the hall of justice where the case will be back before a judge this morning. amanda: we will be in the courtroom at 9:00 a.m. the public defender claims the suspect was actually defending himself when he allegedly attacked the former fire commissioner, carmignani. that attack happened on april 5. the public defender's office is ac of being linked to eight attacks on homeless people. they released a video from a november incident, claiming that person spraying a homeless man with pepper spray is carmignani. authorities say carmignani has not offered his testimony to police or the d.a. regarding the attack you suffered, which could jeopardize the case. they sea there is no intention of dismissing the case but carmignani's help is needed. we checked with the police about

restaurant and a separability and with 125 beds with half are all going to the unhous control of the park has been a battle between the neighbors and university. in 2022, protesters took on police in an attempt to stop construction. the court cannot move forward with student housing on people's park until it addresses problems in the environmental impact report. there were questions about how loud the students would be into whether the university looks for alternative sites for student housing. the university has been dealing with a lack of student housing. the university said it would provide a shelter for about four dozen people who sleep at the park during construction. the proposal is currently blocked in the lower courts. kumasi: santa clara has delayed the approval of 30 units of

reggie: a study is revealing one of the largest patches of pollution is teeming with researchers are trying to see what it means for the ocean and our coast. spencer christian tells us more. >> this is a cool place. reporter: this marine ecologist has always considered the frog fish a remarkable creature, but not for the reason that has her attention instead of its normal habitat, this one was taken from a disaster zone, a massive stretch known as the great pacific garbage patch. >> the thing that is interesting about the garbage patch is it is re-created essentially a

floating coastline that has a three-dimensional structure that allows the use species to live there, a substitute environment. reporter: a substitute environment made up of an estimated 80,000 tons of plastic and trash floating in the pacific. we got a close-up look last year, with a boat overflowing with the cargo. mary directs that have expanded into an unexpected program of scientific research and providing specimens. >> we have discovered a tremendous amount on the expeditions. and if you look closer, you can see things that are growing out there. >> this is a mussel. reporter: growing and thriving. back at the smithsonian, they

are identifying specimens from what are believed to be about 46 different species. everything from crustaceans to large fish. and with them are several questions. if plastic can support could they also spread into the marine food chain or carry invasive species from one continent to another? >> if the coastal species only found on one side of the pacific are able to live out their lives, reproduce and perhaps grow on these floating garbage patch areas, they could get close enough to the other side of the pacific, to our coast. reporter: many key questions are still left to be answered. but in the meantime mary says her organization is hoping to add a new vessel in the future, joining a fleet that now has a dual mission -- to understand the effects of the garbage patch as they clean it up. spencer christian, abc7 news.

kumasi: most of yosemite valley will be closed starting tomorrow because of flooding. the closure will start at 10:00 p.m. and lasted till wednesday, may 3. reservations for campgrounds and law gene will automatically be canceled into refunded, but that is not stopping hundreds from trying to visit before hand to take in the spectacular sites. >> it is beyond beautiful. oh ho ho ho, with snow and water. oh my gosh, are you kidding me? the river is usually relaxed, bu t as it intel behind me it is not very relaxed right now. kumasi: i am here for the excitement. reggie: they are pumped up. kumasi: there are some issues, because the roads are wet, the water is rising and at the merced river is moving rapidly.
