celebration. 70 years in the making. it is saturday, may 6. it was so cool to watch. so much history. our producer was saying no one under the age of 70 had seen a coronation before. >> very cool. good morning. did the rain wake you up? it was coming down. the level one system. as you look closer, we still have showers from san francisco all the way down highway one and 280. slick roadways into the east bay. looking at the wet weather down around mount hamilton and the summit. very 55 palo alto. 53 in santa cruz. a cool day at the beach. numbers climbing through the 50's. mid 50's in the east bay valleys. the plan will be for a level one system to fade away by noon.

low 60's to mid 60's in the inland valleys with sunny breaks. >> now to the historic moment for the british monarchy with the coronation of king charles iii and queen consort camilla. an up close look at the crowning ceremony in london. >> it was a moment 70 years in the making. king charles the third alongside queen camilla officially crowned at westminster abbey. not seen since coronation in 1950 three. >> the last time we saw the introduction of king charles, a very somber moment. this is a moment of celebration, the joyous announcement of his -- the beginning of his reign. >> the day kicking off in buckingham palace. the royal couple in the diamond jubilee state coach. over 2000 guests and over 100 heads of state, including first lady jill biden and members of the royal family.

they were seen lighting fireworks were filming the incident. this was close to lake merritt at 10th and oak street. multiple cars on fire when police arrived. authorities eventually put out the flames as officers cleared traffic. we are working to find out if any arrests were made. oakland athletics tv announcer glen kuiper is apologizing after he was hurt saying a racist epithet during a sports broadcast. it happened during a pregame segment before they took on the royals. >> we had a phenomenal day today -- you see him and arthur bryant's barbecue all in the span of 2.5 hours. -- welcome back, i just want to -- earlier in the show, i said something, did not quite come out the way i wanted it to. i just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than i meant it to be said.

i just wanted to apologize for that. >> he was referring to the negro league's baseball museum but appeared to saa racial slur instead. the a's releas a statement saying the language used is unacceptable and they are working to address the situation. in the east bay, no sign of progress made on the others of the teacher strike. sky 7 flew over a crowd of teachers on the picket lines which was the seventh day of the strike. day three is today. each site is blaming the other. senior education reporter sorts out the situation. >> it started with this statement on thursday by the school board president stating that the teachers union abruptly stopped negotiating, even though they were so close to finalizing a salary agreement. >> we don't want a strike.

they have left the table and broken off discussions, not us. >> the small group of teachers showed up at his house as he was in pajamas and drinking his morning coffee. right in front of us, a member of the teachers union bargaining team was on the phone assuring hutchinson they were at the table ready to negotiate. >> how has the bargaining team been holding up negotiations? >> there are witnesses to this. >> how can both sides say they are at the table when they are clearly not meeting? hutchinson claims officials were at some point negotiating directly with the interim president and vice president of the union when the salary proposal was given to both of them and instead of consulting with their own bargaining team, they walked away and called for a strike. >> that is inaccurate.

they sent it to us after they left. we never got that. >> everyone including the bargaining team now has the salary proposal, even though the union president admitted he has not had time to really digest the proposal. >> you are saying you are saying you're at the table, they are saying they are at the table. >> i'm confused, we are there. our team is there. 50 witnesses are there. our team has 50 members. >> during the surprise visit, union members said they were not at the table because they needed an authorization from him at the board. negotiate, that is how they have been engaging in negotiations. there is no call from the school board necessary to continue negotiations. >> to clarify, hutchinson told us the school districts bargaining team is not authorized to negotiate anything

outside of the scope of the contract like common good proposals. he says it would be fiscally irresponsible to add proposals the district cannot afford. especially given oakland unified is still under receivership from the state. >> with regard to the actual contract, the district will carve out an additional $70 million from the fund to pay for the salary increases. that means some programs will have to go. i also spoke to some teachers, they are worried if the strike continues and students don't return before the end of the school year, it could have a negative impact on the teachers. even though many parents have expressed their support. in the newsroom, lyanne melendez. >> the last time oakland teachers went on strike was in 2019. it lasted a week. we will stay on top of it takes.

follow the latest on the abc7 bay area app on your smartphone or wherever you stream. uc berkeley professor apologizing for falsely claiming an indigenous heritage for years. the environmental policy professor said she's actually white. in a statement, she grew up believing she was native american. hoover conducted genealogical research after rising concerns about her heritage. results showed she had no trace of native american lineage. protected bike lanes will be installed along boulevard following the death of a champion cyclist. they control one stretch whether presidio trust controls the other. it calls for not only protected lanes, but speed cushions. there were calls for improvements to be made after ethan boys died in a crash. the incident is under investigation. the suspect arrested in a string of stabbings in davis has plead not guilty.

force plans. >> more than two years after a b 2131 signed into law, first in the nation task force nearing the end of its work and answering the question of what reparations could look like. >> very work intensive, fastrak. we are in the thick of the most challenging aspect. >> she's the chair of twofold mission. study slavery and its negative effects on african-americans, and develop proposals for remedies for the atrocities of that harm through policy changes and potentially cash payments. those recommendations drafted at these public forums at the state. we sat down with several members of the nine person task force to get a better understanding of the recommendations voted on this weekend and delivered to lawmakers.

>> why should the hook for reparations? >> the idea california has a role to play in this is actually very straightforward. when you think about it, we are thinking about things that are jim crow racism, thinking about the use of eminent domain. in many ways to f payment of the state. the principal still enacted during slavery found themselves showing up in various ways soon thereafter. and in many ways have continued to impact the lives and communities of african-americans. >> the task force focus on the lingering effects of slavery in its 500 page interim report released last summer. it details 12 areas to be addressed, from the unjust legal system to housing

discrimination, separate and unequal education to racism in the environment, and infrastructure. of the dozen harms identified, it highlights policy changes to address seven areas and a combination of policy and cash payments to address the other five. dr. scott lewis oversaw the team of economists who have the tough task of crunching the numbers based on hard evidence. >> we are not giving people money, we are returning money's taken, returning money's stolen, returning money that had been lost based upon the kinds of this disenfranchisement. >> a black californian at least 71 years old that can trace their lineage back to an enslaved person can receive up to 1.2 million dollars in cash payments if the recommendations are voted into law by the legislature. that is $966,000 for health harms, $159,000 for mass incarceration and over policing,

and 148,000 dollars for housing discrimination. the work of the test force was not to conduct a feasibility study. no mention on how these payments would be funded. none of it comes to past unless the legislature agrees to adopt all or some of the groups recommendations. >> how feasible, how likely is it that the recommendations you put forward to the state legislature will come to be? >> we don't want our interim report or final report to collect dust. >> as word of the task force nears completion, the only nonblack member of the group says it will take californians of all walks of life to see reparations happen. >> certainly a matter of justice, a morality issue. because i'm japanese-american and we know something about being incarcerated, losing property. i think we have a duty basically to speak out. >> for the countless black californians who traveled the

state, closely watching the work of the task force, the time to act is now. >> my great-grandfather was a sharecropper who had 17 children and worked from sun up to sun down and died with absolutely nothing. they took his land and created laws to keep this land. >> what do you think he would say about being here today? making sure your voice is heard carrying on his legacy. >> i would hope proud enough that i stand on his shoulders and there are no better shoulders to stand on. >> julian glover, abc7 news. >> the meeting will take place at mills college. the final meeting will happen next month at the state capital. the landmark final report expected to be released to the public and state legislatures after that.

san francisco pride organizer dropped the ban as the anthem celebration. organizers are upset snyder opposes a tweet that he put out against undergoing gender reassignment surgery. on facebook he says he supports lgbtq rights, but transitioning should be done as an adult. in a statement he wrote kids don't have the mental capabilities to make rational, logical decisions about things of a magnitude that will affect them the rest of their lives. he said he's an ally to the transgender community, even if he disagrees with some viewpoints. san francisco pride said like any ally, we are glad he wants to continue learning about the issues that affect the transgender community." in the north bay, nevada fire teaming up with local agencies to prevent wildfires from causing excessive damage. this after the area experienced horrific wildfires. the plan is to build a massive safety zone or shaded break

around the city. it would be one of the largest wildfire prevention projects. the buffer zone would surround the flatlands and hills stretching 60 miles. >> we decreased spread of the fire, intensity, more time to evacuate, and we gave our firefighters an opportunity to put the fire out. >> work is currently underway around a hillside clearing flammable and non-native brush. the project expected to be completed within five years. partially funded through state and federal grants. in the south bay, silicon canceled its 2023 convention. the event made the announcement on its website citing unforeseen challenges. it also hinted at economic challenges but did not go into detail. organizers hope to bring it back to san jose at some point. anyone who bought a ticket for that event will get a refund. in the south bay, the game did not pump the brakes on

>> giants legend turned 92 years old today. he may not have the eyesight and mobility he had in his prime. but he's still very active. he coordinates business deals, overseas his foundation, and willie mays flowers program that supports underprivileged youth. he was featured in an hbo documentary. he had his number 24 retired by the mets and had youth feels enrichment dedicated to him. people setting off to explore san francisco and all of its charming stairs with the first ever stair challenge. volunteers mapped out a route for the scenic journey. anyone could run in it about a one hour walk. we met with a little celebration at the end.
