solutions, this is abc 7 news. dan: our reaction crash claims re-lives, shutting down both sides of highway 101 for he arlearning family and friends and has the story. j.r.: 28-year-old will live on in pictures like this. he was one of three people killed in this sunnyvale highway 101 crash early monday morning. >> i told him the last time we spoke was that i promise you once i get this civic type car, i would give you a ride.

and now i can in the car. sorry. j.r.: his lifelong friend was broken up when i spoke with him monday night. with the california highway patrol say 2040 old paul was also killed along with another man whose name has not been released. officer ross lee tells crash started with a driver in a ford pickup truck losing control and hitting the concrete wall of the center divider. >> that crash set up a chain reaction that involved six vehicles. at some point during this series of vehicles crashing, three of the drivers of these involved vehicles got out of their cars and were standing in close proximity to the vehicles and their cars. j.r.: another vehicle crashed into the scene, proving to be fatal for the three men. >> the three males who were

struck as pedestrians, their vehicles, to our knowledge and information we have available, had all been involved in the crash prior to them getting out of the vehicle. j.r.: offices are still trying to figure out what caused the initial crash involving the pickup. they say getting out of or staying in your vehicle after a crash is a decision that must be made in a case by case scenario. pete says tyler loved snowboarding, videogames, and making people happy. >> p is the type of guy that would always -- he is the type of guy that would always walk into a room and smile. j.r.: i did speak with the mother of 24-year-old paul who initially saw our story this morning and reached out looking for her son. she has since gotten word that he did not make it. she told me he was kind, thoughtful, and intelligent. someone who was moving their

furniture for them when all of this happened wish the family the best going forward. ama: it is heartbreaking. thank you. productive but no progress. that is how house speaker kevin mccarthy is describing his meeting with president biden this meeting as debt ceiling negotiations continue. they have 10 days to find a deal or risk the government default on its bills. >> we have disagreements. we have more revenue than at any time coming in in a 50 year average, but we both need to change the trajectory. ama: the biggest sticking point, republicans say they will not raise the debt ceiling until the president agreed -- agrees on a spending cut and requiring stricter requirements for federal aid programs like odfost .ampresident biden has agreed on some military cuts, but only if republicans raise taxes on the wealthiest americans and corporations.

dan: with negotiations coming down to the wire and with so much at stake, you will hear more about the debt ceiling this week and that is why we are making it tonight's abc 7 deep dive at 11:00, specifically how you would be affected if the u.s. government default. tim johns is here tonight with a look at this financial crisis. tim: if the government does default on its debt, it would not just mean we cannot pay our creditors. things like social security tax and medicare benefits would not be passed on to people. that is a concern for many in our own community. >> we are in an insane situation right now. tim: republicans and democrats are still unable to reach a deal to raise the country's debt ceiling. if a compromise is not r the federal government could default on the money it owes. >> that would be an earthquake for the financial markets.

tim: daniel altman is the chief economist at insta work. while the impact would be widespread, some states would be dealing with a few effective dollars. the estimate california's implement rate could nearly double. >> we are already seeing fears about what downturn could look like and the failure to reach a deal on raising the debt limit could make that worse. tim:is a human impact. social security checks and veterans benefits could be delayed, impacting thousands in the bay area. >> folks already have a plan for that money and they needed to be able to stay housed and buy their groceries, pay for their car payment or insurance payment or. childcare and health care needs. tim: kelly works with organization in the bay area. she says a delays and benefits is the last thing people need. >> folks do not have much of a savings question.

if there is an emergency that cost $400, they would not be able to take care of it. tim: that is why she urges politicians to remember the real-life impact their decisions have. >> consider the families and our neighbors. these are our communities and neighbors. tim: treasury secretary janet yellen says she believes the government will run out of money by june 1. dan: thanks very much. now to breaking news in the capital. a man is facing a slew of charges in bc after a u-haul truck crashed into security barriers outside lafayette park near the white house. the alleged driver under arrest right now. police are still investigating whether the crash was delivered -- deliberate, but please tell us that the suspect is facing five charges including threatening to kill or harm the president, vice president, or their families. ama: scary moments at the river

outside sacramento. rescue crews had to pull 18 from the fast-moving waters tonight. the stranded person held onto a tree before -- for several minutes before rescuers swam over to him. the teen was on a flotation device when he fell off. he was not wearing a life jacket. dan: let's go to abc7news meteorologist sandhya patel. ama: she has the latest on river conditions and accuweather 7-day forecast. sandhya: a look at what to expect if you are going to yosemite or tahoe. with the snowmelt flooding, rivers and streams are flowing fast. always keep a close eye on kids and hypothermia can occur shortly before you get into the water, so be careful. you can slip and fall on rocks or get carried away by the fast-moving waters. as the river -- weather has turned towards the warmer weather, we have seen the reset

super bowl lx will kick off from levis in february, but the biggest tournament in football, the world cup, kicks off in summer of 2036. levis will play as one of the north american host cities. ama: that means major revenue. lauren martinez has more on the excitement. lauren: two global events are coming to levi's stadium in 2026. >> excited to see it back here so soon. i am thankful i live in a big city like this. lauren: the president of the 49ers said the bid to have the super bowl returned to the bay area has been going on for six months. >> we know with all of us coming on line that there is ton of competition for these world-class events. lauren: by the time super bowl lx kicks off, there will be $175 million put into improving levi's stadium. >> we do not get this event or

the world cup without that. lauren: the santa clara mayor said having one of those events outstanding and put within a few months of each other will take planning. >> the world cup alone could be multiple games in our city. it is not just one game. we know what to expect with the super bowl. lauren: gilmore plans to work with it the host committee to bring more fan events to game day. >> i want to see a lot more than last time. lauren: the president of the committee said super bowl lx will be similar to super bowl 50, but the planning fan engagement is new to the bay area. looking at santa clara, san francisco, and the east bay to bring in lots of fans. >> the draw, the attraction, the colors, the atmosphere just brings life into the city. ama:

dodgers pride night controversy after a week of uproar. the dodgers had re-invited the sisters of perpetual indulgence to the event. the dodgers right that we have asked the sisters of perpetual indulgence to take place on the field at our annual pride night on june 16. the sisters have accepted the invite, writing in their own statements, a full apology was given to us by the dodgers staff which we accept. we believe it is sincere because the doctors have worked 10 years with our community -- daughters have worked 10 years with our community. the dodgers had disinvited groups in controversy after catholic leaders complained. one sister it says the back-and-forth has come with a silver lining. >> we have received over $15,000 in donations so far, which every single penny will go directly back into our lovely community. ama: the sisters have received a second invite, this time by the

mayor of anaheim. she has invited them to be her personal guests at the angels pride night on june 7. dan: the public memorial for legendary drag performer michelina is tomorrow and is expected to draw a huge crowd. she died suddenly during a trip to london last month. organizers say the memorial will feature performances, stories, and more to honor the many facets of their life. castro street between 18th and mike it will be closed from noon until midnight. crowds will be allowed onto the street starting at 5:00 p.m. muni is rerouting around the area. tonight we are closing out the end of harvey milk day, honoring the official election of the first gay politician in california.

dan: animal rights activists are calling for action after a series of horse deaths at golden gate field in berkeley. the latest is a six-year-old thorough bed -- thorough bread who died after a race on sunday. the horse was the eighth fatality on the track this year. that according to the state horse racing board. that is the same number of horse fatalities at the year including -- as churchill downs. they had two deaths during the kentucky derby. ama: the state senate has passed a bill that would establish a guaranteed income program for high school students and would give him housed seniors $1000 a

month for five months. it is an effort to help them move for college and joined the workforce. it will put 15,000 high schoolers in a position to create the life that they want. the proposal moves onto policy committees in the state assembly. dan: venmo is ready to introduce a new service that allows parents to open a new account for teenagers. it will launch next month and will allow teens to send and receive money via the app. venmo teen accounts will come with a debit card and controls for parents to monitor transactions. parents or legal guardians must sign up for 18 account on behalf of their children. each account is connected to the parent's personal venmo account. ama: time for at 11:00, making you aware of the storylines you might hear in the days to come. tomorrow is the 103rd annual city meat breakfast at the chamber of commerce. city beach brings together top business and city leaders to

discuss san francisco's greatest challenges. organizers will also reveal the results of their poll to show opinions on issues like crime, quality of life, and housing affordability. dan: california reached a landmark deal today on water conservation. it is to avoid a crisis on the colorado river. california, arizona, and nevada will cut water use by millions of gallons over the next four years. the cut will be split among farmers, tribes, and cities. stakeholders working with the government to iron out a plan for short-term payments in exchange for water reductions. >> it is an important stop gap as we are dealing with an armagedd,ut it is just a stopgap for the next few years in order to buy us the time for there to be a more thoughtful reassessment of the way we manage the river. dan: the deal is voluntary among

the three states. the hope is this will prevent the need for the feds to intervene down the line and make cuts mandatory. ama: a bay area tech firm is using artificial intelligence to help homeowners detect -- before they go out of control. it is a small solar panel device planted outside, to help detect fires moments before igniting. through an app, the sensor sends a notice to your phone if a fire is detected. >> the concept of the indoor are also incorporating other sensors. it will be a game changer because fires are going to be stopped earlier than ever before. ama: developers say the sensors have performed well in testing. it is scheduled to roll out to the public in fall for $299. we are always getting a little concerned about fires.

temperatures anywhere from the 50's to the 70's as you head out. here is a view from the golden gate bridge camera and it will be a little murky for commuters especially near the coast and bay. a combination of high clouds and fog overnight. a cooling trend will continue the rest of the work week. let's check out your memorial day weekend. morning fog giving way to sun on saturday and it will be mild inland, but certainly cooler on the coast. memorial day will be holding steady, upper 50's to mid 70's. we are not worried about heat. tomorrow will be nice for oakland tech high school as they graduate 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. as you are arriving at 5:00, it will be bright and sunny like your futures. temperatures will be dropping especially around the time you come out of paramount's theater and turning cloudy by 8:00 p.m. keep that in mind as you go about your plans.
