responsibly. lauren martinez, abc7 news. dan: a uc berkeley professor is apologizing after a falsely claiming -- after falsely claiming indigenous heritage for years. the policy and management professor, elizabeth huber, says she's actually white. in a statement she says she grew up believing she was native american. hoover conducted during research last year after rising concerns about her heritage. results show that she has no trace of native american lineage. in the east bay, sky7 was over teachers on the picket lines today in oakland as the strike entered its second day. there's no signs of progress being made and each side is pointing the finger on why they have not returned to the bargaining table. reporter: it started with this statement on thursday by the school board president, mike hutchinson, stating the teachers union abruptly stopped negotiating, even though they were so close to finalizing a

salary agreement. >> we want to continue negotiating. we don't want a strike. but they've left the table and broken off discussions, not us. reporter: today, a small group of teachers showed up at his house, as he was in pajamas and drinking his morning coffee. in front of us, a member teachers union bargaining team was on the phone assuring hutchinson they were at the table ready to negotiate. >> has already been holding up negotiations -- our team been holding up negotiations? reporter: so how can both sides say they are at the table when they are clearly not meeting? hutchinson claims ousd officials were at some point negotiating directly with the interim president and vice president of the union, when a salary proposal was given to both of them. and instead of consulting with

their own bargaining team, they walked away and called for a strike. >> that is an accurate. -- is not accurate. they sent it to us after they left. i don't know what time. midnight or something. we never got that before. reporter: the union says everyone including the bargaining team now has that salary proposal, even though the union president admitted he has not had time to really digest a proposal -- the proposal. >> i'm confused. they are saying they are at the table. you are saying you are at the table. >> i'm confused. we were there. the team were there. our team has 50 members that were there. reporter: during this morning's surprise visit, union members told hutchinson the district was not at the table because they needed an authorization from him and the board. >> they've been authorized to negotiate. that's how we have been engaging in negotiations. there no call from the school board necessary to continue negotiations. is been authorized.

reporter: to clarify, hutchinson told us to school district's bargaining team is not authorized to negotiate anything outside of the scope of the contract, like common good proposals. why? he says it would be fiscally irresponsible to add proposals the district cannot afford. especially given that oakland unified is still under receivership from the state. with regard to the actual contract, if accepted by the union, the district will carve out an additional $70 million from the general fund to pay for the salary increases. that means some programs will have to go. i also spoke to some teachers attending today's rally and they said they are worried if the strike continues and students don't return before the end of the school year, it could have a negative impact on them. on the teachers. even though many parents have expressed their support.

ama: are going to be installed along arguello boulevard in san francisco after the death of a champion cyclist, according to the chronicle. sfmta controls one the presidio trust controls the other. the plan calls for protected lanes and speed cushions. there were calls for improvements to be made after ethan b. died in a collision last month. the crash remains under investigation. the clearing of the wood street encampment in oakland is done. the site spent about 25 city blocks at one point, with about 300 on house people living in rvs or makeshift shelters. oakland city officials say the majority of the 70 people still living there moved into city up -- city operated shelter services. tons of trash and debris were hauled away and 39 vehicles towed, including nine stolen vehicles. the site has to be cleared in order for construction to begin on an affordable housing complex. >> new developments tonight with

it? >> when you have too much water, the saliency levels change. dan: as a result, the sff of the aquaas alreadyed 4onof salt to the fish tanks in the bay that hold a total of 750,000 gallons. what happens if you don't add the salt? >> the animals in the are adaptive and can move into areas that are deeper and have more salt content. but the animals in the tunnels, they need the precise quantity in the tanks. dan: could it be dangerous without it? >> it could be. dan: the spring snow melt is only just beginning as we move into summer the process will only increase which means the salinity level in the bay will continue to fluctuate. biologists will spend the next months on silly monitoring the tanks mey are respole for.
