unfolding for the first time in seven decades. it is coronation day in the uk. the rain falling in london, of course. it could not dampen the festive mood. >> janai: the king and queen taking to the iconic balcony at buckingham palace, the fly passet happening overhead and earlier, king charles crowned westminster abbey at attended by more than 2,000 guests. many of them dignitaries and celebrities and a display of pomp and pageantry, millions watching around the world and thousands camping out overnight just to get a glimpse of the king and queen along the route in a horse-drawn carriage. >> gio: and charles is the 40th sovereign to be crowned and he is also the oldest. part of his mission is shoring up support for the morning key at a time when support is not what it was when his mother reigned. from the looks of the cross there, plenty of support on his coronation day. we have the key moments. live team coverage across

ian pannell has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. coronations typically at home for rawls and nobles to push off their robes watercolors like us get to look at it from afar. there's definitely bring plenty of that old school pomp and members of the british royal family represented from over 200 countries around 100 heads of state. president biden not attending but the first lady was here to get the width her granddaughter. i think what was notable about the guest list was that there was hundreds of young people representing charitable organizations. this was much more diverse than the late queen's coronation. the brother was not of the guest list although it is unclear if he really would have wanted to attend given the history of the relationship between charles and camilla. harry was here. meghan did not attend. overall, it was a slimmed-down guest list with a mere 2,300 attending. and i think an attempt to show that charles is more in touch with modern britain.

awaiting his whole life for this very moment. by his side, queen camilla and maggie rulli is back with their world love story. good morning, once again. >> reporter: good morning. charles and camilla are still busy getting their photos taken in buckingham palace. we were standing right here. the two the two of them arrived in westminster abbey. after decades of the very. look controversial relationship, today, two were crowned king and queen. ♪ ♪ charles and camilla's attraction apparent from those early meetings in their 20s. now still strong after 18 years of marriage. the first reported met at a polo match in the 1970s. charles almost instantly smitten with camilla. >> clearly a lot of feeling there. when he went away to serve in the royal navy he returned and she had become engaged to andrew

and that was the beginning of them going their separate ways with their first marriages. >> reporter: they eventually rekindled their romance. accusations of coupling up while they were married. published in a book unleashing a flood of speculation. in 1993, british tabloid leaking details of intimate conversation between charles and camilla, recently resurfacing as a plotline in "the crown coat. -- "the crown." shocking admission the following year saying he had not always been faithful. >> a lot of polls saying -- a lot of people in the church of england, saying he was not fit to be king because he cheated in his marriage. >> reporter: sympathy for diana skyrocketing. camilla hounded by reporters.

famously saying there were three of us in this marriage so it was a bit crowded. from this a very shaky foundation, charles and camilla with a strong partnership. >> she seems to have his personality where she is able to let things go to able to take more positive view. >> reporter: marrying in 2005 and creating a more positive spin on their public image as husband and wife. and i think it should be a love story because their love story is not of fairytales. it is about real life. >> reporter: it feels official now, guys. many were calling her queen consort but today, officially the official website for the royal family changed her name to simply the queen. whit? >> whit: and the king and queen keeping this coronation a family affair. we saw some of the youngest royals stealing the show as we well.

>> reporter: they seem to always steal the show. they are impossibly cute. big roles as well. prince george, second in line to the throne. a page for his grandfather. nine years old, actually the youngest future king to ever have a role in the coronation. not to be outdone his younger siblings charlotte and prince louis. they were also just amazing. we were standing right here to watch them drive past and we saw their little hands waiting out the window. i loved watching them because they were kind of stirring up against the window looking out in all of everything. reminding us that yes, they are royalty but they are kids. this is a pretty special day. >> whit: we were waiting for prince louis to have his moment. maggie, i want to get your perspective. you are right there in the mix. sum it up for us. what was it like? >> reporter: you can still hear the bells. and i think sums up what is happening across the city, across the country, around the

commonwealth. they of coronation is just a day of pure celebration. that is why we are all here. there's tradition. there's pomp and circumstance. there's also so much joy and i think i would be remiss not to also bring up again just to history. standing here, yes, the belt, at that moment where king charles walked down and you saw him with the crown on his head. you feel the weight of history that was happening and behind me westminster abbey, every coronation 1066 has happened right here on these grounds. now king charles joins the ranks. he is a part of history and all of us today watching. all of us looking up. front row seat. something you read about in textbooks and we all have been a part of it and we have the excitement of what this means for the future modern monarchy. we saw all the changes that king charles brought to the coronation. what change is he going to bring to the monarchy? that is the big question mark and i think something that we can all look forward to seeing how it turns out.
