district say now is not the time to strike, especially with a month of school left. >> you want to strike? i need you to strike after school, i need you to strike saturday and sunday, i need you to strike at 7:00 in the morning, but at 8:30, i need you to be in those classrooms. anser: kia brown as a parent of a sixth grader. she says many parents are still struggling, impacted by the pandemic. rome wants to finish the year strong, especially high school seniors. >> a lot of the especially oakland, are low performing schools, you know, and they have been for decades. and as parents, we want and we need to have better for not just our kids but for all kids. anser: teachers have been working without a contract since october. teachers union has 21 proponents -- proposals on the table, ranging from class-size to

salary. the district is offering a 22% raise based on a pay schedule. >> they are making the time when a strike is appropriate, -- there may be a time when a strike is appropriate, but that time is not now. anser: they are still striving to exercise the oversight, prompted by spending and receivership. it is highly dependent on other items proposed, which will require funding. >> we want to do all that it takes to avert a strike, but we know it is important to have that as a potential tool, should we need to use it. anser: a teacher and part of the bargaining team says in addition to the district's demand that teachers work two hours more per week of the pay raise being offered is only two certified teachers, and not all staff, such as school nurses or psychologists. the union says that means 64% of the membership would not be eligible for a salary increase requests for us, that is not the right approach.

early afternoon, which means you do have to keep this in mind. uv index will be very high and an 8. the time to burn is 15 minutes to 25 minutes in the most intense part of the heat as the sun's angle is higher between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. very important to protect yourself you're the forecast includes big changes, coming up. ama: thank you. a brush fire is burning near little creek in san bernardino county. the knob fire ignited around 10:00 a.m. near 138 and pine canyon road. fire officials say it initially started as a controlled burn, a claim that forest service representative's are denying. it has spread across 160 acres. no injuries or threats to structures. dan: can the warriors get a win on the road to sacramento? if they plan to get to the next round, they are going to need one

ama: today, officials in san francisco kicked off key annual asian american and pacific islander's heritage month. the month-long celebration in may includes festivities from performances, film screenings, workshops, and more. >> nothing m live more than these activities, festivals, and celebrations, and the asian is at the heart of those activities. san francisco has the oldest china towns in the nation. san francisco will hold the asia-pacific economic corporation leadership summit, mode -- more widely known as aipac. it brings leaders from asia-pacific regions to collaborate and tackle global

initiatives. dan: in the south bay, a big push for more filipino representation and recognition at san jose state university. the role of filipinos in key historical moments have been overlooked for too long. abc 7 news reporter is zach fuentes has more. zach: it continues to grow could this arch on the san jose state university campus is the movement he led for better wages and working conditions for farmworkers. members of local filipino organizations are calling for recognition on leaders of their community. >> the arch is a damn insult! where is his picture? zach: a picture of the man he and san jose state university is larry itleon, who led farmworker strikes and eventually worked right alongside cesar chavez.

>> their contribution is not in history, or what we would call mainstream history. done to change that on a larger scale, san jose state students are working to bring recognition on their campus. >> we are calling for an art installation here, built on the side of the cesar chavez arch, for the president and the campus planning board to get us a budget of $100,000 plus to go ahead and do an art installation here on campus. zach: we reached out to san jose state for comment get a spokesperson said a group of students met with staff and the division of student affairs to share their idea for the monument, with staff expressing an attempt to follow-up. should a request be submitted, we would receive appropriate consideration. students say they hope the president will hear them out. the next meeting is set for
