4:00 pm
now. another blow to san francisco after 35 years in business in the city, nordstrom announces plans to close its doors for good. >> just the latest business to abandon downtown in. good afternoon. i'm christine zee and i am julian glover. we'll get to the nordstrom closure in just a few minutes. >> but first up, though, possible thunderstorms over the bay area. >> may gray here right on cue. >> oh, for sure. spencer christian is here now with a look at what you can expect today. spencer okay. >> kristin and julian, those skies are certainly gray and there's still the possibility of thunderstorms here in the bay area. i'll give you a satellite radar image of the storm right now. graphic image showing the structure of that storm and the counterclockwise circulation kicking up numerous thunderstorms in the central valley right now, bringing mainly showers into the bay area up from our south. and you can see the center of that storm just on the coastline there. and that pattern is going to continue for a while. now, we don't have the gusty wind right now that we had yesterday. winds are much tamer, but we have a couple of gusty spots in
4:01 pm
halfmoon bay and down at san jose. so moving along, taking a look at the exclusive abc7 storm impacts failed. this storm is a light level one through tonight and tomorrow. there still the possibility of showers and brief downpours and still a chance for isolated thunderstorms and maybe even some hail and snow levels down to about 4000ft. here's the forecast animation starting at 5:00 this afternoon, going through the evening commute hours, we'll still see some scattered showers, maybe occasional downpours. there are of course, could be slippery roadways. later tonight, it becomes more active, the storm does. and overnight into the morning commute before we finally see the storm moving farther to our south and losing its effect on this impact. i should say, on the bay area. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. jillian okay, thank you, spencer. >> now back to the big story here. a major loss for downtown san francisco. nordstrom planning to close both of its stores, citing difficult conditions. the nordstrom at westfield mall will close in august and the nordstrom rack at market and fifth streets will close in july. nordstrom has
4:02 pm
anchor the mall for moren 3 years now. this is just the latest in a growing list of stores that have closed in the last few months near market street in downtown san francisco, and several have announced impending closures, including anthropologie and saks, off fifth. so joining us live now is abc7 news insider phil matier. so phil yeah about 20 stores in the union square area since 2020. huge loss. and is it a sign of san francisco's economy? how do we take this? it is. >> it's a huge loss. >> more of a symbolic one than actual dollars and cents. the last couple of years nordstrom has been sort of downsizing at the westfield mall. there was even talk of putting offices in on a couple of floors. they went through a permitting process. it was approved and things pretty much stopped in part, i suspect, because office space isn't what it used to be in san francisco, the value is diminished. we have empty office buildings. okay? it's not the first time nordstrom's has pulled out of a san francisco location. a couple of years back. they did it at
4:03 pm
stonestown mall. but there's a difference here. what you're seeing there is an anchor of the city's retail district, this huge sort of beautiful mall filled with stores. the question is, who could be next and what does it mean for that entire block of shops in an area that is already seeing empty storefront after empty storefront? as you noticed, as you noted, some 18 have closed since the pandemic and there's not a lot of signs of big returns. ross dress for less is going to open up a second location right across the street from where nordstrom is. but you got to admit, that's a drop in a tourist perception from nordstrom's to drop. ross dress for less. >> absolutely. in terms of prestige and all that as well. right. so nordstrom in their email only cited changing dynamics in downtown san francisco westfield mall. they're the owner. they say that that this underscores the deteriorating situation in downtown san francisco. what do we make of that? well i was talking with one staffer at the
4:04 pm
mayor's office who said nordstrom was politely exiting, saying things aren't like we'd like them to be. >> but the westfield deteriorating conditions comment was like taking a blowtorch to it. and yes, what we're to make of it is that this is the ongoing question of deteriorating downtown san francisco. you know, san francisco's downtown was living off tech. it was living off office tourism and retail. those were the big drivers down there. the offices are empty. and now the retail is getting empty. and it's not going to be easy to get somebody to come in and take the space and more space could empty out as well. and christian, there's a fear that we could be reaching some kind of tipping point. too many empty storefronts lead to fewer people. fewer people, more empty storefronts. how do you reverse that cycle? it's been very difficult. internet shopping changes in people's habits as to where they want to go and unsafe conditions which one do you pick to start fighting first? >> right. it is a cycle and there's no quick easy solution. all right. we'll keep this
4:05 pm
conversation going. thank you so much, phil, and we'll get more reaction coming up on abc seven news at five as well. and now to that developing news out of davis, where a series of stabbings has people concerned for their safety. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in davis with the latest on the investigation. anne, we just got an update from police moments ago. lena julie, julian, moments ago, we heard from officials here at uc davis that any classes being taught after 6:00 tonight must now be taught remotely at least for the time being. >> and while the search is still on for any possible suspects, they say they're bringing in some added officers from other bay area campuses for extra support and say tonight alone they will be tripled. the number of officers right here on campus for the safety of their students . it's just as of today, we have worked with our academic senate to have a policy now where every class that ends after 6 p.m. will be taught remotely. swift
4:06 pm
action from uc davis officials after a third stabbing in less than a week near their campus, leaving students like 20 year old camille romero, understandably on edge. it almost feels like a movie or something. >> and i know everyone in our community is just really scared. >> two people have been killed starting with 50 year old david breaux. found dead with stab wounds last thursday morning in central park. the second was 20 year old uc davis student karim abu najim. fatal stabbed in sycamore park saturday night where a memorial of flowers and notes sits in his honor. and monday night, a third victim, which police describe as a woman in her 60s, was brutally stabbed through the tent she was living in near second and l street, which prompted a shelter in place. alert davis police department first news. >> lock your doors and stay inside of your house. suspect give up now or you will be bit
4:07 pm
by the dog. >> the description that was provided for the stabbing last night is substantially similar to the description that was provided by the witness in the second homicide at this point, we're still determining whether the two are related. davis police chief darren patel says they can't definitively say all three stabbings are connected to the attacks with knives were particularly brutal and violent. i still feel that there is some sort of very nervous and then very fragile, you know, atmosphere around here. >> davis parent and lecturer at uc davis, utah, anton, says that's why she's taking new safety precautions. >> i ordered a pepper patch on amazon and then there was like adt, something like that. a alarm system, i think i consider , you know, installing that. meanwhile police are fielding hundreds of tips. >> patrol officers have been moved into 12 hour shifts and instead of imposing a citywide
4:08 pm
curfew, chief patel is asking davis residents to make smart choices. >> people have to make smart choices about where it is that they go. what it is that they're doing, and whether they're able to pay attention to their surroundings. of course, people should have a buddy system right now. >> and we have also learned that uc davis has expanded their safe ride program to run for 16 hours a day so that no student has to walk home alone. now, if you see anyone matching the suspect's description, you are asked to call david davis police right away live from the uc davis campus. lena howland, abc seven news. okay. thank you, lena. >> meanwhile, we are learning more about the death of cash app founder bob lee. >> the san francisco medical examiner's office releasing his autopsy report. it shows lee died from multiple stab wounds. >> one that pierced his heart. >> the report shows doctors at san francisco general hospital worked for hours to save lee before he died in the operating room, a security guard arrested
4:09 pm
for shooting and killing 24 year old banco brown at a walgreens is now out of jail. >> the san francisco district attorney's office will not be pursuing a murder charge right now as abc7 news anchor liz kreutz reports, it's a decision that has sparked a larger conversation about security in the city. >> the decision came late monday night. >> san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins announced her office is dropping murder charges against 33 year old michael earl wayne anthony, the private security guard who fatally shot 24 year old banco brown at a walgreens last week. jenkins says after reviewing video of the incident and witness statements, she does not believe there is sufficient evidence to overcome the security guards argument that he was acting in self defense. >> we had to make a decision not to move forward with charging the shooting happened last thursday at the store near fourth and market streets. >> sfpd says they responded to a call about shoplifting. jenkins says surveillance video of the incident shows the situation escalated into a violent
4:10 pm
altercation. she says there's no indication that brown was armed. i'm not going to go into into full detail of the facts, but what i can say is that there was an escalation into violence being used as well as threats of further violence. >> i just don't think that there's justification for a murder, a murder of somebody. julia arroyo is the co-executive director of the young women's freedom center and a longtime friend and mentor of brown. >> she's calling on the city to release the surveillance video. >> first off, we want to see the tapes. we want to see the proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the da's office has to justify this murder and to let the community see for themselves as we are not considering releasing the video at this time. >> this is still an open investigation. this case is not closed. >> the shooting has hit a nerve for many in san francisco. that includes rafael gutierrez, a security guard at another walgreens. what is it like to be a security guard at a walgreens in the city? i mean, it's really crazy. >> i mean, and just for asking
4:11 pm
them to leave the store property, they want to fight you or they want to pull a knife out on you. >> what can they do? >> nothing. you know, and we can't do anything to protect ourselves. >> now they're trying to save people want you know, that's not right. and i mean, every day i got to go home to my wife and just letting it out. what i went through. it's not okay, you know. >> gutierrez says he does not carry a firearm. he has a non-lethal weapon, a taser, pepper spray and a baton. but he understands why some do have guns. arroyo says it's time for the city to change that. it's unacceptable. >> this is why do people have firearm inside of walgreens? >> i believe this is going to be a larger conversation that we have to have as a city and as a community in san francisco. >> liz creutz, abc7 news. >> now to san francisco's fentanyl crisis. >> a survey asking san francisco voters whether drug dealers who are undocumented should be denied protection under the city's sanctuary laws. >> the overwhelming majority said yes. the survey was
4:12 pm
conducted by polling firm emc and the results were given to abc7 news reporter leanne melendez, who joining us live in the newsroom with more on this. leanne. well, julian, to my knowledge and those who conduct the survey, this is the first time that voters have been asked that very specific question. >> and it's very telling after years of seeing the drug crisis and knowing that thousands of people have died on our streets, potential voters are weighing in . it's 11:00 in the morning and as expected, the streets of the tenderloin are buzzing around the highly addictive and potentially fatal drug, fentanyl . over the past three years, san francisco has seen about 2000 deaths directly linked to drug overdoses. about 1500 of those are attributed to fentanyl. in a survey of 500 potential voters in san francisco, a poll conducted by the national firm emc research asked should fentanyl felony dealing not have
4:13 pm
sanctuary city protections? 70% say they support denying sanctuary protection, then 20% opposed it and 10% did not know or refuse to answer. here's how the ceo of emc interpret its those findings and i think it probably is frustration around acknowledging that there's a problem. supervisor matt dorsey , a recovering addict, currently has a proposed ordinance that would exclude fentanyl felony dealing from being protected under sanctuary city laws. >> i think we can make a minor adjustment to our sanctuary city policies to add the deadliest crime in san francisco history to a list of crimes that many of them are less serious than fentanyl. dealer say it was say it was. >> we will not put up with but it's unlikely that his ordinance will pass. >> as a few supervisors have objected, including hillary. ronen, who claims many of the
4:14 pm
undocumented drug dealers are on the streets against their will. there are people that lure immigrants to san francisco and the promise of getting construction jobs and then when they're here, they threaten that if they don't participate in selling drugs, that they will harm family members back home. >> and they know where they live. that is a reality that's happening in san francisco. >> we went to the heart of the tenderloin to ask those who were openly dealing if that was true , were they promised a construction job and instead ended up dealing in drugs one by one. they refused to answer my questions. but a longtime resident who knows many of the drug dealers here confirmed ronan's claims. that's like 80% of people are here, from my understand, saying that a lot of people come out here with the illusion that they're going to come work construction or some sort of labor job and end up
4:15 pm
selling drugs out here. >> but tom wolf, a recovering fentanyl and heroin addict who says he assisted drug dealers inside lists that many are not victims of the narco trade. >> i know that they're having custom built homes made constructed in their country of origin. >> they've shown me pictures on their phone and i used to help them wire money back to their native country because i had an id and they didn't because they're undocumented. so how will lawmakers like supervisor dorsey use the results of this survey? >> it allows them to kind of do a check, right? am i am i thinking the same thing that my voters are thinking? >> it is good to know that if this is something that we do go to voters with next year, i think i would have very strong support from voters. so that is going to weigh on some of my decision making about what we do next year. >> so there are 46 felony crimes in san francisco, 46 that are not protected under the sanctuary city ordinance. this
4:16 pm
clearly is not one of them, even though as supervisor dorsey points out, there are so many people who are being killed by this drug in the newsroom, leanne melendez, abc seven news. >> leanne, thank you. oakland teachers could strike as early as thursday. the sticking point and what the school district is saying, the loneliness epidemic . it's not just about your social life and the growing need for help. the program giving children a little happiness now in need itself. >> hi, i'm larry beil. we're live at chase center, getting ready for game one of warriors versus lakers, the second round series. >> you know, we can talk about the greatness of steph curry. all night long. pretty much. but there's one story in particular that tells you how important he is to this franchise. and frankly, why we are here tonight . and that's coming up. lo e also known as low energy, is wreaking havoc on millions. >> i can't even pull out the

4:20 pm
propelled the warriors into the second round series. so, you know what happened? game six, the warriors came out flat. they lost at home, setting up a pivotal game seven. draymond and steph were both so upset at the game six outcome that neither one of them could sleep. they were texting each other at 4:00 in the morning next day. steph shows up at practice. draymond was going to talk and steph said, no, i got this one. and he basically told the team, look, we've been through a lot this season, a lot of you have personal issues. you're not happy with playing time, you're not happy with this, you're not happy with that. got to put all that aside. and so if you don't think we can win and if you can't put your personal issues aside, do not get on the bus and come with me to sacramento. if i see you on the bus, i take that as your personal pledge that you are committed to winning this series and you are all in. if you're not all in, you're all out. i don't want to see you on the bus. the rest is history. steph goes for 50 and the warriors win game seven and here we are with them. ready to face
4:21 pm
the lakers now. steve kerr on the greatness of steph curry. >> when i have dinner with gregg popovich. welcome to center of the golden state warriors. >> oh, looks like we lost the steve kerr interview there. but basically what he said was that if steph was not on this team, steve kerr would have been fired a long time ago or maybe not even taking the job to begin with. but essentially it was a testament to what steph does, both on and off the court for this team. so lots more coming up as we count down to game one of steph versus lebron. steph, coming off the 50 point game, i'm going to make a bold prediction, christine and julien, if steph goes for 50 again, i like the warriors chances tonight. oh that's a bowler. >> what something on the line. you know what i think it's safe to say many people wouldn't have jobs if it weren't for steph. no kidding. and an incredible performances like that.
4:22 pm
>> 50 might be one of them. >> thanks, larry. all right. we appreciate it, larry. the first two games of the series are at the chase center. tip off tonight is 7 p.m. game two starts thursday at 6 p.m. then the series shifts to los angeles for game three. and you can watch that right here on abc7 coverage starts saturday 5 p.m. tip off is at 530. okay >> we know a lot of folks are likely gathering outside of chase center and thrive city to watch the game tonight and right now they're likely getting soaked. yes >> my advice is get indoors as quickly as you can because we've got all of a sudden some fairly widespread showers here in the bay area. here's a look at live doppler seven. and you can see that well, i don't know if you were watching earlier where we had just a little bit of green showing up in the bay area. but right now, the central part of the bay area is getting lots of shower activity. and some of this activity contains heavy downpours down in san francisco on to the peninsula around san mateo, up in marin county and eastern over into the lafayette concord area. and down around
4:23 pm
fremont and sunol. so it's pretty wet out there and skies are getting darker as you look out over the bay from the east bay hills camera, current temperature readings, 52 here in san francisco, oakland, 56, low 60s at palo alto, san jose and mountain view, 54 at half moon bay at the golden gate. clouds are rather thick and the pavement looks wet, so there has likely been some rainfall there in the last few minutes. 60 degrees right now at santa rosa, 57 napa, 53 napa rather. novato 57. fairfield 59 mid-fifties at concord and livermore. one more live view from emeryville looking at dark clouds over the bay and a little bit of a break of sunlight out near the golden gate. these are the forecast headlines. showers and brief downpours continue overnight into tomorrow. scattered showers likely again tomorrow. less of a chance tomorrow of thunderstorms and then drier, but cooler than average for the rest of the week. this storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale is a level one storm through tonight and tomorrow. showers, brief downpours will be with us. a chance of thunderstorms but that chance diminishes tomorrow and a chance of hail as well. here's a
4:24 pm
forecast animation taking us through the evening commute. you can see what showers become more widely scattered late tonight. but then after midnight, they become more active and a bit heavier going into the morning commute. so it'll probably be a wet and slippery morning commute. and then the storm will push farther south late tomorrow as the storm winds down. overnight lows mainly mid to upper 40s highs tomorrow. upper 50s at the coast, low to mid 60s just about everywhere else. so temperatures remain below average for a while. here's the accuweather 70 forecast. we started drying out a little bit on thursday, although it will be chilly still for may. then we get a mix of sun and clouds going into the weekend and finally it starts to warm up a little bit on sunday and by monday, tuesday of next week, bright sunshine and temperatures warming up to the typical range for this time of the year. all right. >> thank you, spencer. okay. appreciate it. >> well, trying to iron out some differences ahead of this week's possible teacher walkout in oakland. >> how today's writers strike could impact your favorite shows. we'll be right back. summer begin with guardians of the galaxy, volume three in

with friends, family. we less time parties in groups. we're are less and less connected in a variety of ways, even if we just look at perceptions of loneliness. some estimates suggest that 1 in 2 americans may be lonely and that estimate, of course, can vary depending on if we look at this other ways. wow >> 1 in 2 americans could be facing this epidemic of loneliness. can you break down what that means for our physical health? because i think those call outs might really be a wake up call for some folks. >> yeah, this has been linked to a number of health outcomes and of course, most people recognize how this influences our emotional well-being and even our mental health. but there are significant impacts on our physical health, including chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes as well as cognitive health and
4:35 pm
dementia for alzheimer's disease . and we have good evidence that this increases our risk for premature mortality from all causes. so this this has a profound effects on on both individual health as well as public health. >> these findings so, so, so startling and truly a wake up call, i think, for a lot of folks that might be watching right now. again, not just the cognitive effects or cognitive decline, but also the physical issues that we might be facing as well. now, when we talk about who is facing loneliness, wanting to americans, is it mostly the elderly that we're talking about here, or is it truly affect folks across all age ranges? >> you know, that's somewhat of a misconception that this is just an older adult issue. it's really a human issue, human are social beings. we all have social needs. and so loneliness can truly affect anyone at any
4:36 pm
age, any demographic. and in fact, some estimates suggest that some of the highest prevalence rates are among those who are young, such as adolescents and young adults. but truly, anyone can potentially be at risk for this. when we talk about especially young adults who are affected by loneliness, i think back to the early days of the pandemic when the only social interaction that they were getting was on their digital devices. >> do we think that this issue of loneliness has just been worsened by the impacts of the pandemic? >> yeah. so we certainly saw trends that were beginning, you know, back in 2003. so for the last two decades. but but of course, the pandemic exacerbated this issue. and so one of the things that i think is really important to recognize is that because this began before the pandemic, just getting back to normal is not going to be enough. and that we really need
4:37 pm
to do more in order to address this important issue to such great advice. >> dr. holt-lunstad, we really appreciate your time and thanks so much for joining us. thank you. well, if you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, there are resources available. you can find our list at abc7 news.com slash take action full of resources there. we'll take a short break. we'll be right back . top new brands, huge selection, big discount that's rec van a new winnebago revel adventure van is discounted to just 159 998 shop in comfort indoors for your new rv at rec van in fremont with more crews all over the bay area than any other garage door company. >> precision garage door can fix your door fast with quality parts and warranty precision garage door will get you fast and get the job done right. precision door service a name you can trust it when big tobacco's products were found
