declared that the covid national emergency can be over. now, he did do it a year after the rest of us did. [laughter] i learned a lot during the pandemic. i learned that people who are most resistant to the government telling them what to do also happen to be the people who most need the government to tell them what to do. [laughter] ironically are the same people who are most supportive of the government telling other people what to do. but it was not all bad. there were some positives. people helped each other. we found out who in our communities care about others and maybe most importantly, we have enough toilet paper to last the rest of our lives. [cheers and applause] the end of the covid area is surprisingly kind of bittersweet. this morning, i did something -- i wiped down my groceries just for old times' sake. i bought a bottle of purell and wiped it down with purell. to help with this time, we thought it might be cathartic for all of you and for us to

[cheers and applause] >> jimmy: welcome back to the show. tonight from "the goldbergs" on abc, wendi mclendon-covey is with us and then later, they are here all week long. this is their new album. it is called "72 seasons." metallica. our first guest is the recipient of six emmys, two peabody awards, a presidential medal of freedom, and the most celebrated earlobes in television history. her birthday special, "carol burnett: 90 years of laughter + love," airs april 26 on nbc.

[cheers and applause] ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> jimmy: how are you? >> carol: hello. >> jimmy: thank you for coming. it is great to have you here. >> carol: i love seeing you. >> jimmy: and i think about people who are real locals and when i think about locals, i don't really necessarily think about carol burnett. but you are as local as it gets. you went to high school right across the street. you shot your special right down the block. you grew up in an apartment like right down. >> carol: and wilcox, north of hollywood boulevard, and the

neighborhood kids, we used to climb the hollywood sign. >> jimmy: you used to climb the hollywood sign. >> carol: the o's are my favorite. >> jimmy: they seem like the hardest ones. >> carol: it was like rough scaffolding. splinters and it was a wonder we did not break our necks. we loved climbing the side. >> jimmy: now they have snipers up there. >> carol: i know. >> jimmy: was this neighborhood -- it is nicer now than it was back in the '50s, right? >> carol: no. >> jimmy: no. [laughs] you did not have dirty spongebob and superman wandering around? >> carol: it was a nice neighborhood. we never had to lock our doors or anything like that. >> jimmy: now we don't even have doors. [laughter] it is great to have you here. i wonder, when people call you a legend, do you like that? >> carol: no. >> jimmy: oh. i was wondering because most legends did not exist and you

exist. i see you before my eyes. >> carol: here we are. [cheers and applause] >> jimmy: a lot of people, myself included, we would watch you every saturday night, and it was like a big part of our week, a big part of our lives, such a major thing. >> carol: that is wonderful to hear. >> jimmy: and now to have this special on your birthday, 90th birthday. [cheers and applause] i mean, to me, you have always been famous, but what is it like to have this body of work that goes back so far and so beloved and important to people? >> carol: what a question. i'm just thrilled to be here, and i say i'm happy that at this age i have got all my parts. [laughter] >> jimmy: that is good. >> carol: i have my hips and my knees, and i pick my brain sometimes.

>> jimmy: it is interesting that you grew up in l.a. and then you started your career in new york, which is kind of the reverse of how a lot of people do it. out of college, you went to ucla, right? >> carol: yes, and then i got a chance to move to new york, and i had a beneficiary who lent me the money to go to new york who was very -- >> jimmy: was a donald trump? [laughter] [cheers and applause] >> carol: that was a low blow. >> jimmy: i heard he likes to give money to women for now reason at all. [laughter] >> carol: what were we are talking about? >> jimmy: you moved to new york. >> carol: i moved to new york, and i borrowed money, and i did not know where i was going to live, and i checked into the algonquin hotel, and it was $9 a night.

now, that was very expensive. >> jimmy: it was, wow. >> carol: i was raised by my grandmother, you know, wilcox, in one room, and it was $30 a month. so $9 a day was quite a bit. >> jimmy: yeah. >> carol: and i had a chance to move to another place called the rehearsal club, which was brownstone on 54th street. one room was four roommates, five women and one room. we had a cart and a dresser. a closet and one bathroom with all of these five women. >> jimmy: did you keep in touch with any of those women? >> carol: oh, yes. they were all different. there was one who had been around the block a few times. [laughter] and there was one who was status glossy actress, who never paid. traveled great. >> carol: there was another girl from england.

tinker was her name. cute with curls. she was british but she was into spanish dancing and then there was a ballerina, yvonne craig was her name. she later became that girl. >> jimmy: oh, yeah, she was on batman. >> carol: it was the five of us and i remember my grandmother sent me $20 to buy a coat because i had never been in cold weather. i lived out here in texas and arizona. i bought a coat and it was wool and it was kind of nubby, like, white and black and so forth. i was proud of it. i thought it was great and i modeled it in front of the tough girl in -- the one that had been around the block. >> jimmy: oh, yeah. >> carol: i said, what do you think? she said, it looks like on board linoleum. [laughter] i was embarrassed to wear there from then on. >> jimmy: oh, wow.

[laughter] were you working at that time? >> carol: i had a part-time job in a ladies tea room as a hatch act girl. room and oh. >> carol: not too many women check their hats. but there was an oyster bar downstairs at -- that the men would go to and they would pick their -- take their coats with them because they could hang them on some pegs downstairs. once in a while, i would grab one. take your coat and i would get the coat. now i have a man's coat, right? i only got my tips. i had no salary. downstairs, i would take, you know, the little thing in the back that you hang your coat on? >> jimmy: yeah, the little loop. >> carol: the little loop. i would cut that off and then i would sew it back on with a different color thread. and when he came back up, i would say, this was broken but i

sewed it back. >> carol: i'm from the west coast and most of my folks still live out there so i get a chance to see them very often. the first time i was on a television show back here in new york, i coat up a secret signal. holding my ear which meant hello to my grandmother in california. once was alright but then my mother and my little sister wanted to know why i did not have a special secret signal which meant hello to them. so then the next time -- the next time i was on a television show, this man, does this meant my mother. is meant, hello my grandmother. this meant, hello, my little sister. pretty soon the whole family wanted to get into the act. the only trouble is i come from a very large family. so i pray the next time i ever am on a television show, it may look a little bit like this. ♪ i can make my fantastic dream come true ♪ ♪ look at me ♪

gilligan created that. so better call saul came in and i actually got hooked on that and his partner was peter gould and he created it, too and then i met vince and his wife, holly. we had dinner and he said, someday, i may write a little thing for you for assault. i said, i care if it is one sentence. i will be there. and so he wrote this and it was a great moment for me to play this character who finally brings down saul at the end. it is like, mrs. wiggins did him in. >> jimmy: yeah. mrs. wiggins. were doing stuff where she was going to be my kid sister that we would do occasionally and harvey and i were raising -- we were married and we were raising my kid sister. she started out as my kid sister and wound up playing my mother. [laughter] >> carol: she is wonderful. >> jimmy: i bet people probably ask you all the time if you see her and they want to know if you guys are together. >> carol: we are very, very close. >> jimmy: yeah, that is wonderful. that is great. [applause] even if you are not, you can lie about it and it makes people feel better. you also learned that one of our guests who is going to be here, you were on that show "finding your roots" on pbs and learned that bill hader is related to you. >> carol: we are distantly related. >> jimmy: maybe you can bring harry to justice. that is -- boy, that is something else.

>> carol: it is great. >> jimmy: do you think there is something in your dna that there is some connection that makes you guys both two of the greatest sketch comedy performers of all time? >> carol: i have no idea, but i'm very thrilled that we are related. >> jimmy: have you gotten together to discuss this? >> carol: no, but he had a family reunion he said, the burnett family reunion party not too long ago. >> jimmy: right. one that you were not at but he was with the other burnetts. it is great to have you here and i'm grateful. i cannot wait to see your home life boiled down to an hour really. right? two hours ago, two hours. that is even better. amazing costume designer sent home a bag of goodies for me and one of the things is a quilt and it had -- here it comes again. one of george segal's sweatshirts. >> jimmy: that is the weirdest thing i have ever heard anyone cry about. >> wendi: i know. >> jimmy: but his sweatshirts are. and -- >> wendi: and geddings not all over his sweatshirt. yes, i'm upset. >> jimmy: let me get you a tissue. you are welcome. i want to -- i know you are an art collector. i like this idea because you have in their bathroom you have a little museum, right? >> wendi: yes, we have two big bathrooms that are dedicated to crap, no pun intended. but i collect horrible art. one bathroom is the portraits

and one is the animals and this pretty lady i must have paid at least seven dollars for her and i can replace her. at that price. >> jimmy: not anybody you know? >> wendi: i don't know who it is. >> jimmy: where did you get this? >> wendi: it must have been a garage sale. but i stole this idea from a place called the museum of bad art which is a place. >> jimmy: yeah, i have heard of that place. >> wendi: so my husband and i are always on the lookout for the weirdest portraits we can find. and see, obviously, the artist had some skill but they cannot do hands. so they just said, forget it. >> jimmy: oh, yeah. she had an accident. >> wendi: maybe. maybe. but then bring me no end of happiness. here is shakespeare. shakespeare. >> jimmy: like a mousy -- >> wendi: like to be or not to be. trevon diggs looks like an episode of alice where the

character is dressed up as shakespeare. the references are very fresh. this is -- >> wendi: she is one of my favorites. but it looks like she smelled it and she dealt it. [laughter] >> wendi: she has a very guilty look on her face. right? every time i look at her, i'm laughing. >> jimmy: somewhat accusatory. this is great for the bathroom. >> wendi: she is staring right at you. >> jimmy: this is quite a masterpiece for this is -- >> wendi: there is some talent there. you can tell it is a lady in a bikini. there is something with the perspective and the hand transplant that -- [laughter] right in here. >> jimmy: and then this whole -- >> wendi: something is askew. >> jimmy: this is where they started drinking.
