tonight. ama: a first-ever meeting between a santa rosa woman who donated her kidney and a man who benefited from her decision. dan: j.r. stone was there with them today for these incredibly special moments. >> you changed my life. seriously.

you gave me another second chance in life. i'm forever grateful. thank you very much. >> i'm happy i could do that for you. reporter: tears from dominique who decided to donate one of her kidneys earlier this year at sutter health in san francisco. because of her decision, juan hernandez who had been on dialysis was given the gift of a new kidney. >> she gave me another chance at life. i'm more appreciative than anything. reporter: dominique didn't no one but was inspired to become an organ donor after celebrity selena gomez's kidney transplant. dominique is what some would call a nondirective donor. her kidney went to a match system that linked people across the country and in turn, four people receive new kidneys. >> that kidney got other pairs who had incompatible donors transplanted. at the end of that, at that chain, is next or kidney. we were able to donate that

kidney to someone on the waiting list. >> you so much. you did so much for my kid. reporter: there first-ever meeting wednesday comes as sutter health launches an all new living donor institute during national donate life months. three months post surgery, both healthy and well. >> i'm lost for words, you know? >> i didn't think i would be crying this much. >> i just want to say thank from the bottom of my heart. >> of course. i'm so happy that i could do this for you. >> seriously. iou one.
