and did we mention, it really, really sticks? salonpas, it's good medicine. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. of oakland today. it filed for the roman catholic diocese of today had filed for a chapter 11 bankruptcy in the wake of more than 300 lawsuits alleging child sex abuse. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. ama: and i'm ama daetz. it is allowing decades-old cases to be reopened, and it could be settlements for abuse. dan: abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard spoke with people about action in a move to confront 330 lawsuits

confront lawsuits over the alleged sexual abuse of children by clergy members. bishop michael barber road we may be filing because we believe this process is the best way to support a compassionate and equitable outcome for survivors of abuse while ensuring we continue to provide the essential services and support so crucial to our parishioners and communities. the diocese says it will continue to operate. its employees and vendors will continue to be paid. attorney spencer lucas represents 50 survivors. he calls the bankruptcy filing a historic day for his clients. spencer: we look forward to this being an opportunity for us to help our clients again accountability and opposition in the bankruptcy process. cornell: most of the lawsuits, which were filed between 2019 and 2022, involved allegations of abuse that date back to the 1960's through 1980's. sherry water work is a survivor who is skeptical about receiving anything from the diocese post

chapter 11. sherry: when i was a child in the 1970's, so i hope they will come to the table and be honest. cornell: joey says he believes the filing may prevent other survivors like him from coming forward. joey: now that the state legislature has allowed some of the victims to come forward to seek compensation, the diocese is filing bankruptcy, and they want you to feel sorry for them. cornell: chapter 11 comes at a time when diocese nationwide are facing a challenge of declining attendance among catholics and fewer priests. mass attendance dropped from 2019 due to the pandemic, down 46% and a five-year average. in 2021, the bishop organized a mission alignment process to address is declining population and 82 parishes, some of which considered underutilized admin well, some are calling for mark on ability from the church

during the bankruptcy process. jail free card, by any stretch, so through the bankruptcy plan, the diocese will be forced to put out significant compensation, and we hope that the diocese will be transparent and disclose not only all of their assets and financial information but almost more importantly, how these estates, -- mistakes on behalf of these children were made. cornell: in oakland, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. ama: this comes almost too much after another catholic diocese filed for bankruptcy. the i'team's dan following this since march. more than 200 survivors of child sex abuse by priests. the bay area catholic community is mourning the loss of long serving bishop emeritus pj mcgrath, who served in both san francisco and san jose. in san jose, they say they were

blessed by his ministry for 20 years until 2019. mcgrath passed away yesterday, just one day after entering hospice care. he had previously been battling pneumonia. funeral arrangements will soon be released. continues for a third day today, although there appeared to be progress with negotiations lasting into the early hours this morning. they seem to be close to an agreement on teacher compensation, but the real speedbump here is a set of so-called common good issues that the union wants to seriously discuss, and the district seems to want to avoid. this word cloud shows some of the items, things like reparations for black students and shared governance, which means they will be more people beyond the district involved in making decisions about schools. district has maintained that as important as these common good items are, they are societal issues that are challenging to address in a labor contract. abc 7 news repor h

e test :eaers marching through the streets of oakland as they push for not only better pay and working conditions but also common good goals, something the teachers' union says t promised on after meeting with negotiators around 2:00 in the morning on monday. >> we have big items on the table, special education, salary, and common good. they have been telling us all week that they can't bargain common good, and last night, we broke through, and they said they can bargain an mou. understanding means the district has agreed to consider common good items. it is progress he says it's still not enough to strike a deal. >> negotiators of common good goals really is what has to be done. >> fighting for what their students need is just as important as their compensation. lena: meanwhile, cap of the school board, including former teacher, jennifer is pushing for

the same common good goals, such as housing for homeless students and families, reparations, and shared governance, issues she experienced firsthand in the classroom for jennifer: on house youth -- in the classroom. jennifer: un housed youth. these are issues that matter to the district. lena: school board president mike hutchinson is calling on the union to return to the bargaining table and says while they agree on the principles of common good goals, they do not belong in the contract. >> items that are outside of the scope of the contract, which are basically work conditions, are not going to be negotiated. many of the items that i see listed as common good are things we already have policies and directions for within the district, or many items that are

not constrained -- contained within the contract, such as mental health services. lena: teachers are poised to return to the picket line for day for come -- four tuesday. in oakland, lena howland, abc 7 news. dan: some ous together. it is happening at future star baseball batting cages in oakland. the owner says the pitch came during the last big teacher strike. >> there was a strike in 2019 where i did not think about it, and then after five days, i was like oh, i should do a strike camp. i put the camp together, and then it fell through. so this time, i kind of did it a day or two before. dan: 40 students are registered to play ball, with more on the waitlist. strike camp is set to continue until a deal is reached between the school deserved and teachers union. ama: childcare providers across the state and right here in the

bay area rallied today. they are calling for federal and local governments to provide living wages to childcare providers and affordability to families. abc 7 news reporter zach fuentes was at one of the rallies and has more. zach: the cost of childcare continues to be a burden for parents across the country, especially in the bay area. >> no one can afford $29,000 per year per child for daycare. it is ridiculous. >> paul my income would go to daycare. zach: janel adams was born and raised in san jose, currently working for the city. she says she wants to stay here, but the cost of childcare drove her out. >> my mother graciously offered to quit her job to watch my kids. zach: monday, a national day to recognize will childcare providers united, took part across the state to recognize, including alameda and santa clara counties. >> we have families and children that need help when it comes to these issues. zach: with city budget

discussions starting this week, san jose members say they want mayor matt mahan and to support childcare for her they have support councilmember peter ortiz. >> we should not be eliminating programs that help improve and reopen childcare businesses. zach: mahan says well childcare is needed, funds are limited to he's at the focus needs to be on public safety and the homelessness crisis. >> we need a robust marketplace where we can help with childcare services, streamlined permitting, help with sites, particularly in for housing childcare services, but we cannot continue to live with this fallacy that we can always say yes to everything and take on more and more responsibilities. zach: at the state level, the assembly unveiled the childcare fairly funding on monday -- friendly funding on monday. state budget deadline is june 15

spencer: new developments -- dan: new development, a former richmond police officer has been sentenced to two years of probation, after drunkenly firing shots at the four seasons at san francisco hotel in 2017. d.a. brooke jenkins says the ex sergeant, philip sanchez, was found in oregon bar, carrying a concealed firearm in december. that violated some of the terms of a 2021 deal he struck with the judge after the four seasons incident. in 2017, police rushed to market street hotel after sanchez fired shots several times in the guestroom. he surrendered peacefully without anyone being hurt. ama: abc 7's commitment to building a better bay area has a commitment to social justice. there has been a big assessment over -- discussion over reparations. a final proposal is one step

closer to being voted on by the state lawmakers. suzanne phan has more. suzanne: huge, in-store day. chris of the coalition for a just and equitable california says it is a big moment in a long fight, after two years of intense discussion and research, the california reparations task force approved its recommendations. >> to recommend that the state pay reparations in the form of direct compensation and payments to the descendants of those who were free or enslaved and living here. suzanne: with ancestors who are slaves could receive cash payments. the task force, with the help of economists, look at how much compensation is due and who would be eligible to get it. according to the report, estimated reparations could total up to more than $1 million, depending on the

person's age and how long they lived in california. the final report will 95 recommendations for determining what reparations will look like in the future. allie whitehorse -- whitehurst is with naacp oakland. allie: systemic changes that will impact in a positive way the lives of the descendants of african enslaved people in america. suzanne: the final report is due to state lawmakers at the end of june. what is next? >> next, we take this to the state legislature. we take it to the state assembly, the governor. suzanne: congresswoman barbara lee is cosponsoring a bill in congress to study restitution proposal for african-americans. she released this statement today, quote "it is critical that the promise made to a ancestors years ago is kept and that truth telling is carried out. i'm encouraged by this next step

coastline. your morning temperatures will be in the 40's and the 50's. you are looking at a mostly cloudy start tomorrow afternoon, looking at upper 50's to low 70's, so it is going to be milder, especially inland, breezy along the coastline, just like today. fast forward to wednesday, temperatures are not going to change a whole lot, but by thursday, we are changing -- turning up the heat a bit. 70's inland, and by friday, mid 80's inland. a look at the accuweather 7-day forecast shows temperatures trending higher toward the end of the work week. you will notice mid 80's to low 90's, summerlike heat. . so if you have mother's day plans this weekend, plan accordingly. mid-60's to low 90's on sunday, then cooler and cloudier for your monday. just throwing this out, one computer model is hinting at possible showers and thunderstorms early next week. i know, it is crazy.
