minutes. there is your drive time's, and we will be back in the sig alert he spoke 580 coming up. kumasi: another day on the picket line for oakland schoolteachers. the strike is in its seventh day. it started last thursday, may 4 and if you look at the calendar, you see the last day of school on may 25. abc seven news reporter ryan curry live in oakland with the latest on negotiations this morning. hi, ryan. >> good morning. the union says they were at the bar until late last night with the district but still no agreement has been reached between the two sides. that means you can expect another day of picketing and demonstrations from oakland teachers. the team with the union says there has been some movements on some of the issues but still no agreement on something from both sides. progress has not been made on the union common good proposal which the district says would cost them more than $1 billion.

the district says those issues should not just involve the district but other agencies. the team says those numbers aren't accurate. >> looking for commitment to provide housing through students, we are asking for a commitment to provide climate in classrooms. we are not trying to and a con -- we are trying to provide realistic solutions to our students. >> the issues cannot be tackled through school budgets alone. they demand multi agency and government support. moreover, as common good causes may be, they should not hold children's learning hostage. >> there is much on both -- much both sides have yet to agree on. parents are letting for alternatives. in lawrence all science, it is free for students impacted by the strike.

the school district says they will be holding a press conference later on this morning to provide an update on negotiations from their sides but until then, expect demonstrations from oakland teachers to various oakland schools as the strike is ongoing. ryan curry, abc7news. jobina: schools are in session but dozens of parents are taking another pass, dropping their kids off at diamond park for solidarity school, and ad hoc effort created by parent. >> a really quick, swift decision, i brought my stuff from home and came to the park. i think that is all it was. jobina: and a daughter has autism saying sending her daughter to school with a were placement teacher was not an option. four showed up last week but yesterday she had nearly 70 students. they consist of classes all led by volunteers, circle time, and group activities with a striking teacher lending a hand as well. she is using her own money and

pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. the 33-year-old is charged with first-degree murder. that is for the murder of lorena castro. the victim's father said he is not surprised by the verdict because it upsetting -- by the plea but it is upsetting. >> this insanity thing, there's no way. there's too much proof out there to see that he is not insane, was not insane. he knew what he was doing. jobina: the defendant attorneys says his client is a paranoid schizophrenic and will now undergo two psychiatric evaluations to determine his sanity. a court-appointed doctor found a mentally competent early this year. he is expected in court in july. kumasi: new development with uc berkeley's plan to build housing at people's park. the developer resources for community development is pulling out of the project. they give the reason the lawsuit

kumasi: welcome back. it is 6:14. elon musk says he found a new ceo for san francisco-based twitter. he did not name the person but the wall street journal is reporting linda yakarino in line for the job. musk will be executive chairman. san francisco city leaders are looking to the future of downtown. there has been so much talk about the retail industry's exit from the city core. 23 stores have shut down in union square since 2020. a lot of other businesses have moved or given up their office space for work from home solutions. despite that, not everyone thinks downtown is done. ripple founder chris larson

minutes. over toward oakland, 880 is looking nice past the coliseum at 60 6th avenue. both directions of 880 north and southbound are looking great. back to you guys. jobina: today marks day seven of the oakland teachers strike, negotiations still worked on as the cool your -- school years winding down. we hear from the oakland mayor and what she is saying about the strike. reporter ryan curry is live with details. good morning. ryan: good morning. the teachers union says they saw progress toward an agreement with the school district. however, there is disagreements between both sides. specifically with the common good proposals brought up by the unions. they have still not been able to figure that part out in the negotiations in the district is saying that is something that should not be left up to the school board. they say that is something they need the city and state's help with. the bargaining team said they have been meeting with the district until midnight, several days this week to make progress

on an agreement. the school year ends in two weeks from today. students are missing out on the last month of learning before the summer time. somehechdren to wrence horome the lost learning. that is free for students impacted by the strike. teachers say they picked this time for a reason. >> we had to pick a time where we thought we would get their attention. we deftly got the district attention now. >> let's go >> while both sides continued to reach an agreement, there will also be another round this afternoon. the oakland mayor said in the statement, one oakland means we all work together toward a shared goal of the united city. one in which all residents have the opportunity to live, work, plan, and learn. that include our children who deserve to be in classrooms getting quality education in a safe, equity -- equitable, and enjoyful market.

she is hoping to end the strike soon and reach an agreement paired we are hoping to hear from the school district later. once we have an update, we will provide you for it. a lot left to be talked about and strike ongoing. live in oakland, ryan curry, abc7news. jobina: police are investigating a fire at the parking light -- parking lot of the antioch stations. take a look at this video tweeted out by contra costa county fire. it destroyed six vehicles parked in the lawn yesterday afternoon. investigators say it appears to be ignited during a gasoline theft. no word on suspect. kumasi: the antioch police chief and mayor are responding after california's attorney general launched an investigation into the police department. this is coming after complaints of habitual and consistent violations of civil rights by officers in a scandal that the contra costa county public defender's office believes may involve up to 40% of the police force. the police chief says his
