then bringing you a live picture from the bay bridge toll plaza because metering lights are officially on. reggie: today, it will not be classes as usual for thousands of oakland unified students as their teachers hit the picket line for a second day. schools will be open, but they are operating on a modified schedule as teachers continue to fight for more pay and better benefits. amanda is outside skyline high school this morning. amanda: day two, demonstration expected today. the small group behind me at skyline getting here just before 4:45 this morning. yesterday, we saw more than 3000 ousd teachers across 80 school sites, on strike, picketing. that was expected again today. at this point, no indication of any agreement or end in sight. ousd schools will continue to operate on a modified schedule

with the ongoing strike. the last day of classes is scheduled for may 25. yesterday morning, picketing was followed by a massive rally. we have not yet heard if the sides have made any progress. there is no indication they have returned to the bargaining table. aftereari fthoa unhool association, there is also a question about the last action taken. the district says a written proposal was submitted wednesday night. the union says it has not received any comprehensive proposal regarding teacher contracts. any are keeping their focus on impacts to students. >> we will continue to push for an agreement for parties to come to the table. it is our baby. >> i have reached out to both sides to say that we will mediate and help them to reach an agreement, because we have to get the strike ended as quickly as possible so kids are in school. amanda: state

tony thurmond speaking about the teachers strike during a school visit yesterday. parents remain in limbo and some are opting to take their children to one of four centers that have opened up all the strike continues. others still sending their children to school or keeping them home altogether. in the next half hour, we will hear directly from parents who are on both sides of the issue. that is in the next 30 minutes. for now, reporting live outside of skyline high school, amanda del castillo oh. reggie: -- kumasi: we are learning about the men arrested for a series of stabbings in davis. he is a former oakland resident and former u.c. davis student. 41-year-old carlos dominguez was at the same park are one of the stabbings happened. he was wearing clothing witnesses described from the third attack and had a knife on him at the time of the arrest. investigators say he is now facing murder and attempted murder charges.

reggie: breaking news out of los angeles county. look at this massive fire that broke out at a commercial building in commerce overnight. the three alarm fire opted around 4:00 this morning. the roof collapsed. it is not clear if anyone was inside at the time. we have not heard of any injuries and we do not know what caused the fire. 21-year-old is in custody after a second mass shooting in serbia in two days. eight people died in the shooting. police say the man started firing in a village, then left, drove to two more villages, and kept firing. this is about 37 miles away from belgrade, where eight children died in a school shooting earlier this week. the two incidents are not believed to be related. kumasi: president biden has reported they picked his next

kumasi: a new hotline has been launched in response to the increase in hate crimes here in california. hate crimes jumped 33% from 2021. governor newsom says he is sending a message that hate will no longer be tolerated. hateful actions reported to the hot light -- hotline can include those motivated by race, sexual

yesterday morning. it was put in place wednesday night due to a sinkhole in portola valley. that is still close this morning. reggie: we are learning more about a man accused in a series of stabbings near uc davis. . our reporter is in the newsroom with what we know. >> -- gloria: the suspect was a student at uc davis from fall of 2020 into last week, when the school says he was separated for academic reasons. many who knew the suspect tell abc 7 they are shocked by this news. the 21-year-old is facing charges of two counts of homicide and one count of attempted homicide. police say he stabbed three people near uc davis, all within a week. police say the attacks were violent and brazen, and people were killed, including one who was on housed.

a woman is recovering. police say dominguez had a backpack with a knife, consistent with what they were looking for. before college, dominguez lived in oakland. several people who knew him say they are shocked by this arrest, including his former high school football coach. >> not an agg player and never had any anger issues on the field. >> davis can be done with this. gloria: those who know davis say he had a supportive family -- has a supportive family who seemed involved in his life. he was a uc davis student until two days before the first attack. there is no information that he knew any of the victims. it is unclear what the motive might have been. he could be in court as soon monday. kumasi: thank you. for the second straight day, thousands of teachers in oakland are striking. schools are still open for the

day, and students are expected to attend. from parents. good morning, amanda. amanda: there are educators already getting started outside skyline. they are expected to hit the picket line at 7:30, in about an hour. day two. many parents are saying they hope a dealedy it is friday this morning. so far, there has been no indication that the union or district officials have even returned to the bargaining table, but teachers will return to the picket line. yesterday, more than 3000 district educators went on strike at 80 different school sites, followed by a massive rally. we heard from the oakland unified school district and education association, and there seems to be debate over the last action taken. the district says a written proposal was submitted wednesday night. the union says it has not

received any comprehensive proposal. this is all regarding teacher contracts. we found parents on both sides. well many parents have thrown their support behind teachers, a father we spoke with feels the 22% raise being offered by the district is one the teachers union should accept. remember, the union is asking for 23%. >> there are other parents who are in a difficult position because of the strike. they really think about us? they ask us to support them, what are we supporting? you are not getting a 1% raise. come on. >> trying to keep it normal for the kids. there is not a lot of school happening. there is undue no game going on. there are -- there is an uno game going on. there are stories being read. amanda: the last day of classes is scheduled for may 25. we also heard from superintendent tony thurmond, who spoke about the strike during a school visit yesterday.

had to be demolished after it partially collapsed. the california parks department says it could take a year to repair the beach. officials want public help to figure out how to best restore the area as they also conduct a sealevel rise study. people who live in santa cruz say they hope the new peer is on the way. >> i hope it is getting rebuilt and we can continue our walk all the way down. >> if they wanted to build it where people could go out and really be in the ocean, that is a fun thing, to be surrounded by the water, near the waves and everything. reggie: the parks says the project will cost around $690,000. enough is underway in southern california after two tornadoes touched down near l.a., small twisters that touched down in carson and compton. the first tornado in carson had winds of up to 70 mph. no one was hurt in either of these incidents, but some buildings were damaged, and at least one tree toppled.

kumasi: the nba playoffs continue tomorrow. the lakers and warriors playing in game three of the western conference semifinals. tipoff is at 5:30. reggie: a case made international headlines in the late 1980's and early 1990's. the brothers who shot and killed their parents in the beverly hills mansion are asking the courts to vacate their 1996 convictions. they're currently serving life in prison. jobina at the live desk with the evidence the menendez brothers now say they have. jobina: attorneys filed court papers on wednesday arguing that newly surfaced pieces of evidence should cause the court to vacate this whole thing.

one of those pieces of evidence is a letter written by eric to one of his cousins in early 1989, eight months before the killings, and recent allegations by a former member of the puerto rican boy band menudo that warrants reopening the case. jose menendez and his wife were gunned down by their sons in august of 1989. eric and lyle never denied carrying out the killings. they claimed their father sexually molested them for years and they killed their parents out of fear. prosecutors argue that the killings were financially motivated, and pointed to lavish spending sprees by the brothers after the fact. the brothers' first trial ended with jurors not able to reach a verdict. in the second trial, which lacked much of the sexual abuse testimony, the brothers were convicted of murder and
