are rolling down the street with pride. this cinco de mayo, cruising is not a fine in san jose. these classic custom-built joined the parade of others, driving up anton with mexican flags. earlier in the day, cinco de mayo festivities started out at a plaza in east san jose. on and off again rain didn't stop the dancing horses or the band from playing. >> rain or shine. it is still the same thing. it is still cinco de mayo. reporter: she wanted to bring her family out to celebrate. >> as part of our culture. we have to keep our culture going. to show the kids needs to keep going and going. reporter: she has been a vendor at this parking lot since 2005. she says this year, turnout has been rough. >> maybe 1000, 2000,

responsibly. lauren martinez, abc7 news. dan: a uc berkeley professor is apologizing after a falsely claiming -- after falsely claiming indigenous heritage for years. the policy and management professor, elizabeth huber, says she's actually white. in a statement she says she grew up believing she was native american. hoover conducted during research last year after rising concerns about her heritage. results show that she has no trace of native american lineage. in the east bay, sky7 was over teachers on the picket lines today in oakland as the strike entered its second day. there's no signs of progress being made and each side is pointing the finger on why they have not returned to the bargaining table. reporter: it started with this statement on thursday by the school board president, mike hutchinson, stating the teachers union abruptly stopped negotiating, even though they were so close to finalizing a

salary agreement. >> we want to continue negotiating. we don't want a strike. but they've left the table and broken off discussions, not us. reporter: today, a small group of teachers showed up at his house, as he was in pajamas and drinking his morning coffee. in front of us, a member teachers union bargaining team was on the phone assuring hutchinson they were at the table ready to negotiate. >> has already been holding up negotiations -- our team been holding up negotiations? reporter: so how can both sides say they are at the table when they are clearly not meeting? hutchinson claims ousd officials were at some point negotiating directly with the interim president and vice president of the union, when a salary proposal was given to both of them. and instead of consulting with

their own bargaining team, they walked away and called for a strike. >> that is an accurate. -- is not accurate. they sent it to us after they left. i don't know what time. midnight or something. we never got that before. reporter: the union says everyone including the bargaining team now has that salary proposal, even though the union president admitted he has not had time to really digest a proposal -- the proposal. >> i'm confused. they are saying they are at the table. you are saying you are at the table. >> i'm confused. we were there. the team were there. our team has 50 members that were there. reporter: during this morning's surprise visit, union members told hutchinson the district was not at the table because they needed an authorization from him and the board. >> they've been authorized to negotiate. that's how we have been engaging in negotiations. there no call from the school board necessary to continue negotiations. is been authorized.

reporter: to clarify, hutchinson told us to school district's bargaining team is not authorized to negotiate anything outside of the scope of the contract, like common good proposals. why? he says it would be fiscally irresponsible to add proposals the district cannot afford. especially given that oakland unified is still under receivership from the state. with regard to the actual contract, if accepted by the union, the district will carve out an additional $70 million from the general fund to pay for the salary increases. that means some programs will have to go. i also spoke to some teachers attending today's rally and they said they are worried if the strike continues and students don't return before the end of the school year, it could have a negative impact on them. on the teachers. even though many parents have expressed their support.

ama: are going to be installed along arguello boulevard in san francisco after the death of a champion cyclist, according to the chronicle. sfmta controls one the presidio trust controls the other. the plan calls for protected lanes and speed cushions. there were calls for improvements to be made after ethan b. died in a collision last month. the crash remains under investigation. the clearing of the wood street encampment in oakland is done. the site spent about 25 city blocks at one point, with about 300 on house people living in rvs or makeshift shelters. oakland city officials say the majority of the 70 people still living there moved into city up -- city operated shelter services. tons of trash and debris were hauled away and 39 vehicles towed, including nine stolen vehicles. the site has to be cleared in order for construction to begin on an affordable housing complex. >> new developments tonight with

a suspect arrest or a string of stabbings that left the davis community on edge. carlos domingues plead not guilty in a yolo county courtroom today. is accused of stabbing three people, killing two of them and leaving one woman severely injured. police say he was a student at uc davis until last week, when he was separated for academic reasons. he is being held without bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on monday. ama: d snyder is responding after sf pride organizers dropped the band's song as the anthem for this year's celebration. organizers are upset dee snider opposes children undergoing sex reassignment treatments. he believes transitioning should be done as an adult. he wrote that kids don't have the mental capability to make rational, logical decisions on things of a magnitude that will affect them the rest of their lives. he says he is an ally to the transgender community even if he disagrees with some viewpoints. in response, sf pride today said

decades, betsy has been collected any and -- collecting any and everything having to do with britain's royal family. betsy says she doesn't know exactly how many pieces she has, but estimates it is in the hundreds. she tells me her fascination with the monarchy started when she was a little girl, growing up in virginia. at that time, the late queen elizabeth had just had her own coronation. in her 20's, the young monarch caught betsy's attention. >> she was extraordinary. have enormous admiration for her. reporter: now after years of collecting, she says she's likely stopped. she's packed most of her items in boxes and hopes to be able to sell them to anyone who might be interested. >> i would love for someone to take it all at once. and get rid of what they don't want. reporter: not to keep the money but instead to donate it to a worthy cause. >> i've been torn between foodanks or

they hope to bring it back to san jose at some point. anyone who bought a ticket for this year's event will receive a refund. dan: tonight's deep at 11:00 focuses on a consequence of all the rain and snow we had this winter that you don't hear about very much. i met with ceo of the aquarium of the bay george jacobs to talk about this. we have had this fantastic winter in terms of rain and snow. which has brought us great benefit in terms of our drought. but it's caused another problem out here in the bay. >> sure. one of the things that happens with the rain and also the melting snow in tahoe is level changes in the san francisco bay. dan: normally the salinity level in the bay is 34 parts per 1000. because of the wet winter, it is now at roughly 31 parts per 1000. that doesn't sound like a big number but is significant, isn't

it? >> when you have too much water, the saliency levels change. dan: as a result, the sff of the aquaas alreadyed 4onof salt to the fish tanks in the bay that hold a total of 750,000 gallons. what happens if you don't add the salt? >> the animals in the are adaptive and can move into areas that are deeper and have more salt content. but the animals in the tunnels, they need the precise quantity in the tanks. dan: could it be dangerous without it? >> it could be. dan: the spring snow melt is only just beginning as we move into summer the process will only increase which means the salinity level in the bay will continue to fluctuate. biologists will spend the next months on silly monitoring the tanks mey are respole for.

ama: nevado fire esteeming up with local agencies to prevent wildfires from causing extensive damage. the plan is to build a massive safety zone or shaded break around the city of nevado. it would be one of the largest fire prevention projects in marin county history. it will surround the city flatlands and hills stretching 60 miles. >> we will decrease the rate of spread of the fire and intensity, we give our residents more time to evacuate and our firefighters an opportunity to put the fire out. ama: work is currently underway along the hillside clearing fell immobile and non-native brush -- clearing flammable and non-native brush. the project is expected to be completed within five years funded through state and federal grants. dan: the street style dance competition was in oakland tonight. 16 dancers took center stage to show off their moves in front of hundreds of people outside oakland city hall. each dancer was put to the test

so all the temperature control, all the barrels, these are all fermentation tanks. so we can control everything from here. i was previously in the technology world and i was raised in san mateo. loved napa valley growing up. so i spent a lot of time up here. and as a result, after we sold the computer company, i saw an opportunity to invest in property here and kind of fulfill a lifelong dream of building a winery in the northern part of napa valley. when people walk in our door, they're in a good mood and it's only going to get better. so it's very rewarding to share this experience with those people. i get a lot of joy out of watching their happiness and then them walking away with a great experience that they'll tell a friend or two. they'll open a bottle, and these memories will come back and hopefully they'll share those with their friends. and, you know, we're here to create
