repair of a sinkhole. this started last night and we don't have an estimate on when the roadway will reopen. this will certainly impact commuters coming out of woodside it is damp on the bridge but otherwise no blocking issues. >> happening now, thousands of oakland unified teachers are preparing to hit the picket line, on strike after failing to reach a new contract with the district. i mean adele castille is in oakland -- amanda delk is still you -- the district very acknowledging that it will not be a typical day. parents only got the official word about the strike at 9:00 last night and fortunately already this has been debated.

others seem to about exactly what is going on, but it is not going to be a typical day here at any of these schools as thousands, more than 3000, teachers are expected to hit the picket lines this morning. in their place, central office staff have been assigned to work at schools. the strike comes after seven days of bargaining with the school district with no deal reached. the teachers union and oakland -- the teachers union says they have failed to come to the table in good faith. one parent was vocal against strikes, saying kids are already behind, but during after pickup yesterday, a majority of parents say they stand with educators arab support -- educators and support a short strike.

we have the district is planning to host a press conference at 10:30 this morning. so far, those picket signs are already stacked at union headquarters. in oakland, amanda del castillo. >> thank you. new developments in a series of stabbings in davis. police have detained a person of interest. the attacks happened since last thursday near the uc davis campus. two men died. one woman survived and is in critical condition. while police have not officially connected the stabbings, investigators say it is more probable than not that they are connected. uc davis has increased security on campus and classes starting after 6 p.m. are being held virtually. >> san francisco police chief is sharing you details about the moments that lead to a deadly shooting by a walgreens security guard. speaking before the police commission, chief scott said the 24-year-old was suspected of

shoplifting, spat on the guard and raised an arm toward the guard, when the guard fired. brown was not shot in the back and was unarmed. san francisco's district attorney said she would not seek a murder charge against the guard, citing insufficient evidence and the belief acted in self-defense. chief scott told the commission this is still an open investigation. >> our people have been asked their chain of command to continue to investigate some of the things you are asking about because we believe that they are important to this case. >> san fra aaron peskin is urging her to reconsider. scott weiner says brown's death was preventable. >> the man accused in a mass shooting inside a medical center in atlanta is in custody.

one person was killed, four injured after they were shot in the waiting room. jobina is at the live desk with the latest. >> all the injured victims are women ranging in age from 25 to 71 years old. the mayor of atlanta says they are fighting for their lives, three of them listed in critical condition. a 39-year-old cdc employee was killed. the cdc releasing a statement saying it is saddened by her loss. the suspect was taken into custody after an hours long manhunt. the 24-year-old entered the medical facility shortly before noon yesterday and began shooting. >> we know that he had an appointment at the facility and again why he did what he did is still under investigation. >> police tracked the suspect to a gas station in atlanta. they say they spotted him stealing a pickup truck. he was eventually taken into custody outside the city in cobb

county, where he surrendered to police. the suspect's mother son was a former coast guardsmen suffering from mental instability from a new medication. the v.a. denied the medication he wanted for his anxiety and depression according to the mother. >> an oakland man charges after prosecutors say he killed a woman with an assault rifle. they say he was angry about noisy cars racing by his house so he fired random shots, hitting a 21-year-old. similar incidents made national headlines recently. mental health experts say the gun violence comes from many factors. >> they probably do not have support of family, friends, community to be able to express when they get angry, to be able to be able to process when they get upset, so what happens is it

districts in the area. reporter gloria rodríguez continuing our coverage in the newsroom. >> good morning. oakland teachers are among the lowest paid in alameda county. the union is asking for a 23% pay raise for teachers across the board. the district has offered a 22% increase for the most tenured teachers and staff, calling it structured salary increases, but these negotiations could not even matter. a state lawmaker introduced a bill to take the power of teachers salaries from districts and give it to the state. it would give teachers and staff a 50% pay raise by 2030. >> if we want world-class schools, we need to pay teachers and essential staff what they deserve. >> right now ranges from $52,000 a year to more than $94,000 a year for veteran teachers.

across the state are clearing brush to prepare for fire season. even with all the rain we saw this winter and spring, it could be a possibly dangerous season. officials say it is only a matter of time before all the vegetation dries out, which could then provide fuel for damaging wildfires. utility companies are getting ready. in southern california, they are installing fire resistant power poles and forecasting technology to determine the severity of wind events. fire experts say the state is average or slightly above average for fire danger the summer. >> taking a look at the morning run, unlike yesterday, today, it is mostly cloudy, starting out in the 40's for the most part, one of those days again where we are slow to warm, temperatures remain below average. violence time, most of us are in the mid and upper 50's -- by lunchtime, most of us are in the mid and upper 50's.
