5:01 pm
charged with two felony counts of perjury for allegedly lying under oath during a murder trial. he has also been charged with one felony count of bribing a witness. detective tran lied about his connection to the witness and the payments to her under oath. alameda county district attorney pamela price released a video statement tuesday saying this stems from a 2011 murder in investigation. two men were convicted and sentenced to life in prison for shooting and killing a man in north oakland. the charges against the men were vacated last year. court documents say a key witness originally claimed to have seen the shooting but recanted her testimony, admitting she witnessed neither the shooting nor the people responsible for it. those documents also mentioned she admitted she was paid for her testimony by the oakland police department and officer tran, specifically in the form of cash and checks. i spoke with the witness earlier. she did not want to be interviewed, but says tran used her because he knew she needed to provide for her family district attorney price called these charges serious. she says her office has to now go through more than 100

previous cases to see if there was possible misconduct. my office now has to review at least 125 other cases that detective tran investigated. others in oakland want these charges dropped against officer tran immediately. there's no grounds, no bearing here that would indicate that the charges that they've charged this officer with are ever going to come anywhere. barry donelan, president of the oakland police officers association, says tran has spent years solving homicides in oakland. he says this move reflects negatively on the district attorney. it's clearly an effort to discredit homicide investigators in order to take people who've been convicted of homicide and get them out on the street in oakland. ryan curry, abc7 news. and also in oakland. a surveillance camera caught the moment when robbers shot a woman as she sat in a park at lunchtime today. happened at the fm. smith recreation center on park boulevard not far from lake merritt. you saw those two

minnie's arraignment did not happen as expected today. his attorney says that she's waiting on discovery in the case while the da's office says that she has received enough discovery like police reports, to enter a not guilty plea on her client's behalf. and argue his custody status. the stabbing death of cashapp founder bob lee is now unfolding in a san francisco courtroom. dozens of lee's friends and family were at court for what was expected to be a momentous arraignment moment is accused of stabbing and killing lee moments. attorney paula carney asked to delay today's arraignment. a judge agreed to do my job effectively. i need the police reports. it's like that's why i said that sort of thing. like it's not rocket science. if the police are going to make an arrest, they are duty bound to make these materials available to defense counsel. we have provided discovery on a rolling basis as we do in every case. she in my opinion, has sufficient evidence in this case to be able to enter a plea of not guilty on behalf of her client and argue his custody

status. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says lee's autopsy report isn't ready and that the medical examiner's office typically produces them within 60 days. i don't know why san francisco wouldn't be able to provide what any other county could provide in a timely way, jenkins said. the da's office was prepared for his arraignment to take place today. certainly it is to the disappointment of mr. lee's family and of our office that we are not being able to proceed forward with this case. mckinney's defense attorney says once she receives the discovery she requested, she'll file her opposition to the prosecutor's detention motion. kenney says mo money is not a flight risk. right now, he's being held without bail. people who possessed a greater financial means present more of a flight risk. certainly in a situation where they are facing life in prison. well, many sister who was at moments last court appearance was not in court today. the da's office has said she is the link between lee and mo. many i asked county

the hate piece that falls back on the city of antioch and their protocols of how they reprimand their officers because the hiring and firing you know, after all, rests with them. we come here today in support of good policing before the meeting with the da, members held a press conference at the antioch police department. catherine wade described what police texted about her son, mallard baldwin, who was mentioned in the da reports. this is one part of the text message about my son. when you talk about holding his legs open and beating him in his private part, this is from a police. these are from this these are police is discussing this, according to the city, close to 20% of the police department is now on paid leave, but up to 40% of the entire police force may have been involved. but according to data from the contra costa county public defender's office, patton says the understand the investigation will take time. but in the end, they don't want officers who are convicted to be allowed to remain in law enforcement. this has been a

5:15 pm
dozens of people on both sides expressed their concerns. supporters of the legislation argue it will bring more equality to people seeking asylum in san mateo county and prevent collusion from ice. but opponents argue part of it overlooks public safety. supervisor ray mueller, the only one to vote against, presented a number of charts clarifying that he supports the intent of the legislation, but wanted there to be specific exemptions for immigrants who commit violent crimes such as murder, rape or child molestation. he says he's concerned those released from prison and deported will come back into the community to retaliate in county law enforcement won't be able to intervene. supervisor david canepa, who authored the legislation, says immigration officials will still cooperate with any federal criminal investigation. but to be clear, the county will not under this ordinance, have a comment. the debate on whether or not to include the amendments became the sole focus of the meeting as lengthy public comment was raised from immigrant rights advocates, community members and
5:16 pm
victims of crimes, including sexual assault. while both sides were heard, numerous people called out to condemn the personal attacks made by supervisor canepa against supervisor mueller. here's how it started. but let me tell you this where you live in menlo park, it is the latino community . it's all these other communities that make your kale salad when it comes to your white linen tables where you eat. we're preparing your food. we're picking your produce, but you want to vilify us. you want to vilify us. you don't know anything. as i have already shared, there are members of the community that support me wholeheartedly. i understand that not everyone agrees with the position that they take. and i taken this hearing, but i think it's unfortunate the level of vilification of those thoughts and mind that are taking place. supervisor mueller referenced the ai team's
5:17 pm
reporting last night, revealing at least 35 immigrants convicted of serious felonies in san mateo county from 2018 to 2021. many of whom had a long history of prior arrests. we tried to speak with supervisor canepa about this data, but we were told he was unavailable. today he criticized our report but has yet to respond to any of our requests to share the facts that we have presented. well, of course, stay posted with any follow up and perhaps he will. all right. thanks, steph, very much. coming up, hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. 8 pounds of crystal meth and coke as well as guns. now all recovered after police in san jose bust. seven illegal underground casinos and arrest the mastermind of the operation . public safety is something we all care about now. our exclusive tool gives you the power to see exactly what's happening in your area. understand crime trends. check out the numbers, compare the data neighborhood safety tracker only from abc seven. meet a
