ylhird a nes trying to sleep good well of the suspect followed the neighbor home and marched inside and police say fired in five people were killed including a nine-year-old boy. now to a story only on abc seven tonight about san francisco's fentanyl crisis. a survey asked voters whether a document a drug dealer should be denied protection under the city century laws on the overwhelming majority said yes. it was conducted by a polling firm bmc and the results were given to abc 7 and our reporter is in the newsroom with interesting results. >> you know, to my knowledge and those who conducted the survey, this is the first time that voters have been asked that very specific question. it is very telling. after years of seeing the drug crisis and knowing thousands of people have died on the streets, potential voters are weighing in. it is 11:00 a.m. in the morning

and is expected, the streets of the tenderloin are buzzing around the highly addictive and potentially fatal drug fentanyl. over the past three years, san francisco had seen 2000 deaths directly letting to drug overdoses. about 1500 of those are attributed to fentanyl. in a survey of 500 potential voters in san francisco, a poll conducted by the national firm bmc research asked should fentanyl felony d-link not have sanctuary protections? 70% say they supported the ninth century protection. 20% opposed it. 10% did not know or refuse to answer. here is how the ceo of emc interprets those findings. >> i think it is frustration around acknowledging that there is a problem. >> matt dorsey, recovering addict, currently has a proposed ordinance that would exclude

tenderloin to ask those who were openly dealing if that was true. where they promised a construction job and instead ended up dealing drugs? one by one they refused to answer my ques, but a longtime resident who knows many of the drug dealers here confirmed the claims. >> it's like 80% of the people out here. from my understanding, a lot of people come out here with the illusion they will come work construction or some sort of labor job. >> but tom wolf, recovering heroin and fentanyl addict who says he assisted drug dealers insists many are not victims of that trade. >> i know they are having custom-built homes constructed in the country of origin and have shown me pictures on their phone. i used to help them wire money to their native country because i had an idea and they didn't because they are undocumented.

dan: a bombshell announcement today as we learn nordstrom plans to close its two locations in san francisco, the only nordstrom stores left in the city. one is the anchor department store in westfield center and the other is the neighboring nordstrom rack location. why are they closing? as our anchor explains, there is

more to the story than you might think. >> tuesday, nordstrom announced the closure of downtown san francisco and nordstrom rack locations. stores will be closed by the end of august. >> it is unfortunate for the whole community. >> the store opened at the san francisco center in 1988. the rack opened on market street in 2014. the shuttering comes amid other announced retail closures in the area, including office dipped -- office depot, container store, anthropology, and the whole foods flagship along market and 2022 opening announced a temporary closure must month citing worker safety. westfield mall where nordstrom it is located sent the statement placing blame squarely on crime, saying in part the closure underscores the deteriorating situation in downtown san francisco and blamed retailers and businesses for leaving the area due to unsafe conditions. however, there is more to the story than just crime.

of effective nordstrom pulling out along with the 17 other stories is devastating for san francisco because the core of san francisco is emptying out, and the real question is can anybody come into replace it. i was talking about ross dress for less taking over the nordstrom rack location and like i said ikea is coming in, but in terms of marketing and getting the money out there in a nordstrom is losing that. it's a big one. there is a big question about the mall of the future about, and that is an entire city block comes so that his empty storefronts for whatever reason once they start and proliferate, it is trouble. dan: no question. nordstrom and anchor store in that center, so a big deal to other retailers. what can san francisco do to bring san francisco business back in? >> the mayor had two police officers who were assigned to the mall in order to keep things moving smoothly and keeping safe. nordstrom's wasn't paying for

them, the city was pure they have had ambassadors down there. the mayor would like to see a freeze for taxes on businesses to keep them there and keep going. i don't know if san francisco supervisors or boarders have an appetite for that. san francisco has long lived off its core downtown whether office workers or tourists, and the fact is they are not there anymore for a number of reasons comes of reasons, so that cash will go with them as well out of town and like i said, whatever the reasons, you can clean up the streets and do all that and tried to make it business-friendlier, but the next couple of years we better watch it, because otherwise san francisco could go the way of say detroit or cleveland in the 1970's and 1980's. ama: all right. thank you for your insight. dan: let's move on now. we will go from that to a bleak skies around the bay area. ama: just look behind us. it is back to winter. sandhya: yes. we are starting to see the skies

ama: a deadly dust storm pileup in illinois has claimed a seventh victim confirmed dead. as many as 80 cars, trucks, a tractor-trailers were involved in the pileup in illinois yesterday. officials say the storm was caused by heavy wind blowing up dirt from nearby farm fields. the highway reopened to traffic in both directions today. dan: an unruly airline passenger has banned from united flights and faces charges after punching an airline employee on a flight from san francisco. cody lovins of texas faces battery charges on the flight from sfo to houston. it was boarding when the punches started flying. one person shut this video and said the man was sitting in her seat and she says he got angry when flight attendants ask him to move to his assigned seats. she says he was slurring and trying to jump out of the plane. united called the passengers behavior unacceptable and he has

been called to help investigators and they have not released information about possible suspects. ama: an east bay man charged with running a $30 billion ponzi scheme. he is accused of running the scheme for seven years from 2013 to 2020. federal investigators say there are more than 100 victims and they say he fraudulently bought and resold warriors tickets on luxury suites at oracle arena and chase center. the indictment alleges he diverted $7 million of investor funds for his personal benefit. dan: the investigation continues into the antioch police departments that alleged misconduct and texting scandal. two congressmen are asking the department of justice to investigate. a police chief is working to not just rebuild the police force meantime, but to build trust in the community. today he set them with our abc7news reporter to detail some of the challenges he is up against. >> i guess the question is do you think the antioch police

department has a problem with racism? >> i am going to say it is clear now we know that certain officers participated in certain behavior. i have to believe in my heart of hearts that that does not reflect the entire organization. >> one year into the job of the antioch police chief is in a tough spot dealing with the fallout of an fbi investigation into his apartment in a racist texting scandal about both of began before he joined the force. >> it is hurtful. without question. that is hate speech. let's be clear. there's no need to sugarcoat it. >> the custer count= district attorney's office revealed text messages sent by antioch police officers over a period of almost two years and the chief says this goes beyond the culture of the department. >> i am doing a deep dive right now into the psychology of the organization. there are two things that are apparent. a lack of accountability and i
