holiday weekend in full swing. aaa says, as i mentioned, today is expected to be the busiest day for drivers. you have to hear that. they are estimating 37 million plus will be driving to their weekend destinations, putting us at a 6% increase over last year. that is still below pre-pandemic numbers in 2019. drivers, if you have not left the house yet, transportation experts say the best time to hit the road is before noon today. then, things will really start to pick up, with the worst window between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. whatever amount you might be sitting at the pump compared to last year will likely go toward your stay. a hotel data provider says the the average daily rate fortel wt short-term rentals like airbnb jumped to $316 last from a year ago.

ceiling. what do we know? jobina: under the potential deal that was first reported by "the new york times," the debt ceiling would be raised for two years while capping federal spending for the same period. this does not include spending related to veterans or the military. the proposal would also spare domestic programs from significant cuts. some people are still anxious about how a decision will affect them if no deal is reached by next week. people with disabilities, seniors, and veterans would be some of the first to feel the impact. pamela: social security and snap -- not only would there be homeless, we would not have money to buy food. jobina: a political analyst and retired congresswoman, jackie spears, shared her perspective. jackie: i think what is going to happen, because we are so close to the deadline, is that they will pass a modest lifting of the debt ceiling for a month, so that they can continue to

negotiate. they could do that by unanimous consent. jobina: the white house has not commented on the potential deal, but republican negotiators said things were going "slow." negotiations will continue into the week, and speaker mccarthy has promised lawmakers three days to review any deal. that needs to be factored into the timeline for the deal as well. kumasi: developing news and solano county, where vacaville's mayor is accused of refusing to recognize pride month. solano pride tweeted a statement that the comments came during a meeting on wednesday. the statement claims the mayor refused to raise the flag or make a proclamation of pride month. the reason was not released in the statement or from the mayor. in his statement, it reads in part, "i thought we had a productive, positive meeting regarding the importance of supporting the lgbtq community. here in vacaville, we are an inclusive and diverse community, and 100% support the rights of

all." reggie: as some u.s. retailers deal with pushback for commercials and merchandise supporting the lgbtq+ community, experts say this could be a common situation moving forward. the latest increase in anti-lgbtq rhetoric started with a cut of bud light after a partnership with a transgender influencer. more recently, target has removed some pride items after what they describe as intense backlash they say included violent confrontations with customers. tom is with equality california. tom: now is the time for lgbtq+ folks, but also our allies, corporate entities -- for everyone to step up and be visible in their support for our community. reggie: target stock lost more than $9 billion in market value in less than a week after pulling the pride products. it still has not specified which items it removed from some stores.

kumasi: welcome back. this is a scary story. terrifying moments on a plane in south korea when a passenger opened a door during flight. officials say multiple people trying to stop the man, but they could not. thankfully, the plane was able to land safely. the man was arrested. no one was seriously hurt. but several people did have to go to the hospital.

a moving vigil las vallejo, marking seven years since a teenage girl was kidnapped. to this day, she has not been found. she was snatched while walking to school in 2016. her family put on an event where she vanished on an overpass above interstate 780. solano county sheriff's detectives suspect 19-year-old fernando castro of taking her, but he died in a police shootout the day after she disappeared. her case is still open. a mississippi mother is to many answers after her 11-year-old son was shot by a police officer who was responding to an incident inside the child's home. she says her son called police so officers knew there was a child present. the initial incident had to do with her ex-boyfriend, who was reportedly being violent. it is not clear why the officer fired his gun at the child, or why the gun was even pointed at

him. his mom with a lot of questions. >> first, he was like, "come up with your hands up." at that moment is when my son came out. you are asking someone to come with your hands up, you are shooting. i don't understand. kumasi: the indianola police department has not commented on the incident and is saying they will not release the officer's body camera video. the officer has been suspended. reggie: governor newsom is showing an ambitious plan to transition to 100% clean energy. the government was at a power facility in richmond. the company will produce mobile batteries that generate clean energy, instead of traditional gas generators we are used to. california's goal is to have a 100% clean electrical grid by 2045. gov. newsom: we are moving from aspiration to implementation. there is practical reality,

at the san mateo bridge. it is busy but things are still moving at the limit. reggie: the aorney forbrowne's o file a wrongful death lawsuit. he was shot and killed a walgreen security guard last month after he was allegedly shoplifting. gloria: the attorney fothe fami will be filing a civil lawsuit, and plans to share more information today. this comes a day after his memorial service. yesterday was an emotional day for his loved ones. many turned out for the 24-year-old's memorial service at third baptist church in san francisco. brown's father saying there is hurt and disappointment. brown's death has deeply touched the community. some protested after d.a. brooke jenkins decided not to file charges against a security guard who shot and killed brown at the walgreens where brown was suspected of shoplifting. guard fired after he said that brown lunged at him, fearing he

would be stabbed. brown was found to be unarmed. this week, the california attorney general's office said it will review the case. the family attorney says he is planning to serve a wrongful owalgreensecy s fact at fault. >> i want justice. i don't care about the money. i want justice. erupted. it is unclear what was said. brown asked everyone to calm down, and things got back to order in less than 10 minutes. we will keep you updated on any new developments with this lawsuit.

meeting expectations. officials say just eight agencies are using the $2.4 billion center, and they are only seeing 35% to 40% of pre-pandemic use. to be honest, even pre-pandemic use was pretty low if you ever went there. and abc 7 insider talked to a trans bay official about what is not working. adam: the real challenge for operators in the coming years, as we struggle to get to a new normal -- san francisco, as you know more than most, has been about invention, innovation, and is continually changing. we are going through one of those change periods now, and it is hard and commercial property owners and transit providers. reggie: he says revenue is coming from other places. adam: we put in three restaurants, and at the end of last year, we opened a taproom that has become quite an evening destination. so our sales tax revenues have actually outpaced those of the rest of the city because of that

activation. reggie: they do have a very nice fitness sf there. transit experts and city leaders believe it will take at least two years to flush out the current downturn in the financial district, and they are saying -- no surprise -- dobson housing will be key to getting people to come back. kumasi: bart is turning to anime. bailey the goat is said to be inspired to reduce fire danger on properties. she is one of five new anime mascots for the transit agency, designed to promote public transportation use, especially among young writers, a growing demographic. >> if it gets people to ride bart more, that is great. it is a really good public transit system. honestly, i think the bigger sticking point is just safety. kumasi: a bay found 90% of respondents want to see more frequent cleaning. 79% would like to see better

code of conduct enforcement. 73% want more uniformed police on patrol. reggie: a vote on the a's moved to las vegas could happen as soon as next month. rob manfred said team owners will meet in mid june in new york. nevada's governor said legislators and the team reached a tentative agreement on a plan. the state legislature still has to vote. we have still not seen any renderings, although the plan is to build it where the tropicana is right now, on las vegas boulevard. one asked if the tree in -- if the team has any chance of staying in oakland, he said "ask oakland's mayor." kumasi: several subway restaurants around the area are accused of threatening and in some cases not paying underage workers. the department of labor investigation involves 14 locations owned by one franchisee, accused of hiring employees as young as 14. investigators say the owner bounced checks to employees,

pocketed tips, and required employees to work in unsafe conditions. an attorney tells abc 7 news agreement has been reached to rectify any violations. reggie: we are sharing the story of one sent has a veteran and his service dog, featured in a video that profiles of veterans struggling with ptsd, and how service dogs are helping them heal. after years of unsuccessful programs medications, he turned to operation freedom pause. -- they go to the gym, they do errands together -- they even graduated together. >> he is the person i talk to most in my life. it is good to have someone to give you unconditional love and a simple place where you can give that unconditional love back. reggie: gallegos says he hopes the documentary leads to more conversations around mental health, especially for veterans.
