connected to churchill downs, the racetrack is now saying, plus a new role for michelle obama launching a new company and a mystery in the woods of new jersey, who dumped hundreds of pounds of pasta near a stream. and why. from abc new in new york. this is america this morning.'m andrew denber. good morning to you. i'm marie in an alley. we want to begin with the latest mass shooting in america, this one at a doctor's office suspect accused of shooting five women is now in custody after an hours long manhunt around atlanta, and we are now learning more about a possible motive for the attack. the manhunt for a suspected atlanta gunmen came to a dramatic end eight hours after he allegedly opened fire inside a doctor's office. he will be charged and stand trial for his crimes. a major police presence descended on midtown atlanta yesterday as people evacuated the area, including dr timothy

simon, who was in surgery, one floor above where the shots were fired. some policemen outside saying, you know, come out with your hands up and hold your hands up to make sure that i was not a shooter, and then they brought me out and then they escorted us all down the stairs, police say 24 year old dion paterson shot five women inside the waiting room of a medical practice, killing a 39 year old. four others were hospitalized, some in critical condition. the active shooter person shot the search efforts expanded after paterson allegedly a driver. police later arrested him inside a gated condo complex in cobb county about 18 miles away. a neighbor tells our atlanta station wsb. she had a hunch and suggested to police. they searched the pool house that are complex where they later found paterson. police declined to discuss a possible motive. but patterson's mother said her son

was upset over a medication mix up, saying he wanted the drug at a van to deal with anxiety and depression. but she says the v a would not give it to him. patterson had served time in the coast guard until his discharge in january. the 39 year old victim has been identified as amy st pierre and employee of the cdc. three other victims were in intensive care last night, turning to the economy, the stability of another regional bank has come into question shares and pac west bank lost more than half their value late yesterday after bloomberg reported the bank was exploring a possible sale. pacwest faces many of the same concerns that recently brought down three other regional banks . the company has reported about $44 billion in assets. one of the concerns rising interest rates, the federal reserve increased rates by another quarter point yesterday, hoping to further bring down inflation . fed chair j. powell says future rate hikes maybe paused if prices continue to come down. overseas more questions than answers this morning after an apparent drone strike on the

kremlin in moscow. the russians claim it was ukraine targeting vladimir putin, but military analysts are not convinced abc is justin finch is here now with mark justin. good morning. brianna and good morning. the kremlin claims it was an assassination attempt on vladimir putin and overnight new airstrikes in ukraine as well. early this morning. air raid sirens blared throughout ukraine's capital key for more than three hours, authorities saying russia launched a complex airstrike with drones and missiles, but no casualties were reported overnight. it comes after russia claimed it stopped the drone strike on the kremlin in the heart of moscow. what it claims was an unsuccessful assassination attempt on president putin, who was not in the kremlin at the time. this is the first time that the war has been brought home to moscow. video posted by russian state media shows the first drone yesterday morning smashing into the senate palace tome 16. minutes later, a second drone

nichols was quote high as a kite . but the autopsy autopsy showed only a trace amount of marijuana in his system. five officers involved in that arrest are now charged with murder. next the chokehold death on a new york subway train and a warning this video can be hard to watch, witnesses say jordan neely, who was believed to be homeless was threatening other subway passengers when a marine veteran placed him in a chokehold. neely later died at the hospital, where his death was ruled a homicide by compression to his neck. the man who pinned nearly down was questioned and then released. protesters gathered yesterday demanding an arrest. because what people are constantly given is this narrative that whole people are dangerous. people think that they can take matters into their own hands. transit police officers and i responded to many jobs where you had a passenger assistance someone and so we cannot just blakely said. blanketly say what a passenger shooters should not do this situation like that. we should allow the investigation to take

longest wait time of any large metro area in the us the wait list for public housing is over 18 years. there's today what we're seeing is a housing crisis , unlike one that we've seen since the mid 20th century, the lack of public and affordable housing is a widespread issue. our analysis shows public housing wait times exceed 17 years in suffolk county, new york, nine years in meeker county, minnesota and six years in hinds county, mississippi, we haven't built any large scale public housing since richard nixon put a moratorium on that construction in the seventies. there isn't a state in the country. where someone working at minimum wage with 40 hours a week can afford a typical and a two bedroom apartment, the department of housing and urban development, says president biden's american rescue plan has helped more than 50,000 people experiencing homelessness but acknowledges more work must be done. administration is asking congress for more resources to address the issue. the younger
