-- >> officers responded to a report of a shooting at the store. police say they found someone with a gunshot wound who has been transported to a nearby hospital. there's been new -- no update on the condition. we spoke to a woman tonight who says she's friends with the victim. she was at the checkout register when she heard two shots and saw her friend collapsed. next i'll we heard was boom boom and she dropped to the floor. that was that. he didn't say nothing. he picked up the gun and shot twice. the people that were in the star

-- store started charging at him. reporter: the friend says the victim was 19 years old. investigators haven't said what led up to the shooting. they've not said who fired shots but did detain a person possibly involved with the shooting. this is still an active investigation and police will be working throughout the night. tim johns, abc7news. dan: let's shift things now and turn to the weather. we had our first spare the air day of the season. ama: we are in the clear for tomorrow but another warm day in store. let's get a first look at the forecast with sandhya patel. sandhya: get ready to feel the heat again and our inland communities. today, we felt it. high temperatures into the low 90's in fairfield. right along the coast, half moon bay, 61 degrees. microclimates surfacing again. it is feeling like summer. 90 degrees in antioch. 88 in walnut creek.

77 in oakland. 60 degrees in sharp drop in temperatures coming from tomorrow to sunday. 86 in santa rosa. 70 by sunday. livermore from 90 to 71. san jose from 87 to 69. sunday, even bigger changes. showers and snow showers early next week. tonight, the concern is the fog. for your morning commute, fog will be an issue. i will be back with a full look at the forecast, coming right up. dan: a large portion of yosemite valley is closing because of the threat of flooding. the closure starts at 10:00 and will go through at least wednesday. reservations are automatic -- automatically being canceled and refunded. the merced river is expected to hit flood stage soon because of the melting snow in the mountains. ama: tonight, hundreds are still

without power in san francisco and one business tells us they are losing thousands of dollars because of this. the outage is being blamed underground fire wednesday night. j.r. stone has been working the story and found that the impact is a big one. reporter: this is all new video showing what's called a vault or underground transformer fire that burned wednesday night in san francisco. flames could be seen shooting out of this manhole and smoke coming out of this one near clay and montgomery. >> there's a big ball of orange flames with black smoke that billowed up out of two different manholes. reporter: the fire is out but so are the lights for hundreds of customers. >> just hoping that we get the power back up as soon as possible. reporter: the owner of the lounge tells us the power went out wednesday night during a private event which was forced

to end early with tabs left open. he was told the power may not come back on until 10:00 a.m. saturday, a huge loss on a very busy weekend. >> you have the convention with the security. you also have the warriors game which sold out. then weekends are typically our biggest night. you are looking at an estimate of 50 k plus, plus the perishable stuff that's no longer good. reporter: there was talk of bringing in a generator for this location but a large one would be needed and management believes it would be too loud for the residential neighborhood. these small generators are going full blast at the end of the block for a special event. one that drew dozens of people, eager to meet and listen to japanese architect -- who is speaking at a location without electricity. the board of supervisors president says the fire department responded within three minutes but it took png --

pg&e 45 minutes to get there. >> it's a mess. pg&e has a lot of explaining to do as to how they allowed the fire to burn this long. reporter: those with pg&e tell their crews are working to try to get the power back on. they also say the cause of the fire is still under investigation. j.r. stone, abc7news. dan: if you take part, you will like this. bart is improving its train schedule with new times during peak commute hours. you won't have to wait any longer than 20 minutes for trains. there will be more frequent trains on nights and weekends. yellow line riders will wait only 10 minutes on weekdays before 9:00 p.m. more transfer options. this new schedule rolls out in september. ama: tomorrow, tech workers in the bay area will be looking for new jobs.

a bunch of new layoffs. dan: lift cutting a quarter of its workforce, slashing a thousand jobs. they will get 10 weeks of pay. the san francisco-based rideshare company says it is restructuring to better meet the needs of riders and drivers which means saving money as well. we are keeping track of tech layoffs because of the impact on the bay area. the layoff tracker is on our website. go to abc7news.com. ama: students at uc berkeley are occupying a campus library for the seventh straight day. they are protesting you see berkeley's decision to shut down its amp wrote -- anthropology library. it's causing an inconvenience for students. students plan to occupy until the campus rescinds the closure. >> uc berkeley is saying, when they close libraries like these, is that they don't care

the accessibility of these materials and the accessibility of this knowledge for the public. ama: a statement from uc berkeley says, regarding the library closure, we wish the library could remain open but that's not an option at this point. senators have announced a new bipartisan bill to ban children under the age of 13 from joining social media platforms. the bill was introduced yesterday and would make tech companies get parent consent for teenagers to join. this includes the social media platforms twitter, facebook, and tiktok. lawmakers say legislation will help tackle the mental health crisis in the country which some experts believe stems from social media. >> the number of our important allies in the world are taking steps in the direction of making the internet healthier and safer for kids. the united states is behind it all to kappa -- catch up. ama: there's a pilot program to verify age using government identification. it still has a long way to go before becoming law. dan: interesting news about the

place. we don't want another transplant team. >> another major league team or another professional sport outside the aces. we have the nights. the town is going to blow up. reporter: according to a headline from the associated press, they question if vegas can support another pros boards team. do you think this is the revival for the oakland a's? >> it could be. i think the aces came from another location and they were brought here and that team found success fast. reporter: i'll visit -- elvis isn't quite on board. >> maybe i will go to a game or two. reporter: the next big hurdle is securing the $500 million public financing needed to move the team to the valley which has come with opposition. >> if you want to leave oakland and come here, don't ask us to pay for it. >> look at the raiders. everyone was like, the raiders. they are a big part of our community now.

dan: former tv politician jerry springer died at his home today after illness. haley is best known for the jerry springer show that launched in the early 90's. he served as the mayor of cincinnati in 1977 and was a tv news anchor. jerry springer was 79 years old.

ama: a judge will release garrett dodi from jail after former fire commissioner don carmen yanni didn't show up in court to testify today. he's accused of striking him with a metal rod on april 5. prosecutors don't agree with the decision and say the former commissioner couldn't testify due to the medication he's taking for his injuries. the public defenders office double down by releasing new video which they believe shows him initiating the altercation. prosecution denied these claims. his friend was also upset about the release. >> why in the world couldn't they have done a zoom call? why wasn't the district attorney actively making this happen? >> unless he's credible and believable, they don't have a prosecution. ama: he is required to check in with law enforcement once a -- once a week. dan: a freight train delay it -- to railed along the mississippi river today. two of the train cars carrying

hazardous batteries. crawford county emergency officials say the batteries were contained after both cars washed ashore. everyone on the train was located. only one needed medical attention. this follows recent irrelevance across the country which have raised major concerns about the industry. in the meantime, the california air resources board passed ambitious new rules to limit pollution from trains. they need federal approval to take effect. the rules would ban older diesel powered locomotive engines and would ban trains from idling for more than 30 minutes at a time. even if approved, this wouldn't take effect until 2030. california is the first in the nation to take this step. the goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality around ports and rail yards. ama: a nonprofit is helping high school students prepare for the next big milestone, college. they hosted a budgeting for college workshop for students at independence high school.

students were taught lessons for managing expenses, submitting an application, accessing resources , and more. the mission is to create educational equity and opportunities for low income and first-generation students. >> money matters budgeting for college workshop. it's designed to get students to think about how much college costs and the expenses associated with it. a lot of the times, we think that it's just tuition that you have to pay but there's a lot more. ama: they offer courses for students on saturdays as well. you can check out the events on its website. dan: one of the nicest little things about spring is berries. strawberry season is getting off to a slow start because of the rain. ama: at least one you pick farm in gilroy is days away from opening. dan: lauren martinez has the story. >> we got a little different stuff. strawberries, blackberries.

reporter: this farm variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. their biggest seller is strawberries. >> in normal season, mid april. unfortunately due to the cold and wet rain, we are basically delayed by three weeks. reporter: because of back-to-back storms, they haven't been able to work the field since the end of december. >> normally i would have cabbage, i would have some lettuce, carrots. we haven't been able to plant anything at all. we are going straight from winter to summer. reporter: with the warmer weather, the first berries are turning red. >> nice and healthy. big leaves. plenty of nutrients. reporter: 90% of the business is a you pick farm, open to the public. the remaining 10% comes from purchases from local restaurants. >> what do you think? the best strawberries in the bay area. reporter: the farm is losing out

on through weeks of picking. he doesn't plan on increasing prices. one pound of berries will remain five dollars. >> right now, no. we are trying to keep the same prices as we did last year. on the longer term, i don't know yet. reporter: on wednesday, he planted his summer crops that will be ready after the fourth of july. >> it's weird. three weeks ago, there was still standing water. now we are out here and it's 90 degrees. reporter: despite the anxiety, he considers his farm very lucky. >> every single white flour that you see here will be a blackberry. we have a lot of blossom. i'm happy. i was afraid that i was going to lose a crop but this looks good. reporter: the season opener will be saturday, may 6. lauren martinez, abc7news. dan: it's been tough but though strawberries to look good.
