there's a lot of excitement here in london ahead of the coronation of king charles. it's been a lot of excitement for me as well. i had the opportunity to pop by the palace yesterday for some tea and had a chance to tour the grounds, tour the inside of the palace to get a sense of royal life. i have to say, everyone here decided to be on the world stage for the coronation of king charles. this is something that has not happened in 70 years. so everyone here, all the londoners, everyone from the u.k. is excited for the world to see. >> since you're royalty, you must have felt at home in that palace yesterday? >> do you know what? i'll be honest with you, george. they asked me to stay. michael, here's your room. i said, no, no. i'm royalty, but i will not stay in the palace. i like my civilian life a little bit more. i knew you were going to get me with a royal joke, george.

>> we'll come back to you in just a little bit. we're going to begin with another bank on the brink of failure. there's questions if it could spread to other banks. and elizabeth schulze is tracking the latest. >> american businesses are hiring at a strong pace, despite concerns about the banking system and high interest rates. the government report shows that 253,000 jobs were added to the work force in april. that was better than expected. some of the biggest monthly gains in professional services, health care, and hospitality. the unemployment rate at 3.4% is still near a five decade low. now, there are concerns how the recent bank crisis will ripple through the economy under fears of recession. we are seeing regional bank stocks in turmoil. pack wes plunged another 50% as it looks for a

potential buyer. stocks have been higher in early trading, lenders say their finances are sound, customers are not racing to withdraw funds. the federal reserve wants job growth cooling off a bit to try to bring down inflation, but it wants to see businesses continuing to hire and consumers continuing to spend so the u.s. can avoid a recession. george? >> thanks. we go to washington. the proud boys found guilty of plotting the capitol assault. it has implications for the investigation and president trump's role in the january 6th attack. pierre thomas has the latest. >> reporter: george, good morning. the justice department has now proven the january 6th at tack was far from spontaneous but involved an organized conspiracy of seditioun to block the peaceful transfer of power. this morning a jury convicting the head of the proud boys and three top lieutenants of multiple

felonies including the rare charge of seditious conspiracy, plot to use force to keep donald trump in power. >> the evidence presented at trial detailed the extent of the violence at the capitol on january 6th and the central role these defendants played in setting into motion unlawful events of that day. >> reporter: prosecutors laying out a mountain of evidence including thousands of texts and videos like these showing proud boys were among the first to break through those metal barriers protecting the capitol. the government proved the men behind the violence, ethan nordeen, zachary real and the group's chief saw themselves as donald trump's army, thirsting for violence and organizing for action. they now face potentially decades in prison. terio was not at the capitol january 6th. on the evening of the insurrection -- >> pleasure all mine.

>> reporter: he was seen >> reporter: he was seen meeting with leaders of oath keepers in this under ground washington, d.c. parking garage. prosecutors say the next day he day he orchestrated the attack from afar texting his fellow proud boys at the height of the violence telling them, don't expletive leave. the jury also convicting a foot soldier who was seen in that infamous video using a stolen police shield to smash through a window, allowing the mob to breach the capitol. the jury found him guilty of a number of felonies including obstructing a congressional proceeding and assaulting officers. he faces more than 20 years in prison but the jury acquitted him on seditious conspiracy, unconvinced he was part of the initial plot. the proud boys have chauvinistic views on women were tied to donald trump long before january 6. their ranks only surged after trump called them

out by name at a debate. >> proud boys, stand back and stand by. >> reporter: attorneys for the defendant blame donald trump saying they were being made his scapegoats. as for trump and his associates, they remain under special counsel investigation for their role in january 6th. an investigation that appears to be nearing its final stages. eva? >> thanks, pierre. overseas to the war in ukraine and a fiery new message for putin from the leader of the russian mercenary fighters. marcus moore is in ukraine with the latest. >> reporter: russia's mercenary group has been at the forefront of russia's invasion of ukraine and for months locked in a deadly battle for batmout. a major blow to russian forces in the east, saying his troops will retreat may 10th because they're not getting the ammunition they need. they've been publicly feuding for months. now his accusing military

leaders in moscow of being, quote, cowards, denying him a victory due to, quote, petty envy. western officials estimate russia has lost 20,000 troops in the fight, at least 10,000 believed to be mercenaries and a war of words continues over an alleged drone attack at the kremlin. moscow claiming it was an attempt to assassinate vladamir putin, blaming the u.s. saying without question such an attack would be dictated from washington. john kirby called the allegation a blatant bold lie. >> one thing i can tell you for certain is that the united states was not involved in this incident in any way. >> reporter: officials have been poring over video of the incident but have not come to any conclusions. experts say the types of drones seen in the videos could not have reached moscow from ukraine. and back to that wagner announcement. it's significant because it could signal trouble, at the very least, disorganization, in the russian forces just as

they are preparing for rirsz h russia's mrand counter offensive, the juju. >> thanks for that update. back at home, protests overnight, demanding the arrest of the marine veteran who put a homeless man in a deadly choke hold. witnesses say the victim was acting e radically and threatening other passengers. whit johnson has the latest. >> reporter: overnight, protesters demanding the arrest of a marine veteran seen in this disturbing video putting a homeless man in a deadly chokehold. >> how many more? >> reporter: the nypd now reviewing that video and calling for witnesses to come forward. authorities say 30-year-old jordan neely was acting erradically and some witnesses reported he threatened passengers on the manhattan f train when the 24-year-old veteran stepped in. other passengers seen holding neely's arms. he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. new york's governor calling the case horrific. >> this is an individual who took the situation into his own hands. just looking at that video, you know it's wrong. no one has the right to take the life of another person.

>> reporter: but mayor adams urging the public to trust the process. >> we need to be extremely clear that from day one of this administration, i focused on we cannot have people with severe emotional illnesses on our subway system. >> reporter: neely, seen here on a subway train just days earlier. known for his performances as a michael jackson impersonator, neely had been arrested more than 40 times including for assault. overnighs mi retaining an aor saying in a statement, mr. neely suffered from mental illness which began at age 14 when he experienced the brutal murdaugh every of his mother. >> there is no reasonable belief that he had a weapon, that he had the ability to use anything to harm anyone and he was significantly outnumbered so there was really no basis at all for what transpired. >> reporter: the incident dividing new yorkers and

highlighting deep concerns about subway safety. >> i feel like resources to a community connection. >> not safe at all. unfortunately, we're not allowed to carry things but i wish we were able to do pepper spray or something. >> reporter: now, despite some high profile incidents, overall major crime on the transit system here in new york city is down slightly from last year. both the mayor and governor have deployed mental health resources to the subways, but many insist more needs to be done. george? >> okay, whit. thank you very much. supreme court now. growing questions about the justices and ethics after a new report about justice clarence thomas and a billionaire republican megadonor. terry moran reports from the supreme court. >> reporter: this latest revelation about clarence thomas accepting large gifts and financial assistance for himself and members of his family and not disclosing it is sharpening the focus on ethics at the court and on all the justices. clarence thomas and his wife said they took legal custody of their great

nephew in the late 1990s hoping to give the boy opportunities he would never have had. but it wasn't just the thomases who were providing those opportunities. pro-publica reporting harlan crow, whom thomas called a dear friend, paid at least some of the young man's tuition at two different private schools. the cost of one of the schools was $6,000 per month, but the exact total crow paid is unknown because thomas never disclosed the payments. federal ethics law requires justices to publicly report gifts, including those to spouses and dependent children. but those rules have come under renewed scrutiny. >> nobody polices the supreme court which is part of the problem with the disclosure rules. even if you made them perfect. they're voluntary, they're unenforceable. >> reporter: thomas has not commented. harlan crow acknowledged the payments but accused pro publica of trying to turn help into something nefarious or political.

crow and thomas' financial ties run deep. crow took thomas and his wife on lavish vacations including travel on a private jet and a super yacht. thomas didn't disclose those either, or the fact that crow also bought thomas' mother's house, which he reportedly still lives in. >> the drip, drip, drip of these destructive disclosures is going to destroy the united states supreme court. >> reporter: thomas' allies say he's being unfairly targeted and he isn't alone in facing questions. liberal justice sonia sotamayor did not recuse herself from cases involving her publisher. republicans call it a double standard but even some acknowledge something needs to change. >> i think the best thing for the chief justice roberts and the judges to do is to take this experience and go back and consider whether there are

changes in their code of ethics for the supreme court are appropriate. >> reporter: don't hold your breath for that. chief justice roberts was invited to that congressional hearing on ethics rules for the justices and he declined to attend. the washington post reporting a prominent judicial activist actually directed fees, consulting fees to ginny thomas, the wife of justice thomas. that wasn't reported either. >> reporter: that's right. the washington post reporting that leonard leo, the influential founder of the federalist society, arranged for up to $80,000 to be paid to ginny thomas for consulting work. he arranged those payments through a nonprofit group that did have interest before the court. and one of those payments he specified, quote, no mention of ginny on this, of course, leo said that over the years ginny thomas, who does work as a consultant, has been invaluable. george? >> terry moran, thank you very much. switching gears to the nba finals and steph curry and the warriors striking back, taking game 2

away from the crowning, coronation oven king charles and queen camilla. you can feel the excitement here. he became king the moment his mother passed eight months ago. this event is meant to formalize his commitment to the world. both religious and celebratory. something no one under the age of 70 has ever witnessed. charles was just 4 years old when his mother was crowned in 1953. this is expected to be a different type of coronation. monarchy said they are making the event more inclusive to better reflect the commonwealth in the world. i am here covering it with the help of this incredible team. right in front of buckingham palace is lara spencer. hey, lara. >> hello, michael. good morning. rainy buckingham palace where it all begins tomorrow. king charles and queen camilla leave buckingham

palace tomorrow around 5:20 a.m. eastern, 10:20 here in london. they will pass us in the diamond jubilee stage coach and head straight down the mall for the 1.4 mile procession to westminster abbey. then after the coronation, there is a second procession. the newly crowned king and queen will switch to the golden carriage, the one that carried queen elizabeth after her coronation in 1953. it will bring them back to buckingham palace, where they will get a small break before they head to the balcony. you may recognize it. it is where we have seen so many pictures, the royal family comes out, wave to the crowd after special events over the years. william and kate and their three children will also be on hand for that very special moment. prince harry is here for the coronation but is expected to leave right after the ceremony. it is his son's birthday also tomorrow so no word on whether or not we will see him on that balcony for the history making moment. even though all of it

starts tomorrow, the royals are not resting up. no. king charles is hosting a reception tonight welcoming foreign heads of state including dr. jill biden. we are seeing heightened security all over london as dignitaries from around the world are arriving. for more on that we want to head over to james who is along the coronation route. james, over to you. >> reporter: hey, lara. from a very rainy coronation route. it wouldn't be happening if it wasn't for a little rain. this has been a camp site now for days and days. it's starting to look like a festival. these are super fans of the royal family, desperate to get a front row seat and the procession passes by. you can see down there, these are food trucks. it really does feel like a festival, party atmosphere. look, it's true to say lot of people are excited about this coronation. also true to say that the monarchy is not as popular as it was. charles is certainly not as popular as his mother, so he has a lot of work

moments coming up. we are all about to witness history. this exact spot westminster abbey where every coronation has been held since 1066 with william the conquerer. king charles said he wants his coronation to be different, to represent a more modern monarchy. he's cut it down to about two hours. he slashed the guest list from 8,000 to 2,300 people. he'll still have about 100 heads of state and 20 royal families. he's also inviting people from many of the charities that him and his wife camilla run. many of the young people those charities have helped directly. we are also learning about more details. look at some beautiful photos. the flowers are gorgeous. they're all seasonal flowers, many of the branches come from beach trees planted by his parents. a meaningful moment with those flowers tomorrow as well. the other major moment we

there have been -- the monarchy faces some real questions about the younger generation and whether it should exist or not. do you think the spectacle that we're going to see tomorrow is going to pay off or will it be seen as out of touch? >> i think it's going to be a great historic moment. for the people of the other realms. lots of people, lots of happy people. i do think we're in a moment of transition in the monarchy. i think the palace shouldn't be complacent at the moment. all the younger people are not really enamored with the idea of monarchy. they were disappointed what happened with harry and meghan. meghan they feel got a rough ride. lot of people saw harry as the only one who's in touch with the younger generation. i think the king and queen, although they're great people, i know the king fairly well covering this job for 30 years. i think he's a great guy. the queen is a great lady. but they're quite old, actually, in terms of what the younger people want. lot of this is going to fall on the shoulders of william and kate. very popular people. it's quite interesting.

i think they're incorporating the little george into the actual ceremony. he will be part of the event. that's showing you that continuity. giving everyone a taste of what's to come. >> the future. the future. i know, victoria, as robert said, he talked about harry and meghan and what he felt a lot of people felt that was a rough ride they got here at home. but harry is going to be publicly reunited with his family for the first time since his book came out. when i spoke to him back in january, his feelings were very raw. do you think it will be tough for him to be here for the coronation? >> i think it must be tough for him personally. i certainly think people are prepared for there to be some tension, particularly between the brothers. i don't think harry being here is a sign that everything is resolved behind the scenes. but i do think this is a very important show of unity for the family. harry is coming here to support his father.

juju? >> thanks, eva. now to new details in the deadly campus stabbing spree at uc davis. police arresting a former student. we are tracking the latest. with kayna whitworth. >> reporter: good morning. overnight a suspect in custody after an urgent manhunt looking for someone responsible for the stabbing of three people, two of them died. this all happened in a northern california college town just west of sacramento. according to davis police, carlos dominguez was taken into custody after numerous tipsters reported a person matching his description in a local park. authorities say he was actually wearing the same clothes as those described by witnesses in the third stabbing. the three stabbings all happened at night. the father of one of the victims who was attacked and killed in sycamore park saturday night saying they are now preparing for his funeral instead of his graduation party.

it is also something that parliament requires. parliament is in charge. it's amazing that it's 1050 years since the first coronation took place here. in almost every respect we're going to witness those parts of the coronation that took place all that time ago again in westminster abbey. we do like that tradition. >> even the chair, the history of the chair is so amazing. it's so interesting to witness. something we in america don't get a chance to do. how important is the coronation of overseas relations, would you say? >> the united kingdom knows the world looks to this country to get stuff right. for its tradition to be properly and with pageantry and display done well. and i sense that because the king is not only going to be crowned king of the united kingdom, but also 14 other nations. that is quite significant. he's also head of the commonwealth although that's not directly associated. all those nations have

some vested interest in this particular moment. >> so many of them are here now. we've seen security beefed up. >> they're all in there now, in with the king. >> just behind us. it's so very exciting. you even brought the sun out. i'm sounding very british suddenly. we've heard over and over from the palace that this will be different than his mother's coronation. can you share with us what you think those major differences will be? >> well, first of all, this is the first coronation in the post deferential age. because so much has changed from the late queen's reign. they no longer have a place in parliament. although some will be there it's much more about the nation and the society today. it's going to be a lot shorter. all the integral parts that are vital, that were written down in the earliest order, are still going to be played out. >> we talked about them

with abc news. you told us about the five parts of the ceremony, that they will not change. those have been in place for so very long. >> i think every part of it is being recognized as having stories to tell. there is this great narrative. if you look at all the crown jewels and imagine you've been given them in your job leading your business, they teach you to be a good leader. they teach you to be wise, gentle in the power you've got and to apply justice. it has resonance way beyond the king. he knows the history of coronations. that is that people watch them and they look. if anything goes wrong it's a difficulty for him. i think that's why when i spoke to the queen about her coronation, she said she couldn't really remember it clearly, but she could remember her father's. she couldn't remember hers because she had so much to remember in the process of it. >>, e apne she almost jewels, the orb.

destination and have some high tea. give us the inside scoop. king and queen's favorite tea? >> well, i would never divulge the secrets of what they drink. what i will say is that we do a tea called royal blend, which we send down to the palace very regularly. i wouldn't like to say who actually drinks it. >> mum's the word. i have to say i love, love it. 316-year-old luxury food store. just so much to see there. tell us about the pressure and how you come up with this blend that is worthy of the king and the coronation? >> this is a history that's been going back 1707, the reign of queen anne when it was founded by a foot man to queen anne who asked permission to sell candles from the palace on picadilly. we've been trading there ever since. over time, we've become more and more proud and close about our relationship with the
