next time my shoes hit the pavement. >> my name is ernie reyes, i was a fourth-grade teacher, i am a survivor from may 24th, 2022. i look at my arm and it's a constant reminder of what happened that day. being a teacher was -- it was my life. i have done it for 17, 18 years. and i identified myself as a teacher. actually, i need to take my meds for this. [laughs] that's funny. not being a pill person, becoming one has been a struggle too. i got though one, two in my first. and it has changed my life, because i can't do much.

uvalde at robb >> it was separate shots, he did not actually come to my classroom. he turned around and entered one of the rooms. i'm still not clear if it was 112 or 111. ♪ ♪ >> i when we came in, everybody was screaming. he said good night and started shooting everybody. >> he tried to shoot at me, and i saw that he shot at me and i just fell down. >> i just heard a loud sound, a bang. and then after that there was more. just more bangs. >> all we heard was just the rapid-fire, rapid-fire, rapid fire. >> there were 100 rounds that went off in less than a minute,

it was just instant. >> we have a subject with nar. ♪ ♪ >> got an alert from school. >> alert to parents, there is an active shooter at robb elementary. a law enforcement is on site. >> someone said, hey, there is a school shooting and the guys still in school. >> i just told them, they told me there is a shooter at robb. >> i said i will be there right now. i'm on my way. >> all we heard was like gunshots. everybody was scared. >> i stood up from my crouched position to look at my students to tell them to get closer to me. and when i stood, that's when i felt the gun shot.

>> after the last student was out, they started to tell me, come on, let's go. >> i said, i am shot, i can't. >> we hava teachn their shotn er ho. >> so one of the officers jumped in and push me out of the window. and the other two caught me and the other officers started walking me towards the parking lot. >> the teacher is out. >> she went through the wall and everything? >> me and my friend helped everyone out. so we were like the last ones to get out. and going to the funeral home. >> when i saw him run out, he gave me a sense of relief. i thought i had lost him. >> we are sure that we got all of the children out? >> not 100% sure, but i think

and i don't understand how i did not have that motherly instinct to say, just come home with me. i know she would still be here with us. >> i know at the end of the day i'm always going to be angry about what happened. i'm going to be pistol off about it. but it always comes back to like i have to be the best i can be for my son. because if i am angry and hate the world, then how am i going to teach my son to love and care about everyone else? how am i going to teach him to be the best man he can be. ♪ ♪ [cars honking] >> a few days after i was out of the hospital, i was surprised with the parade that my family put together. ♪ ♪

[cars honking] >> i did not think that there was that much support. it was a little bit overwhelming to see everybody. >> this is the little parade. it was just the staff, the staff. they just told my sister "have a table out there and be outside" -- i don't know, by like 7:00 or something. [laughs] [horns honking] >> caitlin was across the classroom from me, but i interacted with her all the ti time. she is just something else. she is a special girl. >> we love you, we are so glad you are home. >> they dropped off sunflowers and balloons and things. it was really cool.

>> this is rosa, she was a nurse who tended to me at the emergency room. and i kept asking her questions, you know? if i was going to make it. ♪ ♪ [horns honking] it was very emotional, because class. i just told her that i was sorry. it still pains me that there was nothing i could do. i had so much survivor's guilt after that, because like, i made it -- and none of them made it.
