appreciates what we do for our kids every day. erhood comes mother's day diff forms, fromanzo from joe to those in search for a home. thank you for joining us for this special edition of evening news. we begin it with a special celebration this afternoon for moms working to get back on their feet. a local nonprofit teamed up with a san francisco restaurant to offer on houston moms and their families a buffet meal and moments to remember. here is tara campbell. reporter: a cardi making it, photo making of a afternoon for more than 40 moms working to get back on their feet. >> it means a lot to me and a lot to a lot of the moms, because a lot of the moms do not have anyone to take us out to eat or a spouse. reporter: compass family services teaming up with san francisco's restaurant for this memory making day. >> our moms are dedicated to

overcoming all of their barriers to being stably housed, so they are putting in a lot of work. anytime we have a chance to celebrate them we jump on it. >> yuriko i would not have imagined eating with a bunch of families. reporter: jasenia escaping domestic violence, ending on the streets with her young daughter. >> i left my relationship, and i was fleeing, so i had to sleep without nobody knowing where or how. reporter: it is the story she knows all too well recently reuniting with their children. >> just getting them back in custody has been hard and challenging, and we have just faced a lot of challenges and we came to a long struggle of domestic violence. reporter: 12-year-old samantha holding onto the moment. >> is been so much, spending time with my mom is the best

thing in the world. reporter: and you had to be away from her for a little bit? >> yes. reporter: what was that like? >> it was hard, because i took care of my brother and i cooked them at lunch, dinner, did his laundry. reporter: a family building back, and an unbreakable bond between mother and daughter. >> it makes me so happy to be with my family. dion: meantime some formerly incarcerated women are enjoying this mother's day with their families thanks to an east bay nonprofit. the foundation works to identify moms who are low-level offenders in need of bail support. staff held a mother's day brunch to treat any moms and their families to a meal together. at the foundation says nearly 2/3 of women in jail are women of color, some who cannot posted bail. >> i would not be here enjoying

this mother's day if they did not help me. >> we help people out and host an event to uplift them and connect them with community services. dion: not only does the foundation help with bill support, and it connects women with legal assistance. moving on also in the east bay, chp is investigating after a good samaritan was killed by a hit-and-run driver. it happened just after 2:30 in the morning on the off ramp to highway 262 in fremont. she was the passenger in a car that pulled over to help the driver after a single car accident. she was outside her vehicle talking to that driver when a third vehicle plowed into her. it was then pushed into her, and she was killed. police say the driver of the forward it ran away and is still at large. the driver was originally trying to up was later arrested for driving under the influence. in san jose, a highway patrol officers are searching for the

driver of a semitruck suspected of fatally hitting a pedestrian on highway 101 last night. the victim has been identified as a 36-year-old man. he was found in the slow lane northbound 101 right before midnight. chp officers say he was struck by the semi-, which did not stop after the collision. as to what the pedestrian was doing on the freeway at night, that is still under investigation. it looks like oakland teachers will remain off the job tomorrow despite some progress in negotiations this weekend. on saturday the oakland education association and the district reached agreement on four so-called common proposals, a major sticking point that held up progress. those proposals include shared governance and community schools. negotiations are continuing, but there is no deal quite yet. if teachers are on the picket line tomorrow, it would be the eighth school day of the strike.

the strike began back on may 4, and there are a total of nine school days left. the first graduation is scheduled for may 22. the last day of school is may 25. at least one person has died and 10 others are in the hospital, the result of tenured out -- tornado damage in the rio grande valley. that area has been declared a disaster as residents begin the process of cleaning up. reporter: residents are surveying the damage was behind after a tornado hit the neighborhood early saturday morning in the rio grande valley . businesses and homes destroyed. >> we are seeing other devastation for a community that had no warning whatsoever. reporter: will car is in allude of the -- will carr is in the heights texas. >> the tornado picked at home up and tossed it onto the side of the street. the father was thrown into the boat behind me.

the kids were found underneath a bunch of debris. everyone was ok. reporter: luis' is because it was killed while he was sleeping. >> i knew there would be a lot of damage. reporter: an abc news cries coming from under her home. a sound technician grabbed a shovel and started digging. within minutes a terrified dog emerged from the rubble. over the weekend more than 50 reported tornadoes tore across the midwest. disconfirm tornado captured on video over the skies of illinois. forecast calling for more damaging wind and hail in areas hit by relentless severe weather in recent weeks. dion: tomorrow san jose will begin clearing hundreds of on house people who are staying on the shores of a 4 mile stretch of coyote creek. construction is set to begin on a nearly $5 million flood

professions in public policy. >> i have got three points to leave you with as you leave this institution, a mandate of going out into this world that desperately needs your voice, and those three points are to disrupt, to dismantle, and to discover. dion: jones hit points about the toll of public policy can take on a person, and it takes community to get through hard times. he made national headlines last month when he was expelled, then reinstated for his protest over gun violence on the house floor in tennessee. the biden administration's border policies are facing a lawsuit from the aclu. many predicted a surge in migrants as title 42 came to an end last week. new restrictions are in place. non-mexican migrants are required to first apply for and to be denied asylum in another country. if the rules are not followed, migrants could be removed from the u.s. and not allowed to reenter for at least five years.

temperatures right now are in the 50's and 60's for the most part, still hanging onto a couple of low 70's out there for inland neighborhoods. what a change it was compared to yesterday at this time. we are anywhere from 6 to 22 degrees cooler. there has been filed there all day yesterday and today. we are going to see the fog pushing and low clouds spread inland overnight. we could see drizzle indicated there by some of the green along the coast, and that it pulls back midday. 20 of sunshine for most everyone except at the beaches once again tomorrow. overnight lows in the low to mid 50's for everyone fairly uniform with lots of low clouds area tomorrow, temperatures similar to today's. in san francisco, we are near the average. inland areas will still get mid
