america is back and booming acrdinriple is expected to be the busiest day for drivers with more than 37 million people driving to their destination this weekend. that's a 6% increase from last year. and airports will be just as busy. all the modes of transport nation are close to 2019 or pre-pandemic numbers. the one that is actually bigger than pre-pandemic is air travel. airlines are being tested once again, a potential shortage of air traffic controllers could cause a repeat of last year's travel chaos. it comes on the heels of a series of close calls on runways across the country. it shouldn't be on the runway. the mostrillionecent incident, two flights were forced to abort their landings in san francisco after a southwest airlines plane taxied across the wrong runway. still, officials say they are ready for the crowds. and tsa. s new rules for pre-check are expected to alleviate some of the delays on the ground. now,

the slow moving debt ceiling talks are headed in the right direction. they've all agreed there will be no default and it's time for congress to act now. the only way to move forward is with a bypass, an agreement. but top republicaneot there yet. we have still fundamental disagreements we have to resolve. this morning, multiple reports say that a deal is taking shape, one that would raise the debt limit for two years with some caps on federal spending unrelated to the military or veterans. the potential deal would also spare most domestic programs from significant cuts. negotiators now have less than a week to cement a final deal and get a bill through congress who were being held hostage. anxiety remains among those who would be most impacted by the projected june 1st default obligations are obligations i'm responsible for mine. the government should be responsible for theirs. people with disabilities, seniors and veterans would be the first to suffer if federal assistance payments are halted. if that

gets taken away, it is going to be catastrophic. without social security and snap, not only would we be homeless, my goodness, we wouldn't have money to buy food with. speaker kevin mccarthy has promised members three days to read a final debt ceiling bill so that time needs to be factored into any agreement reached. lawmakers seem destined to take this down to the wire, andrew. the deadline fast approaching. lindsey, thank you. now to the race for president. ron desantis campaign says it raised $8.2 in the 24 hours after he announced his candidacy. speaking with conservative radio host, the florida governor said the technical problems during his twitter rollout were due to the large number of people who were trying to listen. and he went after former president trump for his handling of the pandemic. he did great for three years, but when he turned the country over to fauci in march of 2020, that destroyed millions of people's lives. in response, trump called desantis young and inexperienced

. but desantis has campaign stops in three early voting states scheduled for next week. the founder of the far right militia group, the oath keepers , is starting an 18 year prison sentence. stewart rhodes was convicted of seditious conspiracy for his actions, leading up to the january 6th attack on the capitol. it's the longest sentence yet in a january 6th related case to more oath keepers convicted of other offenses will be sentenced today . now to an overhaul for a notoriously grueling course for the navy seals. the death of a sailor triggered an investigation which found widespread failures in the persistent problem of seal candidates using performance enhancing drugs. here's abc's andrea fujii. this morning, a new report reveals an unsafe and dangerous environment for navy seal recruits stemming from the death of a trainee after the so-called hell week. the nearly 200 page investigation details the grueling course that 24 year old kyle mullen successful, finished before he died last

year. i said, kyle, are you okay? are you hurt? are you in a hospital? and he just responded, don't worry'md. love you. and he hung up in the report, instructors were described as enforcers hunting the back of the pack to weed out weaker candidates and push the demands of the course to the far end of the acceptable spectrum. the report also found medical staff were poorly organized and poorly integrated and poorly led and put candidates at significant risk. after days of being ill, yet still training. mullen was found to have died of pneumonia and with no misconduct found on kyle's part, he was deemed to have died in the line of duty. this investigation shows that seaman mullen was not at fault. they found no performance enhancing drugs in his system. he did nothing wrong. but the navy's report found that some recruits were pushed to use performance enhancing drugs to cope with the program's requirements. this despite a drop in graduation rate. the program's commander refused to adjust it, telling

leaders zero is an okay number. hold the standard naval special warfare command is already implementing improvements to its training programs, including greater instructor oversight and training. updated medical policies and expanded authority to test for performance enhancing drugs. two top navy officers who headed the program were pulled from ei two weeks ago, and a number of personnel have been referred to navy legal authorities for potential punishment. the results of this investigation will now be turned over to the navy's legal command and punishment for those navy personnel could range from non-judicial punishment to court action. andrew rhiannon. andrea, thank you. now to the weather. a brief tornado near miami did plenty of damage in a short time on the ground. it tipped over a truck, injuring the driver and knocked down several trees, too. and a wild scene from northwest texas so-called spider lightning piercing a double rainbow. that area has had storms all week. it is time now for a look at your

year. tonight on abc. authorities are on the hunt for an alligator in northwest ohio. the gator was one of two discovered near a river three weeks ago. officials don't know how they got there. wildlife officers shot and killed one of the gators, the other one, about two feet long, is still missing. an 11 year old boy in mississippi is out of the hospital just days after being shot by police. a dairy and murray was shot in the chest saturday morning when officers responded to his 911 call. according to his mother, she told a darian to call for help after her ex-boyfriend came to their home. the officers ordered everyone out of the house with their guns drawn. a darien's mom says her son was shot as he followed the officer's directions. he was like, i don't ying. as on the ound.aid, you're notoingeng

to die. the officer who shot darian has been suspended. the murray family wants him fired and charged. the police department has not said what led to the shooting, and body camera footage has not been made public. now to the summer beach season officially here, but it's not always fun in the sun. experts are warning about a rise in shark attacks and strong rip currents. this morning. oh, god . oh, gosh. a reminder that a peaceful day at the beach can change quickly. people in south carolina this week caught in a dust, devil towels flying and for swimmers, there are new warnings. we've already this past weekend, we rescued about 160 people out of the water. the powerful winds along the east coast are creating hazardous conditions at beaches with dangerous rip currents possible from florida all the way to new jersey. it just happened so, so quickly. this family is sharing their story as a warning for others. relive the terrifying moment. five members of their group got caught in a rip current and dragged out to sea

before they were rescued. i remember looking at brandon and saying, they're out too far. i remember both of us trying to wave them and call them in. meanwhile on the west coast, you're getting water so close to the edge of the river that it's seeping up and it's making those edges that you would normally walk on unstable and they could. snowmelt in california has rivers flowing faster and stronger than usual. officials have closed off access to the most dangerous areas, some of which have already proven deadly. that was a very preventable tragedy. we're a four and an eight year old were drowned because they were led there by their parents. water conditions aren't the only threat to swimmers this weekend. a teenager in new jersey was bitten by a shark while surfing last sunday. and a connecticut woman had part of her leg bitten off by a shark while snorkeling in turks and caicos. the dive boat company releasing a statement overnight calling the attack extremely rare and unfortunate, adding that it was due to what is known in diving circles as a case of mistaken identity. it's believed a caribbean reef shark was
