>> morning to you, michael. more than 220 severe storm reports just over the weekend across 24 states or so. there's more where that came from. from nebraska to illinois, at least 50 reported twisters this weekend. >> we're in it! we're in it! we're in the tornado! >> reporter: storm chasers inside this tornado as it ripped through nebraska. while in texas winds up to 73 miles per hour. this truck jack knifed on interstate 59 in houston. at least two people are dead and ten injured after an ef-1 tornado with winds up to 105 miles per hour tore a 200 yard wide path through laguna. christopher vasquez living to tell the tale. >> my whole roof caved in. picked me up off the bed and threw me into the wall. >> reporter: one of the victims roberto flores, his cousin living just down the block. >> he's in heaven. he probably didn't know what happened.

>> much better than you all were expecting. they have gone down. my hope is they'll continue to go down. we have a lot more work to do. >> reporter: the administration is crediting its new tougher asylum policies. they had been bracing for a surge at the border after title 42 expired last week, the policy meant to deter crossing. instead border patrol agents detained around 4,200 migrants, a drop of 2,000 from the day before, but an increase in apprehensions is still possible in the days and weeks ahead. across the region, tens of thousands remain on the move, fleeing violence, political repression and despair in their home countries. amid a sea of misinformation about biden's changing policies, abc's will carr was across the border in mexico. >> there are more than 1,500 people at this camp site. some staying in tent, others in tents made up of tarps and branches, all hoping to make it into the united states. >> reporter: to make a

successful asylum claim, migrants must first be denied protection in a country they passed through on their way to the u.s. border, or apply through an online app. migrants say appointments have been hard to come by, and many don't have good access to cell service. breaking those rules can lead to deportation and five year ban on entering the country. concerns over overcrowding in detention facilities, the administration wanted to release some migrants under supervision but a federal judge in florida blocked that plan. >> we think it's a very harmful ruling when, in fact, our border patrol stations become overcrowded, it is a matter of the safety and security of people including our own personnel. >> reporter: now, the administration is also facing other legal challenges here. the aclu and immigrants rights groups say the president's new asylum restrictions are cruel and mimic a trump era ban. they say the rules unlawfully restrict access to asylum. the white house pushing back against that, michael.

>> thank you so much, mary. now the high stakes battedle over the debt ceiling and great concerns about an economic meltdown. with the u.s. government just weeks from possible default. our senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. this is really down to the wire. president biden insists both sides are making progress but there still is no deal yet between congressional republicans and the white house to avoid a catastrophic default. time is running out. treasury secretary had warned if congress does not act, the government could run out of money to pay its bills as soon as june 1st. consequences here could be dire. troops could go unpaid, social security payments could be delayed for seniors, the stock market would likely plunge, interest rates would soar and an estimated 8 million people could lose their jobs. republicans are taking a hard line approach. they will not commit to raising the debt ceiling until the president commits to spending cuts.

we're told some possible areas of agreement could be clawing back unspent covid money as well as reforming the permitting process for energy projects. the president said he will likely meet with congressional leaders again tomorrow, but he is scheduled to head to japan for the g-7 summit wednesday, putting even more pressure on leaders to get this done and get it done quickly. >> countdown is on. rachel, thank you very much. overseas to the latest on the war in ukraine. ukrainian forces making their largest advance in months. could it give them an edge on the russians? good morning, tom. >> reporter: that advance is the most significant for ukrainian forces in six months. it's too early to say whether it will translate into a bigger shift on the ground. the russians have, for nine months, been throwing everything in the battle in that area so it's a bitter blow for them and an important boost for ukraine. breath taking video from ukrainian troops as they stormed

russian positions near bakmout. the advance coming after nine months of relentless russian attacks. it could be an early sign that ukrainians readying its offensive trying to seize the initiative in the war again. ukrainian soldiers seen throwing grenades into trenches, machine guns, tanks and armored vehicles covering infantry in what appears to be a well coordinated assault. with russian troops retreating across the field. this russian soldier suggesting he was drafted to fight and his options were to go war or prison. it comes after russian media reported two russian fighter jets and two helicopters were shot down in a single day. it happened inside russia near to the border with ukraine. ukraine denying involvement. and amid the set backs for russia, a lethal drone strike in western ukraine, unleashing this huge fire ball. moscow claiming it hit a ukrainian arms dump.

and we're also seeing reports of explosions deep behind the front lines on targets in russian occupied eastern ukraine. russian officials claiming ukraine is already using long range storm shadow missiles. the uk recently announced it was supplying those to ukraine george? >> president zelenskyy is continuing his european tour meeting with the british prime minister after talks with the pope and french president this weekend. ian panel has the latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, george. uk just confirming delivery of these long range missiles that tom was talking about after a weekend of surprise visit for zelenskyy ahead of those scheduled meetings in italy. in turn, the germans sending a plane to bring him to berlin. then last night the french whisking him to paris. this morning a surprise visit in london with the prime minister. with multiple pledges of tanks, armored vehicles, long range missiles and drones and training

for fighter pilots and soldiers. it's looking like a last minute shopping trip ahead of the up coming counter offensive. chance to show america that the major european allies are trying to pull their weight. zelenskyy telling journalists initially the offensive is in the final stages of preparation and the first steps will be taken soon. letting the ukrainians know the pressure is on to show results on the battlefield to keep that aid flowing. michael? >> thank you very much, ian. going to turn to here at home. major air bag recall for more than 1 million cars and an urgent warning about shrapnel that could explode in your car. rebecca jarvis is tracking the latest. good morning, rebecca. >> good morning, michael. the impact is far reaching. general motors is recalling nearly 1 million suv's including buick enclaves, traverses from 2014 to 2017 all with air bag parts produced by a company called arc automotive. this comes as the ntsb the

urging arch automotive to recall 67 million air bag inflaters manufactured before 2018 because they could possibly explode and spray shrapnel. at least 12 auto manufacturers have used arc components in their recall. that could ultimately affect nearly one quarter of the cars currently on the roads in the united states. arc is pushing back. the company deny their products are defective. they claim any problem with the air bags resulted from random one off manufacturing anomalies that were properly addressed with individual recalls. u.s. regulators replied to that arc in at least nine air bag related incidents they said occurred between 2009 and march of 2023 that have resulted in two deaths and multiple injuries, michael? >> if you have one of these cars from 2014-2017, what is your next step? >> sure. the sides appear to be at an

this comes as president biden is traveling for a major summit. the four university of idaho students stabbed to death last fall were remembered in graduation ceremonies. a preliminary hearing for the suspect charged in their murder, bryan kohberger is scheduled for next month. we have lots ahead, including dwayne johnson who is sharing h messe for >> first the story of suzanne morphew. she vanished on mother's day three years ago. her husband had been charged with her murder but he is now suing officials after they dropped all charges. >> barry morphew said his life is ruined. that $15 million civil suit accuses prosecutors and law enforcement of lying and with holding evidence focusing only on barry and humiliating him. authorities tell us they didn't drop the charges because they thought barry was innocent. they felt they didn't have enough evidence to conflict without a body.

this morning demands for justice for suzanne, three years after the colorado mom vanished on mother's day in 2020. authorities believe she is dead. her body never found. now officially classified a cold case. >> somebody in this community needs to keep her name out there. >> reporter: suzanne's husband barry initially charged with first degree murder and tampering with evidence, but those charges dropped just before his trial. now barry and his daughters macy and mallory are speaking exclusively to abc news claiming his life has been ruined by false accusations. what have these last three years been like for you? >> very sad. very confusing. >> so traumatic. like literally our worst nightmare. >> did you have anything to do with the disappearance of your wife?

>> absolutely not. it's very hurtful to lose your reputation and your integrity. >> reporter: barry, filing a $15 million civil suit against prosecutors, the sheriff and several investigators. >> so i know that $15 million is a huge number, but i don't think that in my mind that covers any of the damage that's happened to barry and the girls. i know he's innocent. if they would just look for suzanne outside of where they hypothesized where barry could have possibly buried her remain, they could find her. >> his daughters standing by him. you never had a shred of doubt? once you heard the evidence from law enforcement against your dad? >> i have never had a shred of doubt. not one. >> reporter: prosecutors say at the time they believed they were close to finding suzanne's body. authorities tell abc news they still believe barry morphew could be involved in his wife's

disappearance and aren't ruling out future charges. >> law enforcement, the da, they believed they had their guy. they believe there's a mountain of evidence against you. there's just not suzanne's body. >> they're wrong. they've got tunnel vision. they looked at one person and they've got too much pride to say they're wrong and look somewhere else. >> reporter: these charges were dropped without prejudice, which means if authorities feel like there's more evidence, they could charge you again. do you live with fear of that? >> well, i was innocent the first time they arrested me so i'm sure it's possible. i don't have anything to worry about. i have done nothing wrong. >> reporter: was there any indication before she disappeared that something was amiss? >> no. >> reporter: did you observe any fights, arguments, disagreements between your mom and your dad that concerned you before? >> no. >> reporter: prosecutors offering texts which appear to

show a strained marriage. suzanne referring to barry as jekyl and hyde and just before she disappeared telling barry, i'm done. suzanne confiding in a friend. macy and i had a tough talk. she's weary of the tension here. she knows how he is to me and almost begged me to divorce him. he's still pulling mal in. but barry and his daughters deny the marriage was in trouble. >> we had a wonderful life. wonderful marriage. she was just so loving and giving, and such a good mother. >> reporter: before her disappearance, suzanne fighting cancer. >> i know that she was going through chemotherapy for the last couple years before her disappearance. i know she was going through some hard things and made some bad decisions. >> reporter: what kind of bad decisions? >> she was really having trouble with the chemotherapy and the

reasons i wanted to be a doctor. to inspire people. to make a positive impact in people's lives. >> reporter: now this silver star recipient is preparing for the adventure of a life time. one of the people who could be in charge of mission control for johnny's journey is another trail blazer. nasa's first ever female south asian flight director. >> i think honestly when i was applying, i wasn't looking at myself as the first south asian or even female. i was just trying to be a flight director. knowing i was qualified to do the role. no matter my background or what i looked like. >> reporter: why is diversity so important in space exploration? >> it's a way that we represent all of humanity. right? so i think in taking a diverse group of people that represent the earth's population is super important when we do that next visit. >> reporter: another piece of the artemis puzzle is howard hu. >> every day i have to pinch myself. someone asked me what my hobby is. my hobby is human space flight. i just love it. >> reporter: he heads the orion program. the spacecraft that will take

>> for sure. >> let's talk about strength training. >> strength training is important because your body is still growing. this is one of my personal favorites. it's a core piece that doesn't require weights so ever. it's a total gym elevate core. they are showing you how to work those abs, obliques, without needing weight whatsoever. lara, let's say these pieces aren't available. you can still use a functional accessory to target the same muscle groups. jose is showing us a low to high wood chopper. really rotating about the midline of his body. >> is that getting obliques? >> that's getting obliques. benjamin is showing us a nice kettle ball swing to target the lower back muscles. we want to promote proper posture. we want them to be proud. that's doing that in that movement. >> simple. if you have kettle bells or something that weigh the same as a kettle bell, you can do this at home or get into the gym with you guys at planet fitness. >> yes. >> let's talk about gym etiquette. we're gonna get the kids back in

harlow. this was his first movie. this is old hat for you. how did jack do? >> he did amazing. he came in as a teammate. he came in ready to play. he was professional, prepared. he was focused. he was almost a method actor at some point. really created a world where we could play naturally off each other. >> you met woody on a plane several years back. i did. >> tell us about that. >> one of my first notable jobs was a tv show called "friday night lights." >> i think we heard of that? >> i happened to be on it. jamarcus hall. shout out to that character. i was flying back from austin texas. i was sitting in the wrong seat. one of my cast members, no one is going to sit here. i said, i don't want to sit there. it might be someone else's seat. he was like, no. it was late. we were flying back on a red eye. no one is on a plane. i'm sitting in this seat. they are about to close the doors, someone walks in, last person on the plane and it's woody harrelson and i'm sitting in his seat. i was like, ah.

he's about to kick me off the plane. they go, sir, this is his seat. you have to get up. this whole thing. he goes, let him sit there. seat's a seat. he ends up sitting in front of me. which is not his seat. he turns around, offers me some raw food. you hungry? i was like, no, man, i'm good. he was so kind. that was the first time we ever met. >> might we see a cameo appearance? >> in this? honestly, no. >> aw, boo. okay. you are a real basketball player. you played college basketball university of san francisco. how about jack. did you have to show him a thing or two? can he jump? >> jack is super athletic. that was the surprising thing to me. everybody asks that thing, can he jump? the movie is called white men can't jump. that white man can jump. growing up a basketball head and being the gym rat that i was, we had five movies. white men can't jump, he got game, glory rose, sunset park and then -- the one with samuel jackson. i can't remember. coach carter. >> okay. got it. how much pressure did that put on you to now actually be acting in one of your favorite movies of all time? >> it was less pressure. it was more a responsibility. i was like, okay. once i got this opportunity, i knew i had to lock in. for me, when you get the opportunity to reboot something or retell something, those guys as actors are so iconic to me. the story means so much to me. let me make sure i do my best to just honor it. make sure i show up every day prepared and understanding the responsibility. i didn't feel pressure. i felt responsibility to prepare and bring the best to my project, my cast mates, my crew mates, everybody. i kind of went back into athlete mode.

legitimately. i was like, all right. let me lock in every day. if my call time is 6, let me make sure i'm there at 5:30 so i know i have done it all to give it all. >> you're making all your own shots? >> surprisingly enough, because i hadn't shot in awhile. everybody was like, you're really good? i was like, there was a time. >> i know. this is my thing. >> there was a time. >> quickly before i let you go. you brought up "friday night light." that was 15 years ago. you said it almost didn't happen. you were making other plans. >> i was definitely making other plans. i was kind of making unilateral plans. ultimately when i was in school, i got out of school and i was like, let me go to grad school. i'm either going to go to grad school or pursue acting. i really looked up to the sky and i was like, look. if it's supposed to be for me, then something is going to happen. if not i'm going full force into grad school. i had been doing a series of auditions and getting nothing.

i was going through work shops and getting nothing. i auditioned for this one show. ended up getting a call from my then manager when i was sitting in class. i walked outside. she said she booked it, you got it. i was like, i got what? she said "friday night lights." you leave in a week. i said, cool. i grabbed my book. i leave. my professor goes, where you going? i said, i'm not coming back. i got a job. bye. i never came back. >> we're glad it all worked out for you. >> me, too.
