were yesterday. your mother's day is looking nicer today. temperatures in the 70's and 80's away from the coast. 70 in oakland, 67 with afternoon sunshine in the city. about 80 in san jose. inland, no longer in the 90's but still warm. this afternoon, we will go 83 in concord, 84 in livermore. liz: developing news -- we are seeing a major rate through in the oakland teachers strike. after two weeks of negotiation, an agreement on the common good proposals was reached. those proposals are related to issues that go beyond classroom learning and they have been an obstacle at the bargaining table. as anser hassan explains, there is work to be done to reach a final deal. >> line, the oakland education association has reached an agreement with oakland unified school district in the key area of negotiations. >> we just came to an agreement

on our common good demand. >> common good demands or issues that go beyond classroom learning. key to this are topics related to shared governments and community schools. >> we have an agreement around on health students, our community schools and school closures. >> we are excited about having community schools be modeled the best they can be in oakland. >> both sides had a hard go at reaching common ground. the teachers union wanted more community input on the decision-making process. the district issued a statement stating fully implementing the initial common good proposal would cost the district more than a billion dollars. >> it certainly didn't cost a billion dollars. our proposals were never going to be costed at that much and i have absolutely no idea how the district came up with those numbers. we have five f

full-time equivalent educators, and that's the entire cost of the package. >> the union said what made the proposal so tough to negotiate was determining what shared governance would look like. >> they have a long-standing practice of directing the district without a whole lot of input. it just took a little bit of time for them to hear from us and help them understand what it was we were hoping to do and show some models from around the state of where it is being done effectively. >> the oakland unified school district did not return a request for comment. but they issued a statement welcoming the agreement. despite the agreement, there is still work to be done to get a signed deal. the union says what remains are details of her three key areas -- teacher salaries, special education programs and class-size. >> we are hoping ost is coming back. they know the areas that are the sticking point and we need to

responded to this small vegetation fire saturday morning. luckily the fire was contained to less than one acre. bike riders were out for the tour of nevada, and annual bike ride and festival raising money for local schools. tom harman had a simple plan to stay cool -- >> the hotter it gets, the more you sweat, the more you sweat, the more you want to drink water. get up early enough and get it done. >> 300 people used the pool on saturday. the pool will be open weekends through june and then every day through the summer. liz: that sure tomorrow, some campgrounds and yosemite national park are going to close because of flooding concerns. lower and north pines campground along with housekeeping camp will be off limits. the parks as more closures are possible. it will give a more accurate

update tomorrow morning. some of the park closed due to flooding concerns along the merced river. police are investigating after man was shot on the 200 block of main street last night. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. it's unclear if anyone has been arrested. this is vallejo's six, side this year. in oakland, vehicle trying to avoid oncoming traffic after getting sideswiped ended up making matters worse. a car ended up plowing into an office building, causing extensive damage. it happened near high street and brookdale avenue before 4:00 yesterday. it is not known if there were injuries. this mother's day weekend, a group of moms and stunt are pushing for greater gun control. the organization moms demand action and students demand action held a protest outside the conservatory of flowers in san francisco yesterday. they are calling for an assault weapons edisor tntdel erd nd pre

don't want flowers come we don't want massages. the thing mothers in america want most of all is to ban assault weapons and common sense gun laws that will save our children. liz: according to the kaiser family foundation, gun violence is the number one cause of death for american children. the san francisco department of public health is encouraging people to get the mpox vaccine to prevent a summer surge. health department scheduled one of two events as part of the second saturdays in the soma area. it takes two doses to be fully vaccinated. you can get the second dose 28 days after receiving the first. >> i'm from brazil and saw the opportunity to take the vaccine. my country is not giving them so i took the opportunity. liz: last summer, the health organization declared the mpox outbreak a public out the emergency. that led to long lines and long

waits to get the vaccine. the city's infection numbers are low but mpox is still circulating. another vaccination clinic will take place at that same location on june 10. in the east bay, cleanup and closures in martinez will continue throughout the weekend after a mercury spill last monday. this bill was discovered in a trashcan near the amtrak station. a trash truck leak to the mercury. crews say they removed mercury from nearly 4000 feet of road along the trucks route. the amtrak station remains closed through today. a health advisory is in effect while workers finish cleanup at some sites. still to come, potential water rate hike. why people who live in marin could see more pricey utility bill the summer. plus trader joe's enters a legal battle -- how the california grocery store is suing a t-shirt company and what it has to do with the president.

liz: in the north bay, people living in marin could see a price increase in their utility bills this summer. the commission is expected to vote on a hike this sunday. if approved, bills could jump up to 20% by july 1. the funds would be used to make repairs to existing water systems, create new water supplies and restore emergency services. it would be one of the largest rate hikes seen in decades. a new bill aims to get thousands of homeless people who live along creeks and streams in the south bay into housing and provide them with resources. according to our media partners at san francisco standard, the measure expands the water authority in santa clara valleyo ehacln up trash and pick up debris along those clique -- longest creeks. the bill unanimously passed the assembly last week and it nowbaf

of what it was before the pandemic. abc 7 news reporter ryan curry looks at the results. >> bart ridership continues to restrict -- to struggle. if ridership does not return to what it was before 2020, the agency could never recover. >> the system is facing a financial hole that is very hard to fill. without it, we could lose the entire bart system. >> bart says they are averaging between 100000 and 150,000 on a weekday. before the pandemic, they were averaging 400,000. the survey shows ridership declined when many stopped commuting and started working from home. most in the survey expect that to stay the same. however, with the pandemic under control, bart ridership still struggles. 45% of people in the survey say they choose not to write bart

never heard of or thought of. the name of this waterway that feeds into the petaluma river. for roughly 150 years, it has been called back john slough. but for fascinating reasons, that is changed. >> i felt this was an important strike to tell. it wasn't really well highlighted. >> he's a former park ranger who started a petition to change the name of black john slough after researching the origins of the man it was named after. john pinkston. it's believed he was born into slavery in t west indies before becoming one of the first black settlers in marin. newspaper clippings from the time showed locals referred to him as black john. >> it was a name bestowed upon him more than a name he chose for himself. >> we do not know why john pinkston settled in marin county. we know he came sometime in the late 1840's and when he arrived, he became a prominent part of society.

he worked as a mediator between the native americans and settlers and was one of the first black men if not the first to own land here in the county. >> when he passed away in 1872, it was written in the newspaper that he was one of the pioneers of marin county. >> that's right did not seem right he was being called out for his race when no other seller was. >> he should get the same recognition and honor as anyone else who would have been a pioneer in marin county at that time. >> he submitted his petition last year and in april received their response. they agreed to change the name to pinkston slough. >> it's very fulfilling. i'm glad i got to help tell this person story. >> it's a seemingly small change that he hopes has a big impact. >> hopefully this project inspires other people to critically look at the landscape around them and understand the stories tied to their landscape. >> nice work. a new series is coming to disney plus and its special screening

injured after a tornado swept through the rio grande valley. gutting businesses and destroying homes. >> we are seeing utter devastation for a community that had no warning whatsoever. >> a family of four was inside a trailer when the tornado hit. it picked that home up and tossed it onto the side of the street. the father was thrown into that boat kindly. the kids were found under a bunch of debris. amazingly, everyone was ok. >> kryst for lives across the street. >> it sounded like a nuclear bomb. whole window caved in, it picked me up off the bed and threw me into the wall. >> robert flores was killed as he was sleeping. >> he's in heaven. i knew there was going to be a lot of damage. i was praying. >> or than 50 reported tornadoes tearing across the midwest from oklahoma to nebraska where storm

chasers ended up inside a tornado. >> to where the survivors are picking up the pieces and what is sure to be a long and gut wrenching recovery. >> that was will car reporting. the marine veteran charged in the chokehold death of jordan neely is getting a lot of financial help for his defense. an online site shows thousands of people have donated more than a million dollars. he is charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of the homeless men on a subway train in new york. passengers said neely was making threats and acting erratic and that's when penny restrained him in a chokehold. he later died. developments with the writers strike. jeopardy is the latest show to be affected by the walkout. she says she w final week of the season. ken jennings will handle hosting duties instead.

the questions were written before the strike. the tony awards will not be televised on june 11 because the writers guild of america and a waiver request from organizers. today is mother's day and while many of us will be celebrate and, this year is going to be extra special for some local families whose mothers recently gave their kids the gift of an organ transplant. j.r. stone talks to two bay area families whose mothers went above and beyond. >> this is francesca, we call her frankie. she's 18 months old. >> she is my daugh born child. >> two separate families, two little girls, both found to have a liver condition in the months after they were born. it's a condition that could have killed them. >> something always felt off to me about her and the way she looked much different than my husband and firstborn.

typically we have she was so yellow she looked like a simpsons character. it was awful. >> the liver transplant was the best possible solution. the family was vocal online about her need for a liver and the world reacted. the post on social media was shared by not only stephen curry's sister but a punjabi singer. more than 250 donor applicants came forward. similar in frankie's case were more than half a dozen people said they would donate their liver. but time was an issue. frankie's health was deteriorating. in both cases, mom stepped up. >> it was about her third admission at that point. they battled a lot of obligations with liver disease and i said it's me. i'm going to go through with it.

the idea of what if i did not go through at this, frankie would die. there's a lot of anxiety there. >> both moms on different days but in strikingly similar situations went through with liver transplants. they had part of their liver taken out and then transferred to the other side of town to the children's hospital in mission bay. the girls then had their liver transplant surgeries. >> she has doubled and tripled down on our family. >> she gave life to this baby twice. >> today: is a healthy 14 month -year-old girl and enjoys singing on the microphone. frankie is healthy, enjoying life with her twin brother. >> i will tell you is a mom of multiples and a child that has medical conditions, the other moms and parents out there who have to go through it day today and all the struggles.
