seven news and i was terrified. i i have to admit i was terrified. until now. i'm still scared. and then i want to find out more about what happened. a stabbing at a high school in walnut creek. the student suspect now accused of attempted murder. but it's what the vice principal did that is drawing praise tonight. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. and i'm amanda. school district officials sent parents a note saying a northgate high freshman student stabbed another freshman apparently toward the back of campus by the school's pool and softball field. now, we have since learned that the victim, a girl, is currently in care at a nearby hospital. we're waiting an update on her condition tonight. we do have those new details on how a vice principal stepped in. abc's seven news reporter j.r. stone is hearing from parents and students in the neighborhood and has the latest . we were around the sophomore, the softball bleachers, and then we see our vice principal running towards something. we're

like, what's going on? like, it's kind of goofy, like what's going on? audrey kirk hart, a student at northgate high school in walnut creek, describing the moments after officials say a ninth grade boy stabbed a ninth grade girl. we knew somebody was bleeding and we were just scared, like what happened? like maybe it was just like an injury or something. but once we heard somebody got stabbed, we were like, this is crazy. like, what's going on? officials say they received a call from the school around 1 p.m. saying that there had been a stabbing. tamara beinart says her son heard the commotion and then saw a vice principal not only helped catch the teen stabbing suspect, but hold him down to our vice principal. i was the one that was able to tackle him. somebody told me that he ran after the attacker because he tried to run away and i just talked to him actually right now saying that it confirming it was true. so he had to hold them down until before authorities got there. so my son just got out of a class and he had saw the gentleman,

the vice principal choke holding him, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital. police now saying they believe the stabbing was an isolated incident and just the two students, parents and students alike say they are proud of the heroic actions of their vice principal. next they feel better. i think about him personally that just makes it even better that he's, like willing to put his life on the line for school. our vice principal and our principal, they are just amazing individuals. and they we do a great they do a great job for this community. t the teenage suspect here is facing attempted murder and mayhem charges he is being held at contra costa juvenile hall on no bail in walnut creek, jr. stone, abc seven news. new developments in oakland where the teachers union announced today members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. now this does not mean teachers are definitely walking

out, but union leaders can now call a strike at any time negotiations with the school district have been ongoing. district officials say they were still at the table as of 9:00 tonight. one of the primary issues is pay. our proposals are providing stability for our schools by demanding usd pay our entire bargaining unit, a living wage. educators need enough money to be able to stay in oakland last week, the school district went to a state board to try to block the strike, since it would coincide with ap testing. the district believes monday, may 1st, would be the earliest day for a potential strike. may 25th is the last day of school. all right. to the south bay, where a recent string of crashes in san jose has put the focus back on the city's all too common problem. the three most recent pedestrian crashes you see here all happened within a two and a half week period of time. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez is looking into the city's attempt to slow down this problem. traffic deaths in

san jose are adding up in 2023. as of today, ten people have lost their lives on san jose streets due to crashes last year. by this date we had almost 30 victims. we never want to say that we're doing well when we still have people dying from crashes, even though the number is lower than in 2022. any loss is significant. seven of those ten deaths this year are pedestrian was last tuesday. police say a driver off north white road veered into the southbound lanes, struck a man standing in a bike lane and crashed into a house. two days later, that pedestrian man died of his injuries and this week, another crash turned fatal. san jose police say on sunday, april 9th, a driver attempting to make a left turn from north 11th street onto east santa clara street hit a woman walking in a marked crosswalk on monday. police say she died of her injuries. it doesn't appear that the driver was intoxicated or distracted and did remain at the scene in what's cooperative with the investigation. it's still

was a cause of lost life on the streets of san jose. police say the investigation is still pending. we'll do about five large corridor wide projects this year. meanwhile, the department of transportation is continuing their vision zero action plan, making changes to particularly deadly roadways, perhaps create a bike lane or narrow a traffic lane. we may repaint the street to slow traffic down mckee road on the east side of san jose is known to be a hot spot for speeding and distracted driving. starting this summer. this area will undergo some big safety improvements. the city will install new median islands, upgrade existing curb ramps and modify traffic signals. people know that speeding, which is our number one known cause of fatal crashes, they know that it's a problem, but they don't see themselves as part of that problem. the department wants drivers to know they could be a part of the solution if they slow down in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news.

flooding threats in the sierra are now leading to a partial closure of yosemite starting friday night until at least next week, maybe even longer. all of the melting snowpack is pushing its merced river up to flood stage. as with many other central valley lowlands, today, governor newsom saw first hand the flooding in the tulare basin . and once bone dry the tulare lake has now reformed because of the melting sierra snow. the governor touched on some of the challenges the state has on its hands. you can't just raise one portion of a levee without considering the impact. and another portion there, unintended consequence. so this requires cross jurisdictional engagement, a county to county, city to city. so many different boards, so many different administrators, so many different points of view. tulare lake, dried out decades ago, but returns periodically during extremely wet winters. it was once again the largest freshwater lake west of the mississippi. so let's turn to abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. now for more on this

meeting started at about 5:00 and the public is being heard. you say addressing homelessness is a high priority. your constituents say access to affordable housing is a crisis. the opportunity is now. it is an extremely busy, busy intersection. a liquor store directly across the street and a 7-eleven with neon blinking lights where people who have problems with substance abuse is a poor, poor suggestion. the project would create 30 units at lawrence expressway and benton street. again, the meeting continues. our next breakthrough keeps us in the south bay, where today we saw a three decade long fight come to an end over a controversial statue. san jose city workers finished taking down the 16 foot tall, 12,000 pounds statue of thomas fallon. many in the south bay's mexican and indigenous communities saw the former san jose mayor as a symbol of american imperial ism.

firefighters in the united states, went to went into immediate action and rendered life saving medical care to save this infant. several hours later, two men were found with gunshot wounds at an apartment complex near the west oakland bart station. one of them died. police leadership say they are frustrated by the violence. the common denominator here is and we see all over the place is the saturation of firearms in our city streets and the willingness for people to settle differences and pull the trigger and not care where that bullet goes. earlier today, another shooting, this one caught on camera here. two suspects tried snatching the purse of a woman sitting at the fm smith rec center park during lunchtime. she resisted, chased after the two and was shot by one of them. now, the victim did survive in all of these shootings. no arrests have been announced. we want to make sure you're getting the full picture when it comes to safety in your neighborhood. you can use this

tool to see a breakdown of crime trends where you live by the abc7 neighborhood safety tracker on the home page of abc7 news. com part of building a better bay area means keeping an eye on the climate and our environment. and tonight scientists are worried about a trend that they're noticing with whales around san francisco bay. abc7 news reporter tim johns is here. and tim, there's one whale in particular that is awfully puzzling for local scientists. yeah. dan that's right. now the marine mammal center estimates that that whale arrived in the bay on february ninth. so that would mean it's been around for about 75 days. just to put that into perspective, that amount of time shatters the previous record where a whale spent 46 days inside the bay. it's certainly exhilarating. it was a special sight for jay andrews late last week. andrew says he was kayaking in the bay when all of a sudden he spotted a whale. you can go on whale watches and you can see whales and you can drive along certain parts of the california coast and see whales,

you know, pretty close, but never from a kayak side. artists say that whale has been in the bay a record 75 days and counting. it's one of eight that's believed to have come through the golden gate strait this year. and that's also unusual. usually it's more like 2 or 3 gray whales. that's been a significant amount of time in the bay. lane works with the marine mammal center in marine county. she says while the whales might be fun to see their presence isn't always a good thing. we do think that the gray whales are coming into the bay because they don't have enough food. essentially to make it all the way up on their migration. anne wayne says climate change has altered the habitats of gray whales as prey. that's forcing the whales to look for food sources and places they normally wouldn't go, like the bay. but that comes with risks too. we're very worried about ship strike as it's been a cause of death for several other whales that have washed up. experts say if you're out on the water and encounter a whale, the best thing to do is keep your distance. they also encourage

people to call the marine mammal center. we use these community sightings often to help us go out and find these whales to photo id them, take information on their behavior. scientists say they only try to guide whales out of the bay in extreme circumstances. so for now, they're hoping this one find its way out on its own. in the studio, tim johns, abc seven news. let's hope that happens. tim, thanks very much. tributes have come in from all over honoring the legendary artist, actor and social activist harry belafonte. he died today from congestive heart failure. belafonte sang his way into the hearts of millions starting in the 1940s. he would rise to true stardom in the 50s, gaining the nickname king of calypso for his take on caribbean folk music. but in the 60s, he also turned his focus to becoming a champion for social justice. my life, based upon how i survived the stings rather than the number of awards and accolades and praise that has come my way, i'm grateful. as one of martin
