moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. ama: a golden state debate over the strength of one of california's leading lawmakers. questions of health and cognitive fitness growing louder with more asking, is senator dianne feinstein fit to serve? dan: thanks for joining us. those questions about her capacity to serve in congress have been swirling before her recent battle with shingles. ama: today, a reporter asked her about it. reporter: do you feel like you are fit to assume -- >> i'm sorry. i can't right now. reporter: what do you think about calls for you to in the week senator feinstein appeared to not know she'd been away from dc for months, recovering from shingles. and while some democrats are calling for her resignation, others are firing back in their full support. uh. abc7 news reporter j.r stone is here with us with details on this j.r. dan alma to many it

been questioned over her contradicting responses to retirement questions and her responses on where she was the last three months. there are risks after having brain complications with shingles. >> there are lots of risks for dementia. twice the rate of dementia in older individuals. >>'stio tt she has memory loss problems. there's no question about that. take a look at the tapes. does that keep her from doing her job? that's the question. right now as far as washington is concerned, her job is to hold up her hand and phone. reporter: feinstein is in washington and his voting so there's a belief that some of the concern out there will cool down as things get back to normal. many people might be how much the staff is involved with day-to-day things. not only with feinstein but many other lawmakers in congress.

j.r. stone, abc7news. ama: thank you. new developments in the east bay. upset homeowners in pleasant hill just finished up at a special city council meeting. look at where the new apartments were recommended to be billed. one area would be on pass on noble hill. one city committee picks these sites to be able to complete -- comply with new state required housing sites. there was a pitch directly to the council with one saying the proposal needs more time to iron out details. >> it's not like we are talking about putting them in an urban hells gate. this is pleasant hill. what we are all saying is, take the time to figure out a better plan to submit to the state. ama: about 2000 homeowners have signed up a dissident -- position objecting to them. dan: a massive 7.7 earthquake has hit in the pacific.

reporter: on the same day as opening night of aladdin, the bay area children's theater announcing an end to their nonprofit. >> we are shocked. all the families that were involved here are shop. reporter: families like tom frank saget feels like the rug or the magic carpet is being pulled out from underneath these kids without notice. >> it is so sad. what are they going to do and who will step up for them? reporter: this is the first production her 11-year-old daughter has been a part of. for her. >> it's all she looks forward to. school has been tough for her. to have a friend circle outside of school has been so important. it is perfect for her mental health because she has something to look forward to and focus on. she's excited about singing the songs and learning her lines. reporter: despite selling out shows and summer camps, the board president says the closure is in effect from the pandemic.

amazing things. i hope the community sees that. reporter: abc7news. dan: big news in higher education. uc berkeley's board of regents has voted to establish the new college -- the first new college and more than 50 years. data science in computer science are already among the most popular majors at berkeley. the addition of a new college is expected to help meet the increasing demand from employers in need of employees with skills. ama: you've heard of a poet laureate. san francisco now has a drag laureate. it was made official tonight. >> and here is your job description. [laughter] be fabulous all the time. ama: mayor london breed bestowed the honor earlier this morning. reggie aqui got the scoop on the announcement. he broke the news with the

of what appears to be a large turtle, the size of a spare tire. dan: we just showed the video to a reptile expert who believes they could be an alligator snapping turtle. >> they will eat anything. if you put your foot in front of it, it will bite you. >> at first i thought it was a boulder moving in the water. i looked closely and realized it was a pretty big snapping turtle. ama: the california department of fish and wildlife believes it was probably someone's pet that was let go. officials plan to investigate. there have been 25 to 30 reported sightings of snapping turtles in california and only one in sonoma county. dan: this one is causing a lot of buzz. ama: a check on our weather now. dan: sandhya patel is here as the weekend arrives. sandhya: i have a little bit of everything for everyone this weekend. good evening to all of you. let's talk about our natural ac. rolling in tonight
