today. teachers will be on strike tomorrow. the school district is saying we believe that a deal with our teachers union is within reach. so, they just have seven hours and counting. the playground at hillcrest elementary in oakland may be empty tomorrow if teachers go through with a strike. >> i'm hoping that we don't have to go in strike, i hope we can come to terms with the district and i hope you get a clear idea of what the district is offering us. >> while negotiations are ongoing, here's what oakland unified put out yesterday. veteran teachers will get a substantial raise going for more than $94,000 a year to more than 109,000. retroactive pay of more than 6000. while those in the middle will go from a salary of more than 78,000 to more than 89,000 in retro pay of more than 5000. is the first year teachers, the newbies who are at the bottom of the system, going for more than

21-year-old marie bedford in the head, killing her. she they could face 27 years to life in prison. >> police are investigating a shooting by officers with the city housing authority. a happen at a house on 80 5th avenue. two housing authority officers responded to an emergency call, return gunfire hitting one person. the men who were shot was taken to the local hospital. two officers are on leave. officers with the housing authority police property owned by the authority along with the oakland police department. >> okun is losing the fire chief after two years on the job. the chief is resigning june 20 second and taking a job in the private sector. this comes as oakland faces a $350 million budget deficit. they propose cutting one fire engine and delaying the rollout of another to save $20 million. he said it was a painful decision to leave.

into the department. in march the revelations of a racist texting scandal that could involve 40% of the department. many of the text change targeting black people, which chief ford calls hate speech. do you think you command the respect of this department, given your racial and ethnic background in the way they talked about black people? >> i have no choice but to think that. if i get mired down in what people think and feel, that will paralyze me and inhibit me from doing what i need to do. >> chief ford said he has to restructure the department and rebuild public trust. the partnership with the u.s. department of justice on a reform package that includes 15 strategies in 19 compliance measures. he's working with the naacp to organize forums to reach the public. quick somebody has to respond to

opportunity in her overall quality of life. >> the vice president of animal care, conservation and research at the oakland zoo sesser team worked with the american sue association on a new plan for donna to be around other female elephants. on wednesday the announced donna will be moved to an elephant sanctuary in tennessee. >> there are three female elephants in their location at the facility, there would be room for donna and they are about donna's age and have the same sort of social experience. >> donna's departure leaves oakland's other elephant as the only elephant in the entire bay area. the san francisco zoo announced the closure of their elephant exhibit in december of 2004 but she says they may not be alone for long. >> we are working on the idea of bringing other young males to oakland and may be having a pull group. that's one thing we consider. >> they estimate the departure to happen in mid june.
