deadly shooting case of banko brown. after days of protests and a surveillance video showing the moment that remember, this all started back in late april. brown was suspected shoplifting and shot to death by a security guard outside of walgreens in san francisco. ama: j.r. stone is following the story from the newsroom and has the new details. reporter: the lawyer for brown's family tells us this decision doesn't mean that the attorney general's office will prosecute. but they could if they find the decision to not file charges was contrary to evidence. rick jenkins told us in a statement tonight, we welcome the attorney general's review and will assessed and cooperate as needed. rallies for banko brown one

after the other after the other and now news from sacramento. california attorney general rob bonta will review the case. >> i'm hopeful. i'm hopeful. it brought tears to my eyes. reporter: that is banko brown's mom who we spoke with 10 minutes after she learned of the decision to review the case. a case where a case where security guard working at walgreens is seen on surveillance video confronting brown, suspected of shoplifting according to police. a scuffle ensues. a short time later, that security guard can be seen shooting and killing brown. district attorney brooke jenkins chose not to file criminal charges against the security guard. previously defending that decision, saying she believes he acted in self-defense. tuesday, abc7news received statement from the attorney general spokesperson saying, our

office has agreed to review whether the san francisco district attorney's decision not to file charges was an abuse of discretion. >> i'm grateful. >> i don't want to say anything. i want to see what happens after this. reporter: some family members are skills -- still skeptical. >> i don't trust them. i don't know what to expect it's happening almost every day. they will keep dropping charges on people that are murderers. reporter: until you see some charges, it's not progress? >> pretty much. >> he needs to be in jail. he needs to be put behind bars just like banko's life was taken. reporter: tuesday afternoon, san francisco supervisors adopted a resolution urging not only the state but the feds to review the banko brown shooting.

j.r. stone, abc7news. dan: thank you very much. a chaotic scene in san francisco as the board of supervisors held its meeting outside to address the city's drug use crisis. things quickly spiral. >> [inaudible] dan: interrupted by the crowd, aaron peskin called a recess in the meeting was moved back inside. london breed made a fiery speech about the open air drug markets in the need for change before things went downhill. >> we have tried over and over again. what we are doing is not working. in fact, our local resources have increased but it hasn't dealt with the problem based on the magnitude of what we are experiencing. i run into people in the tenderloin and they say, we would have never been allowed to get away with this stuff back in the day. dan: san francisco police

arrested a woman first -- for throwing a brick. the injuries are not life-threatening. ama: a deadly morning at a san francisco bus stop. it started with a carjacking in a different part of the city. police are still investigating the details but it became a major breaking news earlier today. just one of the big stories leaving tonight's abc7news to know. one person is dead and several other bystanders heard after a bad bus stop crash. police say someone carjacked a city employee vehicle in the soma area, then got into a chase before crashing into another car that careened into the bus stop. walmart will pay california half $1 million for illegally selling brass knuckles online within the state. the site stopping future sales. walmart will also allow customers to report illegal weapons on its website. negotiations on raising the federal debt ceiling are still

extended in 2022. now the city has plans to create a pedestrian mall. >> from what we've understood, allowing every business to bring their patio out to the edge of the sidewalk since sidewalks will be needed anymore when this is open for foot traffic. reporter: it requires businesses to move outdoor seating from the street closer to the sidewalk next to their building. the plan also calls for a 20 foot wide walkway down the middle of the street. >> i think it will boost up once people see that it's all uniform and everybody will be set up the same way. reporter: the general manager said these plans won't impact their seating footprint but hopes this will attract more people to such a core location of downtown. >> just being so close to everything else. you have multiple restaurants out here you can choose from. there are so many things within walking distance. reporter: the makeover will take at least 2.5 years and are

family. the driver did stop and is cooperating with police. ama: new details about a story we brought u.s. breaking news last night. tonight, investigators finished searching the home of the man suspected of intentionally crashing a u-haul into security barriers near the white house. documents say the 19-year-old man told investigators his goal was to get to the white house and seize power. authorities are trying to determine how the suspect was radicalized. the secret service alleges that man pulled a nazi flag out of the truck and told agency embraces hit lorenzo leader. dan: it's our guiding mission every day at abc 7 to help build a better bay area. we are finding some of those breakthroughs in that regard. our first is the big push to keep neighbors safe in the fruit feel district. we were there for a community news conference were business owners held city leaders to their promise of making that area safer. merchants shared a list of demands of today's meeting.

the list included more cameras to be installed, parking, street adjustments, and more security in the area. business owners say there's been four shootings within the past two months. it has caused significant safety concerns and affected their businesses. >> people don't care. they shoot. they don't care who is walking by, who was driving. you can't go to sleep comfortable. dan: the oakland mayor and the acting city police chief will hold a news conference tomorrow to lay out there crime prevention plan in the wake of these and other crimes. it is scheduled to start at 8:30 in the morning at oakland city hall. our next building a better bay area breakthrough is in the world of education. california state superintendent tony thurman is stepping into help school districts tackle declining enrollment. >> if downsizing is necessary, if sites need to re-reduce, how is that done an equitable way that doesn't advantage certain

neighborhoods or student groups? dan: thurman held a webinar this morning to brainstorm strategies that could counteract the enrollment issue. more marketing to parents in bringing popular programs into the schools. state data shows that online bay area counties have experienced a decline in enrollment over the last five years. it's becoming a big issue. to the south bay. we've been keeping tabs on a really great program. that could significantly help those who have a criminal record. the reentry small business incubator program will help formerly incarcerated people become entrepreneurs. it's a 20 week program granting members up to $25,000 to start a business. for more on this story or any of our work to build a better bay area, you can see more at abc7news.com. ama: california is experiencing a shortage of veterinarians and it's making it hard for parents to get the pet checked out. a coalition of animal support groups met this morning.
