>> building a better bayons. this is abc7news. dan: wow. the dubs survive with their backs against the wall. the warriors deliver when and live to fight another game. there are plenty of questions going into friday night. good evening and thank you for joining us. ama: we do want to start with a cold case that seems to have been unlocked on the peninsula. dan: a woman who disappeared in belmont back in 1996. a home in redwood city has been getting torn apart. ama: j.r. stone has been at the scene now drawing in the fbi. >> you are looking at all new video showing putting evidence bags into the back of the patrol car, a dozen of those bags were taken away after a full day of model -- fbi personnel digging in the backyard of her redwood city home on farmville boulevard. investigators telling us they are working a cold case

involving the 1996 disappearance of --. clicks they were going back and forth to the forensic truck and coroners truck to get supplies to bring stuff to the back. reporter: neighbors watching all day. sky 7 flying above as those with the fbi could be seen digging in the backyard, then sifting through the dirt. records show the home belongs to thomas press berger and nasa confirms that he works at a research center as a computer scientist and is involved in this investigation. in 1996, investigators struggled with this case. >> we have nothing to show that she was kidnapped and we camped xi -- find any signs of a struggle. so all we can say at is that it's a disappearance under extremely suspicious circumstances. reporter: hog no worked at a company in beaumont. the car was found in san carlos four days after she was last

seen. her father even traveling to the area from spain at the time, making a plea to the public. >> we have no traces of her. i want to say, come home. reporter: a nearby park was also searched wednesday. neighbors say seeing images of the fbi on this property reminded them of the construction work that was done in another section of this backyard around five years ago. >> i think there was a tractor or something that came in and they were pouring concrete for the retaining wall. the construction went on for about a month. workers in and out of that area. reporter: neighbors described those living here. >> they are one of those quiet neighbors. they keep to themselves. >> somewhat friendly. very private. reporter: fbi and police have left this home and officers telling me they are done at this location. as to what was found inside those evidence bags, it's unclear. officers also telling me they

the nerves from neighbors tonight. >> it's a big deal. there's nothing more important than your health. reporter: hazmat crews continue to clean up a mercury spill. mercury was first discovered near a garbage can outside of the towns amtrak station monday. on tuesday, health officials found traces of mercury on several roads surrounding the train station after a truck picked up the trashcan. on wednesday, more traces found along another road leading up to rankin park. >> maybe i need to get rid of the shoes or have them tested. what do i do? reporter: the mercury levels found outside are in extremely low risk to people's health. while small levels of mercury were found on the road, the sidewalks in the area are safe to walk on. the main worry was those who might've stepped in the initial puddle near the amtrak station monday and tracked it into their homes. once inside, high levels of mercury can create serious risk. >> i am concerned about martinez and our health.

and what's being done to protect us from horrible contamination. reporter: stephanie runs a local kids camp. she says several people she works with have worries. >> i had parents call me concerned that our road would be closed to camp. they were really concerned about contamination. reporter: beside me, the streets of martinez are quiet on wednesday night. some residents are avoiding the downtown area until the mercury is cleaned up. that includes carissa. she says since she moved to towns a couple years ago, her family has experienced to health hazards. first the martinez refinery release of ash into the air last thanksgiving and now the mercury. >> now i'm worried that we can't walk our child through the amtrak to go to the park. reporter: police are still investigating where the mercury came from. tim johns, abc7news. ama: it's the high-speed police

chase that caught tons of attention in the east bay. two suspects flying in and out of intersections, barely dodging pedestrians. dan: there were plenty of close calls, all seen from above. ama: that's one of the bay area stories making headlines this wednesday. the run after a high-speed chase that ended with a crash not far from lake merritt. it started in vallejo and went into oakland with the suspect speeding down fight av. -- 580. there was a close call as the car went whizzing past a couple of pedestrians. the suspects crashed at 14th and madison street and they got out through the driver side and took off running. dan: the state attorney general is launching a civil rights investigation into the antioch police department. a racist text message scandal has rocked the department and resulted in multiple officers being put on the. bonta says the department of justice will look into the text

messages and will investigate claims of excessive force. >> i join my fellow senators and welcoming back our dear friend and esteemed colleague dan fence time. ama: dianne feinstein return to the senate and cast her first vote in nearly three months after battling shingles. she's taking on a lighter schedule and distal facing calls to resign. dan: as the oakland teacher strike is about to enter it six day, the school district is responding to the oakland education association, good proposal. the district says there are serious financial problems if it implements the entire proposal because it would cost more than $1 billion. >> everyone would agree, those are important. a lot of the money is one-time money. district's are always trying to balance their ability to fund the programs that they commit to. dan: the state superintendent is mediating the negotiations. ama: a new museum dedicated to the thousands of chinese

u.s. mexico border. the title to -- 42 immigration policy is set to expire in hours. the influx is already underway. annabelle munoz from k abc is on the ground in san ysidro along california's border with what we are seeing tonight. reporter: for the last three years, tijuana is where an increasing number of refugees and asylum-seekers have been forced to wait as u.s. immigration policies largely halted access to asylum. thursday, title 42 immigration authorities to turn away people seeking asylum and it comes to an end. >> we are clear eyed about the challenges we are likely to face in the days and weeks ahead. they have the potential to be very difficult. our plan will deliver results but it will take time for those results to be fully realized. it's essential that we all take this into account. reporter: the biden

administration is set to implement new measures. some will speed up the processing of people seeking asylum and deportations. among the announced measures, abstentions, individuals who cross into the u.s. without authorization will be assumed ineligible for asylum. if removed will face at least a five year bar. human rights groups are gearing up to legally challenge these measures and monitor what will happen on the ground. >> our primary concern is that asylum-seekers will be turned away at the port of entry in violation of u.s. federal and international law. reporter: the administration plans to open 100 processing centers in different countries which would direct people to pathways to enter the u.s., canada, or spain. it will increase access to the cbp one app which has proven to be an insurmountable challenge for the vast majority of those seeking asylum. annabelle munoz, abc7news. >> for everyone -- ama: google is giving us plenty

to talk about after its highly anticipated date of reveals. at the top of the list are big promises on the future of its artificial intelligence. as lauren martinez explains, after today, there's no doubt the ai race is on. reporter: google is changing the online search experience. wednesday during their annual developer conference in mountain view, artificial intelligence was the focus. >> we had an exciting inflection point. reporter: the company unveiled ai technology that can produce replies in seconds. >> maybe you wanted to define it further. in this case, a more elaborate e-mail might increase the chances of getting the refund. [laughter] reporter: they are testing a conversational chat bot called bard. you can prompted with questions and images. >> this is a photo of a goofy german shepherd and a golden retriever. then bard uses that to create

funny captions. reporter: the biggest announcement was how ai technology will be incorporated into their search. today, typing in a prompt will bring in those traditional blue links. eventually, it will include more extensive information and will allow you to engage in conversational mode. >> right under the snapshot, you will see the option to ask a follow-up question. reporter: ai has been around for decades but experts say we are at a crucial moment. >> this is the point at which it's becoming public. it's becoming usable at this moment. it is surprising a lot of people in the general public because of the speed. reporter: tech giants are competing and going to market fast. the professor suggests users be aware and be discerning of ai content. >> i would say the important thing is keep learning. don't ignore it. it's here. we have to own it.
