>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. dan: local and federal investigators are on the scene tonight of what appears to be major break in a homicide case that has gone unsolved for three decades. thank you for joining us. ama: from a missing persons case. dan: that case is of ylva hagner, a woman who went missing in 1996. we have team coverage of this starting with ryan curry. ama: he joins us live in redwood city where the search continues now. ryan: good aftern wereere at this wchrds sa i a ls

for a man named thomas pressberger. he works at the ames research center is a computer scientist and he's involved in this investigation. moments ago, authorities brought in search dogs and other digging equipment to the house in the backyard to collect new evidence. sky 7 flying over this home in redwood city wednesday. it shows investigators removing -- removing bricks in the backyard. authorities are searching a home and a park down the street. they say the search is about ylva hagner, a palo alto woman who went missing in 1996. the case went cold but in the past year, investigators started looking back into the case. >> a missing persons case like this, near and dear to our hearts. we have recently started looking back into it and that is what brought us out here. ryan: investigators used a radar to scan a section of the

backyard. shortly after, they started bringing shovels and other digging equipment. >> hopefully, they find something and figure it out. ryan: annie says the neighborhood has been high alert all day. she says this area is usually quiet, but says all neighbors have been shocked to hear the searches about a nearly three decade long cold case. >> everyone always says you cannot believe it happens in your own backyard but you know it does. hopefully they can bring closure to the families. ryan: belmont police expect this urge to go on for all of wednesday and possibly the rest of the week. >> it is tough to tell but i would expect at least through the end of the day or tomorrow at some point. we are hoping to get some more details in the next 48 hours. ryan: the search is isolated just with those two areas, this home behind me and the park that is down the street. ago, authorities grabbed a bunch of shovels and other

digging equipment, headed back into the house to resume what is believed to be the search for more evidence in that backyard. ryan curry, abc 7 news. ama: thank you. dan: melanie woodrow continues our team coverage. ama: she's in the newsroom with more on the history of this nearly 30-year-old unsolved mystery. melanie: family and friends searching for answers along with law enforcement for nearly 30 years. perhaps today they are closer to they have ever been. >> i just want to say come home, ylva. melanie: her brother pleading for her return in 1996. the 42-year-old went missing october 14 of that year. she was last seen at work in belmont. her car was found in nearby san carlos four days later. the father arrived in california from spain. >> we have no traces of her. we have the sense to

from her personality, that she has not left her workplace by free will. melanie: investigators searched twin pines park but the search turned up nothing. >> we have nothing to show that she was kidnapped. we can't find any signs of a struggle, anything like that. so, all we can say at this point is it is a disappearance under extremely suspicious circumstances. melanie: in 1997, investigators also searched this area in palo alto hills where in acquittance or possibly former boyfriend lived. now, investigators are looking decades later in an attempt to provide long-awaited answers to her family's question. what happened to ylva? investigators have said they started looking back into this e sear is asbeyo t woodrow, dan: at least two robbery

suspects are still on the loose tonight following a high-speed chase that ended in a crash not far from lake merritt. it started in vallejo and went into oakland with the suspect speeding down interstate 580, and then exiting onto surface streets. sky 7 caught several close calls, including a couple of pedestrians nearly getting hit, blowing through intersections. we streamed this as it happened. the suspects crashed at 14th and madison streets. two got out through the driver side and took off running. there were last spotted near 11th and jackson street but they escaped. ama: now to the oakland teachers strike. ousd has canceled the school board meeting for tonight. state superintendent of public instruction tony thurman sat down with us to discuss the progress of the bargaining table. >>

teachers strike, but negotiators say progress is being made. >> there has been some progress. i don't want to minimize it, but for a full package, we have ways to go. >> she is one of the chief negotiators for the union representing teachers. she says both sides have agreed on more pay for substitute teachers, more prep time for new teachers, codify class-size and adding more counselors. but issues remain including the pay schedule for teachers. >> under our proposal, we would collapse that. so, basically, you would start to approach max pay at year 20. under the district we proposal, you regress on this e salary schedule. >> in an email, the district addressed common good proposals but the sides are deadlocked. the district is negotiating all mandatory issues of the cba.

to the extent something within oea's proposal is a mandatory subject, that is included. >> a lot of times, revenue coming from the state is one time. it is difficult to offset those declining enrollments, which means less revenue for districts. >> the california state superintendent of public instruction has been mediating negotiations since the weekend. he describes the meetings as productive, focused on tough issues. these proposals touch on issues outside of the classroom, such as school safety or environmental justice. >> i think everyone would agree those are important. a lot of the state money is one time money. so, district are always trying to balance their ability to fund the programs that they commit to. >> since 2019, more and more unions across california are adding common good proposals to the contract negotiations. oakland is no different.

the union be limits to funding. she argues those details can all be negotiated at the bargaining table. >> if funding changes, we can bargain over it and we make changes accordingly. we can do the same. dan: cleanup and clo continue in martinez today after more mercury was discovered outside an amtrak station. a tip today from a resident led a hazmat team to an additional contaminated area. officials say a garbage truck with a contaminated trashcan at amtrak station was responsible for spilling this stuff. cleanup is expected to continue tomorrow. ama: it is do or die time for the warriors. the champ target a 3-1 hole against the lakers. dan: a loss tonight and the season is over. chris alvarez is live at chase center for game five. chris: i will keep it positive. a win tonight and the season

continues. the warriors looking to keep this thing going against the lakers in the western conference semis. a lot of pregame action going on right now. donte to my side. moses moody is on the court. anthony davis as well for the lakers. this is the third time in the steve kerr era that the warriors have faced a 3-1 deficit. in 2016, they came back to beat the thunder in the western conference finals but then they lost against toronto. being down 3-1 is a daunting task but if you can keep it simple and win tonight, you put all the pressure on the lakers to close out their series at home on friday. >> as you let go of the last one, you get ready for the next one. you remind yourself how lucky you are to have the opportunity and be playing in the nba playoffs, coaching in the nba playoffs. we have an incredible opportunity. >> it's playoff basketball.

ama: the san jose mayor is throwing his support behind an effort to install speed cameras in his city and five others in california after similar efforts have failed to make it through the state government in the past. dustin dorsey shows us how the program would work and why he is convinced it will save lives. dustin: today, san jose's maria hernandez won't be able to celebrate her mother. five months ago, the community activists life was taken in a deadly car crash. now her daughter is calling for safer city streets. >> when we see things that are repetitive like this, when it is not just one fatality but multiple on the same street, if that is not screaming for a change, then i don't know what

is. dustin: today, the mayor and city leaders voiced their support for what they say is a step towards that change. assembly bill 645 would allow six california cities to install speed cameras as part of a pilot program running until 2032 to help slow drivers down. >> these speed safety cameras have been shown in studies across the country and around the world -- they are deployed in over 150 communities around the u.s. they have been shown to reduce crashes by over 50% on average, 54% to be exact. dustin: we cameras with the pictures of the car's back license plate and send finds to drivers breaking the speed limit by 11 miles per hour or up. privacy still has concerns. >> when the location of the car is recorded over and over again over the course of a day, it is sort of like having someone tailing your car.

it is not just one location at one moment in time. it is really the pattern of your movements. dustin: she would like to see investments another speed slowing measures and not a camera program that is proven to be unpopular in other states. but the city believes that can be part of the enforcement and education in san jose that helps saves lives. >> we are all here today to find solutions to keep our communities safe. this technology is one of those type of solutions. dustin: the cameras would likely rollout in 2024 inf passed. dan: two student groups at san jose state university rallied today in support of affordable housing. protesters are upset that the mayor wants to reallocate funding that was authorized when voters approved a ballot measure e in 2020. the san jose spotlight news website says they want to spend half the money on a mental health facility and homeless services. the student groups say

affordable housing is one solution to the growing homeless crisis. >> as of today, we've had 69 people that have died that are homeless on the streets of san jose. so, we are well on target to beat last year's number and that is a big concern. dan: the groups also want legal representation for people facing eviction and an end to sweeps of homeless encampments. ama: the illness that sparked quite a bit of fear for several months last year still is not completely gone. dan: the events coming up in the bay area assigned to combat monkeypox.
