preparing to go back on the picket line for a fourth day as the union in oakland unified keeps negotiating a new contract. one of the main sticking points is the so-called common good goals. amanda is live with why these are so important to teachers and to some community members. >> reached and as you mentioned, that added debate about what is really being considered when it comes to these goals. of course, we also mentioned these are items that are outside of teacher pay which we have explained involved to for homeless students, reparations for black students, and shared governance. the last issue would allow more people beyond the district in decision-making about schools. but the district has not publicly confirmed it is negotiating these items. the union says they are even

attributing bennett elements to the demonstrations. labor experts saying a chicago teachers union first question for broader demand in addition to teacher pay to benefit students and communities. it is something los angeles teachers also recently pushed for. still, mike hutchinson says while the board agrees on the principles of common good goals, he may time -- maintains the items don't belong in the contract. >> many of the items i've seen listed as common good are things we already have policies and directions for, or they are many items contained within the contract. >> is a great example. here trying to develop these schools and l.a. and oakland have talk together about the community schools model. community schools actually allow more parent input, more community input than

schools. >> at this point, no word on whether district or union negotiators are back at the table. the union president said they were at it until after 2:00 a.m. yesterday morning and we didst eat with him yesterday when he characterized development as a step forward for both union and the district. still, teachers will be back out picketing this morning at 7:30. we've been seeing teachers arrive as early as 4:45 and that has been the case so far the last ultra days of the strike. -- four kumasi: look at this. some students have taken part in straight camp. star baseball batting cages. it came during the last big teachers strike.

was sold to jpmorgan chase. the wall street journal reported executives in the bank sold $11.8 million of stock between january and march. at this point, it is not clear which are under investigation. reggie: president biden is said to be congressional leaders at the white house in an effort to break a stalemate over the debt ceiling. this comes as the deadline to avoid default thing is getting close. jobina: the stalemate is critical right now. what we are seeing here is that treasury secretary janet yellen has warned u.s. could run out of money as soon as june 1 if no deal is made to raise the debt ceiling. that could lead to a worldwide economic disaster including the loss of millions of jobs in the u.s. president biden and democrats have pushed to raise the debt ceiling with no spending changes and have been pushing for spending cuts before they agreed to raise the debt ceiling. >> i think in the end if we are

coming to the deadline and they are still at an impasse, my guess is that they will find a way to extend the time limit. jobina: the meeting today is expected to include the president, house speaker kevin mccarthy, house democratic leader hakeem jeffries and senators chuck schumer and mitch mcconnell. republicans took similar positions on raising the debt ceiling in 2011 82013 under president obama. they did not make similar demands to raise the debt ceiling when they controlled congress and president trump was in office. kumasi: thank you. the u.s. is set to announce a 1.2 billion dollars military aid package to ukraine as early as today. a u.s. official familiar with the plan tells cnn that it will include drones, artillery ammunition, and air defense missiles. with the new package, the u.s. will have committed moreha three $7ilon in milita aid to ukraine since the beginning of the biden administration.

san francisco mayor london breed is in israel for a week long trip celebrating the 50th anniversary of san francisco's sister city relationship. her office set the goal is to create economic relationships, exchange ideas and foster a cultural connection abroad. she is planning to meet with israeli leaders and executives from bioscience companies. private donors are funding the trip. she will also visit tel aviv, jerusalem, and --. drew: sparkling in san francisco. good visibility. we do have some mid to high-level clouds above this morning and we will share the skies with that sunshay should be a pretty nice day. along with satellite, we do have an upper level low spinning off the coast and moving in, adding those high clouds to the sky this morning.

relation to the disproportionate rates of fentanyl death among black san franciscans. according to the department, black people in san francisco have an overdose death rate that is five times higher than the citywide rate. reggie: california lawmakers

have advanced four of seven proposal on the table to address the fentanyl crisis. bills passed by the assembly public safety committee yesterday include creating a statewide fentanyl task worse. an effort to fast-track three other bills that would create harsher punishment for drug dealers failed. some democrats have said they are resistant to proposals that increase penalties for dealers, pointing to the failed war on drugs from the 80's and 90's. a southbay mom wants to share her daughter's struggle with opioid in hopes of saving lives. >> i think a lot of in denial, not my child. and i'm here to tell you that it could be your child. >> marlene's dghter chloe died from an accidental overdose on april 27, 2022. she was 18 years old. >> she was on life support for three days and it was determined that chloe had sustained

severe brain injury from lack of oxygen. >> she was born and raised in los gatos. her money's -- mother says she was funny and caring. she had a passion for saving animals. when she was 12 years old, the unexpected death of her father hit her hard, so she tried to numb the pain. >> she started self-medicating with marijuana and that progress to prescription pills that she obtained with her friends from parents from unlocked medicine cabinets. >> she started taking xanax an eventually became addicted to percocet. by 15, she was getting prescription drugs online. >> through social media, instagram, snapchat. it was really easy for her to get. these drug dealers even delivered to our home. >> she left her counseling, a drug treatment program three times and occasionally got her phone taken away. despite the efforts, she found a way. >> lots of times, people that

reggie:reggie: for a fourth day, oakland teachers will be on the picket line. the teachers union and district have made some progress but have not yet reached an agreement on a contract. kumasi: the catholic diocese of oakland has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. this is coming as the diocese faces 330 lawsuits claiming sexual abuse by priests. reggie: president biden is meeting with top republicans and democrats from congress to try to resolve a standoff over the debt ceiling. if nothing is done, the u.s. could default as soon as next month, setting off an economic crisis. drew: number five, expect a pleasant afternoon. dry skies, partly cloudy conditions. temperatures are a bit below average once again, but still quite nice. kumasi: number six, the biggest issue we are following right now we just mentioned a few moments ago is going to be a crash. it is going to be on westbound 80 to eastbound 580.

brooke thinking to release video footage showing the killing of brown. late last month, a security guard shot and killed brown in an incident at a walgreens on market street. so far, understands the need for transparency, the investigation is ongoing and a final decision on charges has not been made. jenkins says that releasing any evidence before the investigation finishes is unethical and could compromise her work. legal analyst stephon clark said the videos may not hold all the answers. >> the careful to point out that this decision on self-defense wasn't made just on the video, but rather the security guard state of mind at the time. he used deadly force. >> protesters say they will continue to advocate for that venue to be released. the board of supervisors meeting is scheduled for 2:00 this

afternoon. they will vote on a resolution to urge the d.a. to release video and other evidence related to brown death. kumasi: thank you, gloria. antioch is taking a new approach to respond to certain types of calls for help. a new community team would be responding to domestic incidents of people who are having a mental health crisis. the goal is to de-escalate situations and ultimately save lives. the program is in honor of angela pinto who died while in police custody. his family says he was having a mental health episode. >> it means that angelo's death was not in vain. because i believe that if this program had been working in december 2020, i don't think angelo would have died. kumasi: all of this is happening at the investigation into alleged police misconduct and racist texting scandal continues. some officers are still unpaid administered of leave. city officials say the team

would relieve stress on the department. reggie: still no deal between oakland unified and the teachers union. that means thousand educators will meet back on the picket lines today. amanda is live with what we know about the negotiations and what is now being asked for. amanda: the teachers president characterized this weekend's developments as a step in the right direction for both union and district negotiators. but this morning, renewed debate over those common good proposals. but the oakland unified school district, they have not publicly confirmed they are negotiating these common good items. issues outside of teacher pay, we've mentioned, involve help for homeless students, reparations for black students and shared governance. last topic would ultimately allow more people beyond the district in decision-making about schools.

the unions at the district got the authorization over the weekend, even attributing the development to the days-long demonstrations. still, school board president mike hutchinson says while the board agrees on the principles of common good goals, he maintains the items don't belong in the contract. but the vortices split as we have since heard from half of its members supporting those common good goals. >> i know that all of these issues in the common good goals, i saw in the classroom. many of my students were on house. many of my students needed mental health services. these are things that matter to our students and to their education. >> one of the things that chicago's teachers union won a decade ago was resources to support homeless students. one of the demands we see from the oakland education association this time around is that the school district used

surplus land to allow nonprofits to build housing to house homeless students and their families. from a labor expert referencing a chicago teachers union. they were the first to push for broader demands, these common good issues in addition to teacher pay to benefit and communities. that is something los angeles teachers also fought for recently. for now, here in oakland, it is day four of the teachers strike and we are back out live. we know the teachers will be out at 7:30 this morning. kumasi: thank you, amanda. the hollywood writers strike is now in day eight with no end in sight. the impact is now being felt in more areas of the industry. producers with deals to develop new shows for specific companies are starting to get notices that their services are being suspended. the writers guild of america is asking for better pay, streaming residuals and protection against

artificial intelligence using their work. writers say they are struggling to survive. >> there's no mid-level jobs anymore, so you are constantly worrying about how to care for your children. you never know what to do for child care. it's just very unstable, very uncertain. kumasi: the wga has vowed to stay on strike for as long as it takes. more shows have halted production including filming of the final season of "stranger things, the mtv movie and mtv awards. reggie: a little-known waterway in unincorporated nevada is set to be renamed. former marine county park ranger michael warner says black john slough was named after john pinkston, one of the first black settlers in 1840. warner says it doesn't seem right that he was being called out for his race when no other local settler was. >> it's very much a name that

was bestowed upon him, most likely not a name that he chose for himself. petition to the geographical survey asking to rename it. last month officials agreed to change the name to pinkston slough. he hopes it causes others to look critically at things around them and take action for positive change. city leaders are launching a new campaign aimed at reducing traffic deaths. this will include billboards and signs that remain -- remind drivers to slow down. last year there were 65 traffic deaths in san jose. one third of them were caused by speeding vehicles. >> the most important thing we can each do is make the conscious decision to be safer drivers. speeding can save a minute. slowing down can save a life. reggie: the campaign will also come with additional traffic enforcement. the city is also adding protective bike lanes and

redesigning sidewalks so they are safer to cross. reggie: new details on the future of highway 37, the california transportation commission is set to vote next week on whether to convert orson of the highway to a toll road. this would be the first tollroad in the bay area. currently, only bridges charge tolls for everyone to cross. if approved, tolls would begin on the 12 mile stretch of 2027. they could be anywhere from seven dollars to eight dollars, kind of like a bridge toll. the money would be used to widen the highway and protected from sea level rise. reggie: two professional skiers are sharing a harrowing story of surviving two spring avalanches. here's trevor ault. >> avalanche survi >> i was extremely scared and shaken up. >> a stunning video, swallowed up by snow. connor was skiing on king solomon mountain when an
