>> right away that breaking news coming out of oakland tonight where the teachers union and school district have reached an agreement tonight on the common good proposals. good evening, thank you for joining us you are watching abc seven news at 11. after two weeks of negotiations, tonight there was a major breakthrough in the oakland teacher strike. an agreement on the common good proposals was reached just a few hours ago, those proposals are related to issues that go beyond classroom learning and had been a huge obstacle at the bargaining table. as our abc news reporter explains there is still work to be done to reach a final deal. >> after two weeks on the picket line the oakland education ag disic key areaed an

on demandsngreement mon goo ors nd lekey to this agreement are on topics related to shared governments and community schools. >> we have an agreement around supports for on how students, are black thriving community schools, and school closures. >> we are really excited about having community schools really be modeled the best they can be here in oakland. >> both sides had a hard go at reaching common ground on common good proposals, the teachers union wanted more community input on the decision-making process. the district issued a statement on wednesday stating fully implementing the common good proposal would cost the district more than $1 billion. >> it certainly did not cost a billion dollars, are proposa ver gng tt that much and i have absolutely no idea how the district came up with those numbers.

we have five ftes full-time equivalent educators and that is the entire cost of the package. >> the union says what made the proposal so tough to negotiate was in part determining what shared governance would look like. >> i think i have a long-standing practice of directing the district without a whole lot of input and i think it took a little bit of time for them to hear from us, help them understand exactly what it was that we were hoping to do and show some models from around the state of where it is being done effectively. >> the oakland unified school district did not return requests for comment but did issue a state welcoming the agreement. despite disagreement there is still work to be done to get a signed deal, that union says there are details over three key areas, teacher salaries, special education programs and class-size. >> we are hoping that ousd is coming back, they know the areas

that are the sticking points and we need to get this done today for our students to get back in the classrooms. >> in oakland abc7news. >> as a reminder of the strike began on may 4. there are a total of nine school days left in the first graduation is scheduled for may 22. the last day of school is may 25. turning now to the weather and finally we are seeing that weekend warm up, it feels like spring. how long is it going to last, let us check in, we are in for a cool down tomorrow. >> things are going to be a little milder so that is more comfortable for mother's day but i want to show you several live views all at once. that is because this will give you an idea of why temperatures were so different around the bay area. will the gate bridge had fog almost all day and check out the east bay hills, you can see clear across the bay. in san francisco from sutra you see that fog starting to stretch in, we could wake up with some

patchy dense fog. you can see santa cruz on the lower right-hand side which was just gorgeous today. in fact it was 81° in santa cruz and in some of our inland neighborhoods it hit near 97°, 97 in fairfield and ukiah and lots of low 90's in the inland areas like concord and livermore and around the base some 80's. san francisco 74 but half moon bay 59 degrees because of the fog. tomorrow we will see winds from the southwest, a little milder, we will be warming up into the 70's and 80's for mother's day and all the complete accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. >> thank you. bay area residents looking to beat the heat got this, a foggy and breezy day at ocean beach in san francisco. the fog did not stop beachgoers from enjoying volleyball and catching up with friends. cooler temperatures are expected on sunday for mother's day. across the bay area this was a day to beat the heat, after a

were spiking towards 90° at memorial beach, on the russian river. >> nice cold water. we have plenty of it now. >> sonoma county are warning the public the river is flowing 450% higher than last season after a wet winter and safety precautions are needed. >> we are trying to keep the kids closer to shore. >> george and his buddies were gearing up for a kayak excursion down the river and he's got a prelaunch checklist. >> certainly we are going to be staying hydrated, it is very warm. our safety year, pfts, and a fair knowledge of the river. >> in napa county fire crews responded to the small vegetation fire on howell mountain road saturday morning. luckily the fire was contained to less than an acre. bike riders were out early for the tour of novato that annual bike ride and festival raising money for local schools.

making matters worse, witnesses say a tesla wound up plowing into an office building causing extensive damage. it all happened near the intersection of high street and brookdale before 4 p.m., it is unclear if there were any injuries. this mother's day weekend a group of moms and students are pushing for greater gun control. the organization's moms demand action and students demand action held a protest outside the conservatory of flowers in san francisco this morning. they are calling for an assault weapons ban, they urged visitors to contact their federal representatives and put pressure on congress to reinstate the ban. >> we are in front of the conservatory of flowers to send a message that we don't want flowers, we don't want massages or brunch. the thing that mothers want most of all is to ban assault weapons and add it common sense gun laws that will save our children. >> gun violence is now the number one cause of death for american children according to

the kaiser family foundation. the san francisco department of public health is encouraging people to get the mpox vaccine to prevent a summer surge. this afternoon at the health department hosted one of two scheduled vaccination events as part of second saturdays in the soma area. it takes two doses to be fully vaccinated, you can get the second dose 28 days after receiving the first. >> i am from brazil and saw the opportunity to take the vaccine and in my country they are not giving them, so i took the opportunity. >> last summer the world health organization declared the mpox outbreak a public health emergency, that lead to long lines and long waits to get the vaccine. the city's infection numbers are now low health officials say mpox is still circulating. another clinic will take place at the same location on june 10. over in the east bay cleanup enclosures in martinez will continue through the weekend after a mercury spill on monday.

that spill was first discovered in a trashcan near the amtrak station, a trash truck then leaked the mercury, cruise say they removed mercury from nearly 4000 feet of road along the trucks route. the amtrak station in martinez remains closed at least through tomorrow. a health advisory is still in effect while workers finish cleanup at some of the sites. still ahead on abc7news at we will explain how small change in the north bay aims to send a much bigger message. and a little later, the expiration of title 42 initially created chaos at the southern border. some of the problems migrants are running into, and the crunch being f

>> in the north bay, residents living in marin it could see a price increase in their utility bill this summer. the marine -- marin independent journal reports the water district is expected to vote on a rate hike tuesday. if approved bills could jump up to 20% by july 1. funds would be used to make repairs to existing water systems, create new water supply and restore emergency reserves. it would be one of the largest rate hikes seen in decades. our central mission in building a better bay area focuses now on the issue of race and social justice. an effort is underway to change the name of a little-known waterway in unincorporated novato. the move to rename black john slough aims to send a big message. abc news reporter lizza spoke to the man leading the charge. >> it is something most of us have probably never heard of or at least thought much of.

the name of this waterway in novato that feeds into the petaluma river, for wealth -- roughly 150 years it has been called lack john slough but for fascinating reasons that is now changed. >> i felt this is an important story to tell that was not really well highlighted. >> michael is a former park ranger who started a change.org petition to change the name of black john slough after researching the origins at -- of the man it is named after. it is believed the man was born into slavery in the west indies before becoming one of the first black settlers in marin, he says local newspaper clippings from the time show locals refer to him as black john. >> it was very much a name that was bestowed upon him most likely rather than a name he chose. >> we don't know why john pinkston settled here in marin county we do know he came sometime in the late 1840's and when he arrived he became a prominent part of society. he worked as a mediator between

the native americans in the settlers and he was one of the first black men if not the first to own land here in the county. >> when he passed away in 1872 it was written up in the newspaper that he was one of the pioneers of marin county. >> that is right it did not seem right to him that he was being called out for his race when no other settler was. >> he should get the same recognition and honor is anybody else who was a pioneer in marin county at that time. >> warner submitted his petition to the u.s. geological survey last year and in april he received their response, they agreed to change the name to pinkston slough. >> it is very fulfilling, i'm glad i got to help tell his story. >> it is a seemingly small change that he hopes has a big impact. >> hopefully this project inspires other people to start critically looking at the landscape around them and understand the stories that are tied to their landscape. >> in marin county abc7news. >> a new series is coming to disney plus, and its special

screening was held right here in san francisco at the castro theatre today. american born chinese is a story based on the struggles of growing up as a first-generation chinese-american in the u.s.. the original series is based on a graphic novel based on a man who grew up in the south bay. >> when i was growing up i do not have any stories where the main character looked like me, i never thought my own experiences would be worthy of being on the page or the screen but something like this shows that at the very least we are open to it now. >> the action-packed series features chinese fables and mythological gods, episodes will begin streaming on disney plus may 24, disney is the parent company of abc7news. it was a night of ins and honoring san francisco mayors at oracle park last night for the annual fundraiser taste of tail high. hundreds of community members came out to support the nonprofits work providing academic support to kids and

other programs to young people and seniors. i was honored to host the event which featured mayors as willie brown and art agnello's. abc 7 is a sponsor of the event which aim to raise money for a scholarship and so much more. the weather has been good for any event you happen to want to do these days. >> especially the outdoor events although you will need a lot of sunscreen, stay hydrated. it was hot today with a 90's out there. tomorrow night is hot. >> but still nice. >> especially if you like low 80's or 70's around the bay, that is going to be very comfortable. right now we are dealing with coastal clouds again spilling into the bay overnight and then we will wake up to some morning fog especially at the beaches. here is a live look at the golden gate bridge where it has been of the day, that is why temperatures do not warm up too much at the coast. it san francisco is currently 53, oakland 59.

san jose 69 degrees in half moon bay 52. at this time we have a live view from emeryville. you can see other temperatures right now starting to cool off. santa rosa 59 and napa 68. fairfield also 68, concord hanging onto 70 in livermore 68. we are quite a bit warmer than we were 24 hours ago, in fact double digits warmer and in mountain view and san jose and inland neighborhoods like fairfield, also concord. here is a live view from sutra. see some of that fog creeping its way back into the bay and it will spill into the bay overnight so tomorrow we could wake up to areas of some dents patchy fog especially closer to the coast. then the heat eases a little for mother's day so inland areas down from the 90's, we will see 80's and around the bay more 70's. we will see mild temperatures pretty much most of next week. i will say that too. our forecast animation shows clouds moving in, 7:00w

morning you see clouds and then it pulls back by lunchtime. you see pockets of green drizzle, especially near the beaches. then mostly sunny for the afternoon for everybody except at the coast, overnight lows will be in the 50's for the most part, near 52 in san francisco, san jose and san francisco a little milder. cooler and parts of the north bay like santa rosa. tomorrow, lots of sunshine especially inland and around the bay. where it will be cool is at th beaches, so half moon bay getting up to 60 degrees. look for low 70's around the bay, san jose 80 degrees and we will see some mid 80's and some of our warm response like antioch. also ukiah my get up to 80 so that is a little warmer. they were 97 today so that's coming down by about 10 degrees. pollen count g wi all t be moderate

policy that allowed for the quick removal of migrants from the u.s. came to an end early this week, many feared there would be a surge of migrants at the border but on friday the biden administration says so far that circuit has not been as dramatic as some predicted. >> we did not see a substantial increase overnight or an influx at midnight. >> a new immigration policy now requires non-mexican migrants to first apply for and be denied asylum in another country. migrants will have to make an appointment on an app but many are having problems with the technology. >> there is no internet in this border town, internet is very important and if you can't use the app. >> no one talks about that fact. >> if the rules are not followed migrants could be removed and not allowed to enter for five years. >> what we're doing now is making illegal immigration more streamlined and letting people know there is a legal way to get here. >> in the meantime border cities

of white supremacists. i did my inaugural address and i singled it out most dangerous threat to our homeland and i am not saying this because i am at and hbcu. i say it wherever i go. >> the speech came less than a month after biden announced his bid for a second term and with a potential debt default looming. his administration also braces for an expected surge in migrant border crossings following the expiration of title 42. a maryland man is under arrest after allegedly stealing a five ton military vehicle and leading police on a chase. according to the harford county sheriff's office, the man stole the privately owned vehicle from a home. it was elated -- later spotted on a highway. it law enforcement agency began chasing the vehicle but could not disable it. the suspect then crashed into other vehicles and eventually came to a stop in baltimore more than 20 miles from the site of the theft. that is where the man was arrested.
