still in the country. >> the president saying overnight he's working with allies and partners to assist those americans to the extent possible. and we are now learning exactly how the embassy evacuation mission was carried out. let's go to london. james, good morning to you. >> yeah, good morning. u.s. special operations forces have undertaken a daring mission to get u.s. embassy personnel out of sudan. three chinook helicopters took off, flying 800 miles. other countries are racing to do the same. this morning, personnel from the u.s. embassy are safely out of the country, rescued in an overnight mission by u.s. special operations forces. the pentagon called the operation fast and clean, saying three chinook helicopters flew from a u.s. air base in djibouti more than 800 miles through the

pitch-black darkness. on the ground for less than an hour, they saved dozens of people, including americans from the embassy and other nationals before making the 800-mile trip, president biden praising them. this is as leaders across the world scramble to pull their nationals out of sudan, a shaky cease-fire given only a small window of opportunity. >> pulling u.s. citizens out of a war zone is a challenge. in the case of sudan, so far inland, the airspace has been closed. >> saudi arabia evacuated their first group of foreign nationals. evacuees seen disembarking from a saudi ship saturday, claiming they were able to evacuate 157 people from 12 countries. the fighting between the two warring groups has only escalated as it enters the second week. gunfire heard in khartoum heard during a 72-hour cease-fire announced by both sides friday

>> good morning. president biden says he's receiving regular updates from his team on their efforts to help americans who are still in sudan, but the administration is making very clear there's no large-scale evacuation plan in the works to help those thousands of people who are still there. the state department says that it is in close contact with american residents in sudan's capital as the situation on the ground deteriorates. the white house said this week it is not standard practice to evacuate u.s. citizens living abroad. in a statement, president biden thanked u.s. embassy staff in sudan, as well as those service members who brought them to safety in the overnight operation. he also singled out djibouti, ethiopia, and saudi arabia, key to the mission but the white house is under scrutiny after the botched 2021 withdrawal from afghanistan. whit? >> we bring in martha raddatz.

martha, good morning to you. always great to have you. evacuations like this come with considerable risk, but pentagon officials say the situation in sudan was quickly deteriorating. what more are you learning about the decision to launch this operation? >> well, they had been planning this for several days. they wanted to take the first opportunity possible when they thought it was the safest to move those helicopters in, and move those americans out of there, because as we've been saying the situation is deteriorating by the day. fortunately the u.s. embassy is on the outskirts of khartoum, so the helicopters were able to land in a makeshift landing zone and safely take those americans out of there, but these are always dangerous. elizabeth mentioned afghanistan. this isn't kabul. khartoum isn't kabul. it's a very different situation. americans weren't being targeted. in fact, the warring sides are probably happy the americans are out there.

there's always the possibility of some sort of mistake, mistaking those helicopters for what they consider their opponent. >> different situation from afghanistan. martha, we noted the 16,000 americans still living in sudan. the pentagon says a larger scale evacuation just not on the table at the moment, but indicating they could assist in other ways. >> that's going to be tough, whit. you're talking about 16,000 people. many of those people are dual nationals. we should add that all of them were warned to leave sudan. people were warned not to travel to sudan in the last few weeks. it is going to be difficult, if they choose to leave, they choose to go over land as james pointed out, because it is very, very dangerous. even getting in touch with the state department is going to be difficult, handling 16,000 calls, even 5,000 calls, especially when you don't have a diplomatic presence on the ground. whit?

hospital in georgia. and he's been at that hospital, as you point out, for more than two weeks now, since his daughter reported that he suffered a medical condition. the all she would add to that is, quote, due to quick action, and great care, he's already on his road to recovery, but since that statement nothing from foxx's family or representatives about the nature of his medical issue. foxx has been here in atlanta, filming his new netflix project, called "back in action" with cameron diaz. the film paused production for a day after foxx went to the hospital. since his daughter's announcement, as you would imagine, there's been an outpouring of love and support online from his fans and some of his famous friends and costars, like viola davis and kerry washington. there's no telling when foxx might be able to leave the hospital and either head home or head back to the set here in atlanta. if this latest report is true, that he's, quote, awake and alert, that certainly is a little bit of good news this morning.

>> certainly is. we're thinking about him and wishing him well. phil, thank you for the update. to gas prices now. rising again as the summer travel season approaches. americans already paying more at the pump. alexis christoforous explains what's driving the increases and when we can catch a break. >> the unofficial start of summer is weeks away, and gas prices are on the rise. according to aaa, the price of a regular gallon of gas is a quarter higher than a month ago, but still better than the $4.12 a gallon last year, and much better than the record $5 a gallon we were paying last june. a couple of reasons for the recent price increase. major oil producing countries agreed last month to cut oil production by a million barrels a day beginning in may, and even though summer is still months away gas stations switched to the more expensive summer blend fuel in mid-march, adding 5 to

15 cents to a gallon of gas. here's the good news, relief may be on the way. price increases at the pump have started to slow down. gas this week rising only a nickel a gallon nationwide, far less than recent weeks, as crude oil prices continue to fall. crude is the main ingredient in gas, accounting for more than half the price of a gallon of fuel. the government reporting demand for gas dropped over the past week, just as oil refineries are coming back online after being shut down for maintenance during the winter and spring. gas prices are expected to stay below $4 a gallon this summer. aaa predicting prices will trickle back down after memorial day weekend. price shop before you fill up. it makes a difference. guys? >> it sure does. let's hope we don't get above that $4. >> yeah, exactly. >> back with weather. looks rainy behind you. >> yes. we had the storms roll through on the east coast, but texas was getting in on some of their own action.
