conversation with elon musk on twitter spaces, the site's platform for audio chats. musk says the conversation is not an endorsement. but my preference, and i think would be the preference of most americans is really to have someone fairly normal in office. former president trump's team called the venue perfect for desantis, writing this way he doesn't have to interact with people and the media. desantis was elected governor with trump's support, even running an ad where he read trump's book to his child. then mr. trump said, you're you're fired. i love that part. now, desantis must run against trump without alienating the former president's followers. you know, rhonda, sanctimony has had a crowd in staten island. desantis has been vocal about opposing what he calls woke culture after signing several new laws limiting school curriculum relating to gender identity or sexual orientation. we need to restore sanity to our society. we need to restore normalcy to our communities. desantis is expected announcement comes one day after a miami dade elementary school banned students from reading a poem by

amanda gorman. the poem the hills we climb was written and read by the poet at joe biden's inauguration. gorman says she is gutted by the decision. the latest polls show trump expanding his lead in the republican primary by double digits. now to the life threatening typhoon barreling towards the us territory of guam. the island's residents have prepared for days as the area's strongest storm in decades arrives, bringing a triple threat of wind, rain and storm surge. overnight the us territory of guam has been bracing for a direct hit from typhoon more likely the worst storm to hit the island in decades. as the storm closed in winds of up to 140mph were forecasted. the storm, capable of hitting with the force of a category four hurricane. you want to stay in the most safe place in your house, away from windows ahead of the storm. the governor issuing a mandatory evacuation of low lying areas, telling residents to seek shelter. i am very concerned and

worried about your safety and i want you to take these warnings seriously. president biden approving an emergency declaration as the military moved planes and ships away from the island. typhoon mawar expected to be the strongest storm to impact the island since the super typhoon hit in 2002. that storm causing $700 million in damage, flash flooding. you barely see hail far dominating out here. north of lakeview. back on the mainland just north of houston, several storms snapping power lines and downing trees in the city of conroe, a two story home under construction collapsing. two men were killed in the collapse and seven were injured. family members identifying one of the two men killed. brian aguilar. no his father telling our station he had just turned 21. in nearby huntsville, storms damaged more than 20 homes and officials in huntsville also report severe damage to a

school. a closer look at the forecast coming up in minutes. a missouri man accused of ramming a truck into a barrier near the white house is due in court today. the secret service says 19 year old sai kandula is a sympathizer who wanted to seize power and kill president biden. court documents show kandula rented the u-haul after flying into washington from saint louis and had a swastika flag. authorities were searching his house overnight. negotiators are still scrambling to strike a deal to avert a catastrophic debt default. with the deadline now just eight days away. and house speaker kevin mccarthy says they're not even close to an agreement. abc's linsey watts has the latest out. negotiators will be back at it again today trying to hammer out a debt ceiling deal as the country edges closer to financial crisis. we could still finish this by june 1st. house speaker kevin mccarthy staying optimistic, but privately conceding to his republican members that they are nowhere near a deal yet. the white house insisting talks have been productive but won't point to

specific progress. look if everyone is working in good faith and recognizes that no one is going to get either side is going to get exactly what they want. we'll get it done. the stalemate is over federal spending. republicans want to roll it back and democrats do not. republicans also demanding that biden impose new work requirements for those receiving federal aid. the president equally firm in pushing for tax increases on the wealthiest americans and large companies amid erika has never failed to pay its debts, and the consequences would be disastrous . as the heads of military's joint chiefs is now sounding the alarm, warning a default would have an immediate and dramatic impact on readiness, with troops going unpaid, the potential here could be catastrophic for us. and i don't say that lightly. a default also means millions of americans may not be able to pay their bills on time. and it's very stressful. give me a heart attack with social security and other government benefits at risk, older americans would bear

the brunt of a default. i paid into social security and i paid into medicare and now they're trying to take it away. and worth noting, republicans raised the debt ceiling three times under president trump with no conditional spending cuts. andrew lindsay, thank you. former president trump is slamming the decision by a new york judge to set his criminal trial for next march. that means the hush money case will play out in the middle of primary season. trump appeared at the hearing remotely and was instructed not to schedule anything that conflicts with the trial. russia says it has killed dozens of people accused of launching a disputed attack along its border with ukraine. the russians claim ukraine was behind the assault in the belgorod region. ukraine says russians who oppose vladimir putin carried it out. now to uvalde, texas, marking one year since the shooting at robb elementary school. president biden will mark the day by calling for congressional action to address gun violence. meanwhile, one year later, many

of the victims families are still fighting for answers. here's abc's john quinones. it's been an entire year since a gunman at robb elementary school in uvalde, texas, killed 19 children and two teachers. today say many uvalde families say they're still struggling to heal. we feel that there's no accountability, pretty no justice for the fallen. 21 and i think that's what hurts the most . hurting because 12 months later, the investigation into the 77 minutes it took for law enforcement to breach the classroom and kill the attacker. that investigation remains in a sort of bureaucratic limbo. it just is like we're still investigating. we can't release this. we can't release that. sources tell abc news the investigation is examining the actions of every law enforcement officer who responded that day. and the decisions made in the critical first moments. clearly the failure right at the

beginning was, is the inability of the officers on the scene to continue to engage the subject until he was neutralized. period. first responder body cameras and hallway surveillance video, part of the investigative files obtained by abc news show law enforcement on the scene within minutes of the attack. and yet ultimately it still took well over an hour for officers to enter the classroom. no one performed the basic function that's needed in an incident such as this to take command and control over the situation. we deserve to know the full extent of what happened there, and we further deserve to get real accountability. the local district attorney's office is now waiting on a final report examining what went wrong from the texas department of public safety. she will then present the case to a grand jury for possible criminal charges. ultimately what we want is to know who was there, where they were and what they were doing. heavenly father, we give you
