preparing the counter offer. >> for p.e. teachers it would be a class-size reduction. one p.e. teacher would get 2 students, which would be great if it was a personal training, class but that is not what our p.e. classes are. anser: the bargaining team that p.e. number should be for 428 students, not 2. time to analyze the work they are putting forward to us. anser: they have not met face-to-face since tuesday. the district did not return requests for comment but it did put out a statement saturday morning. it says that what is being offered is a historic $70 million for teachers' salaries. it also highlights concessions made on teacher workload. the deadlock is now over proposals. these are issues that go beyond classroom learning, issues such as environmental justice,

transportation, or student homelessness. the district argues these are greater societal issues, and they are not mandatory for negotiating. therefore, the district has not given authorization to its team to bargain on these points. >> we know that our working conditions are directly related to students' learning conditions. anser: but the union argues that common good is part of their comprehensive package. one example, california is investing heavily in cthe iosayi s,en on common good is about accountability. >> all of us have a voice and how that money is being used , and that can be very frightening to people in power. anser: the union says if there is no deal by sunday, they

strike on liz: new overnight, a man was stabbed at the b.a.r.t. station. police responded to a disturbance on a train at 9:30. they found a teenager stabbed a 59-year-old man in the back. the suspect is in jail this morning for your keep you posted on developments. at least one person is dead following a crash on the north livermore ramp on-ramp on 580. this happened after 9:00 last night. the california highway patrol says at least three vehicles were involved. one car slammed into a light pole. when is estelle -- witnesses tell abc 7 news that the cars may have been racing. tomorrow the suspect arrested in a string of stabbings and davis -- in davis will be in court for a preliminary hearing. carlos dominguez he pleaded not guilty on friday. police say he was a student at uc davis until last week when he was separated for academic reasons. dominquez is being held without

bond. the california reparations task force voted in oakland to approve recommendations for a final proposal to be delivered to state lawmakers this summer. the task force has studied and researched the negative impacts of slavery on its descendants for more than two years. the package includes restitution estimates for african americans living in california who have experienced housing discrimination, racial injustice, and more. african-americans with ancestors tied to slavery could receive cash payments. panelists say the time is now. >> i think it comes upon a time that we've got to be practitioners, we have to be social engineers, and make sure that we deliver something to this black population, or else we never will do it. liz: according to the report, an african-american resident over the age of 70 could receive payments up to $1.2 million. the final report will contain 95

recommendations for determining what reparations will look like in the future. state legislatures must pass all or some in july. oakland athletics tv announcer glenn has been suspended indefinitely for using a racial slur. the slur came during a pregame segment before the a's took on the royals. he made an apology. the a's made a statement, saying the language used by him was unacceptable. he has called play-by-play for the a's since 2006. check outside as the sun starts to come up. lisa: as we look live, you can see it looks pretty nice. that glassy bay from emeryville. temperatures right around 50 degrees with low 60's on the way. about five degrees to six degrees warmer in our inland valleys than what you will experience today in oakland. i will have your details for the rest of the bay area, next. liz: also ahead, a house party

a shooting at a house party left a girl dead and five others hurt. the suspect has not been arrested but there is no threat to the public. police believe the shooting was not random. police responded to the same party 30 minutes before that shooting, following reports of someone brandishing a gun at the party. that person was arrested and taken into custody. on the peninsula, hundreds of guns were turned in at an anonymous gun buyback in south san francisco. residents received $200 for each gun. over 200 were collected this weekend. nearly 2700 firearms have been removed from the community in the county's gun buyback program. another is scheduled. a family member is condemning caltrans after they decided to close off ramps during cinco de mayo celebrations this weekend. low riders and custom-built cars have been rolling through the city of san jose this weekend. san jose police and caltrans decided to close off ramps due

to increased crowds. a family member claims this is the only event where local agencies shut down off ramps. >> they are really hanging on to things that happened 20, 30 years ago, but ultimately, if that is the case, then that is very stereotypical and racist for them to think that because this is a holiday celebrating latinos, that, instinctively, there is going to be violence. liz: several off ramps are closed today from 4:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. today a newly constructed offramp is opened. a ribbon-cutting was held. drivers will notice a big change. the new ramp is off the far right lane of the lower deck. the former offramp, located on the far left lane, will remain open for several weeks to give people time to address. u.sa,d space museum is celebrating

history month with a ceremony. aapi community for their contributions to history. a special blessing was presented over the new addition by the buddhist church of oakland. thousands of people are converging on san francisco to watch high-tech sailboats racing at super high speeds. it is returning to the bay area for the third year at a time when local tourism officials say it is needed most. abc 7 news cornell barnard gives us a look. cornell: if you have a need, check out this adrenaline pumping sailboat race on the bay, known as sail gp, 50-foot catamarans fly across the water so close to shore. >> it is amazing to see.

these are hydro-foiling rocket ships that hit upwards of 60 miles per hour. cornell: sail gp is matching up nine teams from across the world. >> it is like the super bowl of our league. the stakes are very high, and the competition is at the highest level. >> this is one of the most knowledgeable cities for sailing and racing, so all of the teams love coming back here. and especially many who were here in america's cup, so, for many, it is a homecoming. cornell: thousands of spectators and sailing enthusiasts are coming to the marina green to watch. >> the commentary is excellent, the vibe is excellent. they are getting people into sailing, and into watching it. a really fun time for the sport. >> it is up and close. it is really fun. cornell: >> it comes at a crucial time when san francisco is trying to revive tourism post-pandemic. >> we have 25 percent of the visitors who come to san francisco. bisno -- business travel is down. events like this really make a

through the work week and into yesterday. as we look at the forecast headlines, partly cloudy today, more full sunshine throughout the afternoon, clouds increased, then shower chances return. to the north bay on monday. then we get into a breezy, sunny afternoon. major warm up in the week. it will take a week for it to get here, t be through with and the weak system by tortoday, thd then we are looking at the neck system, which will bring the threat of showers far to the north of us, bringing the clouds to the north bay come of peninsula, then the winds and a sunny afternoon. we will be looking at the clouds returning on tuesday, another weight system. but wednesday, look at this, where temperatures will be widespread 60's for many of us. low 70's inland and still some cool numbers at the coast. we begin to turn that around on thursday, as numbers come up through the 60's and the 70's,

looks for answers on a rooftop in the middle of san francisco. dan: in springtime, the living roof is alive with swaying grass and blooming flowers, but these days, the iconic dome in san francisco's golden gate park is also working overtime as a living laboratory. >> this is a bunch of bugs that have come into the top of the trap. dan: chris is a self-described "bug guy." the trap he is checking could help researchers better understand the evolution and biodiversity of insects. first, the insects captured in the trap are sent off to the lab, where teams will sequence their dna, a project funded by the california institute of biodiversity. >> we will do a lot of in-house genomic research on them here. so we are trying to build a dni -- dna library of californian insects. dan: says another set of

samples is being gathered to document species and biodiversity in insects around the globe. >> we are one of 81 sites around the world to doing the same kind of monitoring protocol. so we are going to be having a really comprehensive data set from all of these global, remote locations that will be able to be compared for generations to come. >> they need to crawl down into the tube in order to get the nectar. dan: and it is an interesting time to study bugs. it is also a fascinating year to study their ecosystem, including plants and flowers. the current super blooms popping up around california are part of a complicated and diverse environment. >> the cool thing about super blooms is that we will see some species explode, whereas other species will not bloom as bigor. and have pportunityinatordan: sn

saw sparks flying like it was right in front of us. we ran into the converse store. we all hunkered down in the back. liz: now at 6:30, witnesses described the terrifying moments a man entered a mall and started shooting. what we are learning about another mass shooting in allen, -- another mass shooting, this time in allen, texas. good morning. we'll get to the latest on that shooting in a moment, but first let's start with the forecast. it is looking nice. lisa: it is. looking at a very pretty picture here from emeryville where current numbers are in the upper 40's in san francisco, 52 san jose, palo alto checking it at 53, and gorgeous here,'s 42 santa rosa as well as novato 45, livermore, 50 degrees, a much colder morning, 12 degrees colder. we will make up the difference this afternoon, but you can see how the clouds scatter out as we get toward 10:00, 11:00, and by

1:00, widespread 50's, upper 60's along the coastline, so it will be chilly. as degrees coming into play, s'd with low to mid 50's bayshore. the clouds want to increase overnight tonight. we could see a return to some showers for parts of the bay area early monday. i will explain and talk about a major warm-up headed our way in the week ahead in a few minutes. liz? liz: thank you. impacts of a day of shopping turned into a scary situation in texas, after a gun man opened fire in a mall, killing nine people and hurting several others. dozens of shoppers were forced to evacuate moments after officers arrived. this morning, we know the gunman is one of the nine people who are dead. a reporter talks to witnesses about what they heard as they ran for their lives. >> the sound of gunfire disrupting a peaceful day outside of a shopping outlet in

outside of dallas, texas on saturday afternoon. the shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. local time. >> our officer at allen premium outlets was out on an unrelated call. he heard gunshots. he located the gunshot. he located the shooter. he neutralized the shooter. we believe at this point that the shooter acted alone. >> the outdoor shopping area, packed with hundreds of shoppers on what was a sunny, warm day. cole was there with his mother when he heard the shooting. >> there was this guy dressed in all black, wearing a vest, has an assault rifle, and he is just shooting at people. >> romero was there as well and saw some of the victims. >> we saw people injured some , were dead. bodies. the shooter kept all the way around, five, 10 stores, he keeps shooting. >> many shoppers say they ran inside stores to hide. >> pop, pop, pop, pop,

and we saw sparks flying. it was right in front of us. we ran into the converse store. they locked the door. we all hunkered down in the back. >> we are going out, we are going out. i had to go back to the front and locked the door. that is when i saw cops all coming in, helicopters were coming in. >> multiple agencies responded, including the fbi and atf. police officers escorted shoppers to safety, many seen walking with their hands above their heads. melissa, abc news, allen, tex as. liz: people in new york are protesting and demanding justice for jordan neely, the 38-year-old who died after being put in a chokehold on a subway train. demonstrators poured into the subway station. this comes as the attorney for the marine veteran issued a statement expressing condolences over the "awful tragedy." a grand jury could be convened

this week to hear evidence in the case. it has been a worrisome week leading up to this weekend's kentucky derby with several competing horses now dead. authorities at churchill downs said two more horses slated for the races yesterday suffered crippling leg injuries, forcing veterinarians to euthanize the animals. churchill downs says it was working with regulators to investigate. yesterday brought royal moments 70 years in the making. celebrations will continue today, following the coronation of king charles iii and queen camilla. >> this morning, the u.k. is gearing up for a big celebration. >> was in the life, you know, it is magical. >> seeing royalty was just the tv. experiencing it in real life is quite a big deal for me. >> members of the public are encouraged to take part in

abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has a look. cornell: for the past week, these firefighter recruits have been working to reduce the risk of fire across marin county by removing dead trees and brush. we caught up with this crew from the fire foundry last summer, a program committed to advance equity and firefighter safety. >> we have got this fire problem across the entire state that we are trying to solve. we are also trying to bring more women and people of color into the fire service. cornell: kessler is a new firefighting recruit. hoping for a firefighting career. >> it combines a few of my passions, helping people, racial justice, and also kind of helping break cycles of poverty throughout marin county and beyond. cornell: the program, which offers paid on-the-job training, is now expanding. marin county fire is teaming up with the college of marin campus, close to where they take emt and fire science klausutis. -- classes.
