there's nothing more important than your health. reporter: hazmat crews continue to clean up a mercury spill. mercury was first discovered near a garbage can outside of the towns amtrak station monday. on tuesday, health officials found traces of mercury on several roads surrounding the train station after a truck picked up the trashcan. on wednesday, more traces found along another road leading up to rankin park. >> maybe i need to get rid of the shoes or have them tested. what do i do? reporter: the mercury levels found outside are in extremely low risk to people's health. while small levels of mercury were found on the road, the sidewalks in the area are safe to walk on. the main worry was those who might've stepped in the initial puddle near the amtrak station monday and tracked it into their homes. once inside, high levels of mercury can create serious risk. >> i am concerned about martinez and our health. and what's being done to protect

us from horrible contamination. reporter: stephanie runs a local kids camp. she says several people she works with have worries. >> i had parents call me concerned that our road would be closed to camp. they were really concerned about contamination. reporter: beside me, the streets of martinez are quiet on wednesday night. some residents are avoiding the downtown area until the mercury is cleaned up. that includes carissa. she says since she moved to towns a couple years ago, her family has experienced to health hazards. first the martinez refinery release of ash into the air last thanksgiving and now the mercury. >> now i'm worried that we can't walk our child through the amtrak to go to the park. reporter: police are still investigating where the mercury came from. tim johns, abc7news. ama: it's the high-speed police chase that caught tons of attention in the east bay. two suspects flying in and out

but it will take time for those results to be fully realized. it's essential that we all take this into account. reporter: the biden administration is set to implement new measures. some will speed up the processing of people seeking asylum and deportations. among the announced measures, abstentions, individuals who cross into the u.s. without authorization will be assumed ineligible for asylum. if removed will face at least a five year bar. human rights groups are gearing up to legally challenge these measures and monitor what will happen on the ground. >> our primary concern is that asylum-seekers will be turned away at the port of entry in violation of u.s. federal and international law. reporter: the administration plans to open 100 processing centers in different countries which would direct people to pathways to enter the u.s., canada, or spain. it will increase access to the cbp one app which has proven to be an insurmountableha r the vast majority of those
