showers hours before the event kicks off. we were just talking about it, could not stop talking during the break. thank you so much for being here. 2023 due lo la -- we know according to the cdc, black women are three times more likely to die related to proing si preg preg r people of all backgrounds to celebrate the future and vision of what birth could really be and it's a defining event for us, the first and only festival of i kwler cler. workers, hospital systems, families, and also the brands that wrap around and provide support services for these people in a time where we need it most. you know, with the statistics, we know them, but the same time it's important to like elevate a conversation around celebration and joy because joy is also our birthright. >> janai: and i love that you say it's around joy, and my births were magical but it's not the experience for everyone. why is centering that joy so important, especially with such a tough topic? >> i think a lot of the conversation has led people to feel disempowered and we want people to feel like they have self-trust and empowerment as

they move through the pregnancy and birth process. there's a lot of information and i think it can make people feel like they don't have options or that there's nothing that they can do to improve their birth outcome, and the doula expo you can learn about solutions, learn about strategies, you can learn about organizations doing work to improve maternal health outcomes. >> janai: and not just about families, but birth workers and doulas. talk about the burnout for doulas, especially at the time they are playing such a crucial role. a really incredible report and research around birth worker burnout released earlier this year and what we found, case loads and underpay and just really femnized work in general being not valued in our culture leads to people taking on more work than they should and it leads to burnout and people are

stressed bec experiences they encounter inside of hospital systems, with their clients, and so there's not like adequate time to like decompress and destress and go back into the world, and so we need to create spaces where people can really embrace self-care, they can relax, feel supported, we are lifting them up, again celebration, what i love about the doula expo we have a lot of spaces for respite, we have a kate spade -- there is a wellness lounge that they have created you can get therapy and relaxation, we have a wellness park where people can do yoga and mindfulness, there are things to do to create retreat inside the space. even though you are getting content, there is also take a breath. >> janai: dads play an important role. >> we have two dads talking, charles johnson, you may know,

he lost his wife as a result of medical negligence after a routine c-section, he's going to be in conversation with a father who is a doula and has an organization in philly he's training up doula dads. we think it's so important for men to take a role, and especially in a time where people center it on women and just like women and birthing people but it's not, it's everyone, a human rights issue. >> janai: thank you so much for being here and good luck with this event. the coachella for birth workers. love that. thank you, latham. and turning now to trans visibility in media, and the author who wrote the book on it publishing at this crucial time for the transgender community. take a look. >> as state legislatures from florida to nebraska introduce anti-trans bills affecting bathrooms, healthcare and pronouns, now visibility through media representation is becoming more and more vital for the trans community. and it's the subject of

journalist tre'vell anderson's new book "we see each other, a black trans journey through tv and film." >> it often feels people think we as trans people dropped on to the earth but we have a long history in every community and culture since the beginning of the time, message to remind people we have always been here, we ain't going nowhere as well, and then also for the members of community that because we belong to this long line of trans brilliance, right, we will be able to make it past this moment. >> yeah, and part of the issue around this is that for many, movies and tv, that's their many exposure to members of the community and you say that visibility is a paradox, we are often seeing either violent depictions or exaggerated characters, rather than everyday people and their lives. >> a place where people can treat us as regular folks and

not anomaly or aberration in society, but yeah, visibility is a paradox because we are the most visible we have ever been as a community, but we are also facing an unprecedented legislative attack, right, on our lives, particularly the lives of trans women and girls, and it's really interesting, i would say, because folks like you mentioned, folks do believe that they have never met a trans person, right, and so they believe the only things they are getting about trans people are -- >> i love you use the word believe, that doesn't mean that's the case but what they believe. >> what i love to say, first of all, trans people, we exist, we are your neighbor, your barista, the person bagging the groceries at the grocery store but maybe you don't know that you have not yet created a space safe enough to tell their truth so they feel they have to hide or keep it to themselves as a means of

for the wife of a nigerian man, essentially, they are from all countries of the world but all live in nigeria. >> janai: and your main character is a nigerwife herself but a community of other nigerwives she leans on. you have a background in international journalism and play writing, i digested it so quickly, tell me about writing the thriller and how your background helped along your journey. >> lagos is such a dramatic city and i think just being there was so inspiring, meeting a lot of different characters there, and just feeling the intensity of the city. it just naturally became this thrilling story about a woman who disappears and people have to try and find her. >> janai: i love how the story is told, we love partnering with little free library to give

copies across the u.s. one of our stewards has a question for you. >> good morning, and hi, vanessa, i loved your book, it was a thrilling ride. what really intrigued me was learning about the city of lagos and this mysterious network of foreign wives and nigerian men called the nigerwives. i was really interested to find out how much you did your research and how much might have been from personal experience. >> well, it is a really personal story. being a nigerwife myself, and then also realizing there was something so specific and fascinating about the nigerwife experience, even though we are all from different countries, we have all got such like similar kind of challenges, you know, and obsess about similar things, and sort of a certain way of

kind of dealing with those challenges. so i really wanted to capture that in nicole's story. >> janai: and i think you did, you shared a couple similarities with nicole. i loved the main character. hbo has scooped up the film rights and this is adapting the nigerwife into a limited series and described as white lotus meets little -- big little lies. what can you tell us about it? >> yeah, i mean, it's totally thrilling, i can't say too much about it but basically the show runner on the nigerwife with hbo is amy, who was an executive producer and director of "insecure," one of my all time favorite shows and i'm super excited to see how she recreates the lagos of the nigerwife for the tv show. >> janai: viewers will have to see more of the conversation from a couple weeks ago when we

>> all news, all morning. >> good morning, everyone. i'm liz creutz. today in half moon bay, a public summit will be held to address how the community can improve the lives of farm workers. it comes nearly four months after the tragic mass shooting at two different farms in half moon bay, where seven people were killed. the summit aims to shed light on some of the challenges farmworkers face, including their living conditions like access to clean water and health care. the summit is from 1 to 3 p.m. at the boys and girls club of the coastside event center. happening today in oakland, the grand opening of a seven bedroom home by ronald mcdonald house charities. the opening celebration and block party kicks off at 10 a.m. the home is just steps away from ucsf benioff children's hospital, oakland. it provides families with a place to stay while their children receive treatments at the hospital. a reminder abc seven news anchor dan ashley's band will be playing there at 1230. also today in the east bay, the fremont burger and brew festival kicks off from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at downtown center plaza. local breweries will
