>> steve osunsh the lastfous. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, robin. police say it was a surveillance camera on the street that led them to make this arrest north of the city. >> active shooter, person shot. >> reporter: the former u.s. service member who police believe was the active shooter at a doctor's office in midtown atlanta is in custody this morning after authorities say he killed one woman and wounded four others. 39-year-old amy st. pierre who died worked for the cdc. >> this took multiple jurisdictions working together. >> female shot. she's bleeding. shot in the side and the back. >> reporter: records show the 24-year-old dion patterson left the coast guard in january. police aren't saying what led to the gun fire in the doctor's office. police had surveillance pictures from an elevator to share quickly, including one where he's seen pointing a gun. they say he stole this pickup truck from a gas station and got

away. the shooting shut down parts of the city and put people here on edge until police arrested the accused gun man at an apartment complex in the north suburbs. >> so many cars went flying down there. they caught him. >> i saw the arrest. they had him down and 15 other cops came down there. once they got him in the area, they told me i had to leave. he's caught and everybody can relax now. >> reporter: at the medical center dr. timothy simons was in the middle of a surgery on the floor above when the gun fire started. >> i heard some police outside saying come out with your hands up. at that point they made sure i was not a shooter and brought me out and then they escorted us downstairs. >> reporter: this was the 190th mass shooting in america this year. in washington, this georgia senator pointed out it's only may. >> i have two small children and their schools are on lockdown responding to this tragedy.

as a pastor, i'm praying for those who are affected by this tragedy, but i have to say thoughts and prayers are not enough. >> reporter: police say he was arrested without incident. his mother tells us that he was here trying to get medication for anxiety. in full disclosure, we talk about these shootings touching the lives of americans in every corner. this was my doctor's office. i have spent plenty of time in that waiting room. george? >> these stories are multiplying across the country. steve osunsami, thank you very much. overnight attacks in ukraine. russian retaliation for what it calls an attack on the kremlin targeting vladamir putin. there are questions about who was behind the attack. marcus moore is on the scene. we're learning putin is blaming the u.s.? >> reporter: that's right, george. the press secretary came out overnight and said that any ukrainian attacks on russia are,

quote, dictated by washington. john kirby responding that is a lie. images of the alleged drone attack on the kremlin. overnight air defense systems in kyiv taking out incoming drones believed to be part of russian retaliation for what it calls an attack on the kremlin wednesday. state media releasing these stunning videos of bombs exploding above the kremlin and accusing ukraine of attempting to assassinate president putin, who was not there. the first drone passing into the palace dome setting it on fire. 15 minutes later a second drone exploding as it approached the russian flag. smoke billowing above the kremlin. in a statement russia calling it a planned terrorist attack and saying it intercepted both drones. the kremlin providing no evidence to back up its claims. also issues a stark warning saying russia has the right to retaliate quote, where and when it sees necessary. president zelenskyy strongly

denying any ukrainian involvement. >> we don't attack putin or moscow. we fight on our territory. we're defending our cities. >> reporter: questions remain if the strike was ordered by ukraine or if it was a putin plot to make it look like a ukrainian attack. >> there are reasons putin could conceivably want to conduct a false flight operation here. he wants to fire up the russian people. he wants them to know the ukrainians are bringing the war to moscow. >> reporter: in ukraine, new strikes killing at least 21 civilians. images showing destruction at a supermarket and a train station. nearly 50 people hurt. back to that russian claim that the u.s. has been behind attacks in russia. again, the u.s. denying them saying that it's ludicrous and they're still investigating what happened with those alleged drone attacks at the kremlin.

lindsay? >> marcus, thank you very much. to the latest interest rate hike. fallout to the stock market and your money. rebecca jarvis is tracking the latest including another big bank in trouble. good morning, rebecca. >> that's right. good morning to you. shares of pac west, that bank plunging overnight, down 40%. the california based bank confirming it is exploring all strategic options which is wall street speak for iceberg straight ahead. the last bank to announce this was exploring strategic options was first republic. they collapsed earlier this week. a possible banking crisis is among the fed's many considerations, but the central bank still sees inflation as its biggest concern. that inflation costing the average family about $300 every month on the same goods and services as last year. the fed is hiking rates again by a quarter point. that is the tenth consecutive increase over the last year. interest rates are above 5% for the first time in 15 years. the most immediate impact you'll probably see is your credit card apy going up.

witnesses say jordan neely, who is believed to be homeless, was shouting and threatening passengers when a 24-year-old marine veteran jumps in, placing neely in a choke hold. disturbing video shows the veteran lying beneath neely holding him in a headlock position as the 30-year-old struggles and eventually loses consciousness. neely was pronounced dead at the hospital. a medical examiner ruling it a homicide by compression to his neck. >> people think they can just take matters into their own hands. >> reporter: some protesters gathering wednesday calling for an arrest. the man who pinned neely down was questioned then released telling investigators he was trying to help fellow passengers who felt scared and threatened. neely is recognizable to some in new york city as a michael jackson impersonator who frequently danced in times square. records show he had been arrested more than 40 times on the subway. mayor adams urging patience as the da investigates.

>> i was a former transit police officer. i responded to many jobs where you had a passenger assisting someone. so we cannot just blatantly say what a passenger should or should not do in a situation like that. we should allow the investigation to take its course. >> reporter: now, authorities say in addition to his dozens of prior arrest, neely also had a documented history of mental health related issues. coalition for the homeless calls this a complete travesty and says this is another failure of providing critical mental health services to the homeless population. george? >> okay, whit. thank you very much. we'll get the latest on donald trump's assault and defamation trial. attorneys for the former president say they will not put on a defense in the civil case. aaron katersky is there at the courthouse. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: former president trump is a continent away from his trial golfing in ireland. but the jury is going to hear from him this morning because e. jean carroll's attorneys are going to play clips from a deposition.

on that video, trump acknowledges he denied carroll's rape claim by saying, she's not my type. i take it sir that you stand by that statement today? yes, i do, trump says. this morning the jury will also see a clip where trump is shown a photo of carroll from the '80s and say that's marla, appearing to confuse his accuser for his second wife. carroll's attorneys say disparaging victims looks is a trump denial. another woman told the jury trump assaulted her when she was writing a story about trump and melania's wedding anniversary. he has his hands on my shoulders, she testified, and he pushes me against the wall and starts kissing me, holding me against the wall. trump denied it saying, look at her, i don't think so. witness testimony is expected to wrap up by the end of the day. the defense is calling no witnesses so the judge told the jury to be prepared to deliberate the case early next week. george? >> okay. thank you very much.

to a major shake-up in the weight loss industry. jenny craig, a househood name, is going out of business. erielle reshef has the latest. this really is the end of an era. >> it truly is. earlier this week the company warned employees that major cuts were looming. jenny craig is officially shutting down after 40 years. management informed staff that the company could not secure financing needed to stay open. this bringses the end to jenny craig's four decades of prepared meals and in-person diet coaching. the news comes as the weight loss industry faces a seismic shift away from brick and mortar location into the e-commerce space and as the awful label use of diabetes medication for weight loss soars in popularity. jenny craig's last day of operations will be tomorrow. george? >> okay. thank you. now to the coronation. saturday night's celebration could be the biggest job in british history. lara has the latest.

their van is sinking. thankfully, the people watching knew this was serious and they stepped in seconds before it almost became deadly. >> pretty sure that wasn't supposed to happen. >> reporter: a wild scene that witnesses say may have been a case of gps gone wrong. a woman and her passenger driving right down a boat ramp straight into the water, even smiling in confusion as their van sinks lower, still rolling forward. >> i think they must have been in some sort of shock. i don't think they registered they were in the harbor. >> reporter: christy hutchison filmed what happened while her husband shawn dove in to help. >> i jumped in the water and got to the window and spoke to the driver. they were drifting off. the weather was really bad. >> reporter: the passenger quickly making it out of the window, but the driver still inside.

other witnesses including a trained rescue diver jumping into action. the driver telling them she has a heart condition, climbing up on to the window. >> we knew we had to get people out. that was the priority. >> after carefully helping them out of the vehicle, walking them back up the boat ramp, the van going under. law enforcement not commenting on what caused the incident. the area around the harbor is ffict toavige. >> i may have gotten distracted. they said they had been following their gps. >> i don't know the reason of them going into the water. all we could do is save them. >> police say thankfully nobody was injured. one of the people we heard from, shawn, said this is not the first time he's seen a car go into the water via a boat ramp. it is the first time he's seen one do it going forward. >> trevor, thank you. now to rising interest rates and how you can make them work for you.

you got our attention, rebecca. >> that is what it's all about, robin. we want to know what to do with our money in times like this. we know the cost of rising rates, borrowing gets more expensive. things like your credit cards, auto loans, mortgages. they go up. but there are also great ways to take advantage of this environment with your savings. we want you to look at some of those today. certificates of deposits or cd's. these offer a fixed return for keeping your money tied up for a specific amount of time. right now the average is about 1.5%. you can do so much better than that. i have seen some offering 4%, even 5%. if you want to shop around with sites like nerd wallet and bank rate. the benefit here is that the apy is guaranteed regardless of what's happening with interest rates. but the con is that you can't withdraw the money until the term is up. so think about that when you're making this decision. a second option is i bonds. buy these directly from the treasury. they are 4.3% interest.

the down side, you have to wait at least a year to cash those bonds out. if you do cash them out within five years you might lose some of the benefit. here's what you want to look at if you really need to have access to that money. this is the third option. it is a high yield savings account. that can earn you significantly more interest than a traditional savings account over time. right now the national average for traditional savings account, probably what you're getting paid if you've done nothing recently, .39%. that's nothing. most high yield savings accounts can earn you upwards of 4% apy. you want to make sure you are looking at only fdic insured banks. even if the bank goes under, your bank is guaranteed up to $250,000. bottom line here, if you have extra money to save, this is the best time to grow those funds because rates are rising. that is where you benefit. >> how about this apple? apple's new high yield savings account? it's getting a lot of buzz. >> so much buzz. the program started just a few

our senior national correspondent steve osunsami is on the scene in atlanta with the latest. good morning again, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. records show this accused gun man left the coast guard in january. at this point police aren't saying what led to the shooting but his mother tells abc news that he was here at the doctor's office trying to get a prescription for a medication to treat anxiety. police say that after the shooting he came out into the street, ran to a nearby gas station, stole a white truck that he used to make his get away. >> now advising an active shooter, person shot. >> reporter: the former u.s. service member who police believe was the active shooter at a doctor's office in midtown atlanta is in custody after authorities say he killed one woman and wounded four others. 39-year-old amy st. pierre who died, worked for the cdc. >> female shot. seriously bleeding, shot in the side and the back. >> reporter: police had surveillance pictures to share quickly including one where he's seen pointing a gun.

the shooting shut down parts of the city and put people here on edge until police arrested the accused gun man at an apartment complex in the north suburbs. >> 30 cars went flying down there. they caught him. >> i saw the arrest. they had him down and like 15 other cops came down there, too. >> reporter: at the medical center dr. timothy simons was in surgery on a floor above when the gun fire started. >> i heard police saying come out with your hands up. at that point they made sure that i have not a shooter. >> reporter: this was the 190th mass shooting in america this year. in washington, this georgia senator pointed out it's only may. >> as a pastor, i'm praying for though affected by this tragedy, but i have to say thoughts and prayers are not enough. >> reporter: this happens to be my doctor's office. about 3 a.m. they sent a note to

all patients telling us all appointments today would be cancelled. george? >> okay, steve. thank you very much. we're going to turn to the elizabeth schulze has the latest. >> reporter: this is the latest in a series of stunning allegations that justice clarence thomas received gifts from a prominent republican donor without properly disclosing them. a report out this morning the gop billionaire donor harlan crow paid for private school tuition for clarence thomas grand nephew who thomas was raising as a son since the late 1990s. total amount paid isn't known but payments were made to two separate schools and could have exceeded $150,000. report says thomas did not disclose those tuition payments on his annual disclosure. in a statement to pro publica, crow's office said harlan crow has been passionate about the importance of quality education, giving back to the less fortunate. especially at risk youth.

closer look at the crown jewels. complicated history and the guards who have protected them for hundreds of years. deborah roberts has more.t towe. good morning, deborah. >> reporter: good morning, george. yes, those crown jewels are usually held back here under lock and key where tourists often flock to see them. some are about to be taken out for the coronation. we don't know how or when because, as you can imagine, security around these ancient priceless objects is pretty tight. but we are told some are probably being transferred as we speak because traditionally they are held the night before at westminster abbey. the crown jewels, england's sparkling splendid symbols of monarchy usually under lock and key at the tower of london, objects of fascination for many and a source of pride for those who guard them. the beef eaters, or as they are officially known, yoman orders. >> we've looked after the crown jewels for hundreds of years. it's a massive part of the job.

guests westminster abbey to watch king charles be crowned, e there, ready for their biggest ceremonial display in seven decades. the british military will be by their on arch's side as charles makes his way to and from westminster abbey on coronation day. putting on a show the way only the british can do for their new king and commander in chief, even doing a flyover and tribute, something we saw during queen elizabeth's platinum jubilee last year. >> it's a show not only for the king's armed forces, which he is the head of, but showing the commonwealth on the world stage, what makes britain so special. >> reporter: more than 6,000 men and women from britain's armed forces will take part in the procession. rehearsals have been going on for weeks to ensure perfection. the royal family with strong ties to the military. the king and his sons, william and harry, all military men.
