the road to the skies and we begin with transportation correspondent gio benitez who starts us off from a control tower at newark airport. good morning, gio. even good morning to you. we are inside the new workstation operations center here at newark and it is very, very busy. these folks here at united airlines and managing every aspect of every single right here at the airport. you can see here we got a 360-degree view of the ramp. let's go ahead and show you what's happening at airports across the country right now because they have been packed since yesterday. the busiest day to fly. today will be a close second. today will be t be a big test fe summer travel season. so far, things are smooth. that's in large part because of the clear weather across much of the country. nearly 3.4 million expected to fly for the holiday. that's 11% more than last year, over 5% more than 2019 if you can believe it before the pandemic. right now, we're not seeing very many cancelations or delays. that is good news but no matter

missing to make a deal with house republicans to avert a catastrophic default. >> president biden: made clear time and again defaulting on our national debt is not an option. >> rachel: with just six days to go, time is running out. members leaving town for business as negotiators prepared to work through the holiday weekend. >> still some outstanding negotiations. have directed our teams to solve this problem. >> rachel: republicans are demanding deeper spending cuts in exchange for lifting the debt limit including limiting spending for federal aid programs like food stamps which is turning out to be a major sticking point. for democrats, that's a nonstarter. because i'm not supporting that. >> rachel: conservative republicans are calling on mccarthy to not back away from the g.o.p. demands. what is your method to speaker mccarthy on the ski mexico hold the line. we should hold firm and actually lead the country. >> rachel: though the deal has not been finalized, sources say

the closer we get to the tune first deadline without a deal, the bigger threat to the stock market and the broader economy. the doubted edged down a little bit congested, closed lower for the fifth day in a row. traders tell me they are still optimistic there will be a last-minute deal to allow the government to keep paying its bills. here are the most immediate risk to the economy and your wallet right now. stitch wants that it might damage the u.s. credit rating. that could force the government to pay higher rates to borrow money, than overall borrowing costs could go up, for example for a new market for your credit card. if the government runs out of cash, it might pass payments for federal workers and it might have to delay checks due in early june for social security, medicare or veterans benefits. analysts say that ultimately those payments will be made even a short delay could affect millions of americans if you are worried about a delay checks, now is a good time to look at your own budget and prioritize your own bills due at the start of the month.

or a police officer who was responding to a call for help. because he was like i don't want to die. i thought he are saying while i was on the ground, i said you're not going to die, baby. >> steve: the police department is in combating this money but the mississippi bureau of investigations confirmed that the child received significant injuries and had to be transported to a local hospital. the 11 year old senior this morning and is likely to be alive. he had a collapsed lung and a cut on his liver and was treated in the icu. >> he had nothing in his hand so we could not have perceived threat. >> steve: it was a report of a fight in the home that led to the cultural police in the first place. the issue allegedly was with the mom's ex-boyfriend who was violent with her before and showed up around 4:00 a.m. her son was woken up by the fighting and called 911. she says her ex-boyfriend was at the back of the home when she opened the door in the chaos and the officer shot her son. >> was he expecting the kid to come around the corner? i don't know, but there's protocol when kids are around.

in turks and caicos that left a connecticut woman seriously injured, part of a like button. authorities say the 22 year old tourist was snorkeling with a friend at a dive company when she was attacked. the dive company calling the incident extremely rare and unfortunate thing the captain took action on the victim was extracted from the ocean and dispatched in the ambulance and 15 minutes, saving them from a potentially life-threatening situation. she has since been transported to a hospital in the united states. this is the latest in a string of recent encounters as we approach memorial day weekend in the busy summer travel season. experts say you should always be vigilant in the water. if you're swimming and you do spot a shock, to turn your back on it but keep your eyes on it. come to get out of the water. they stressed when it encounters like are not common. according to the international shark fire, last year there were 57 unprovoked attacks and five deaths worldwide. because in general, these are very, very rare occurrences. sometimes you'll get a view in a row and it feels like there's a

report makes clear that the selection process to become a seal had become far too risky with a near perfect storm of institutional failures. it is a devastating report, highly critical of navy seal training, the review found that in recent years, the selection process had grown to unacceptable levels with little medical oversight, poor leadership, and overzealous and an experienced instructors focused on weeding out candidates, hunting the back of the pack rather than trying to foster teamwork. one commander blaming this generation of seal candidates for having less mental toughness. the review followed the death of candidate kyle mullen in february of 2022. the former yale football captain collapsed and died just hours after successfully completing so-called hell week.

his medical check after the course showed his lungs were deemed abnormal and his legs so swollen he was sent to the barracks in a wheelchair. once at the barracks while struggling to breathe, there were no medical personnel available on site, and one fellow candidates finally found a duty officer, the report says the provider insisted wasn't needed. >> from our perspective, many people were involved, many people try to cover up, committed wrongdoings and accountability has not come. we've been waiting for a year and have almost at this point since my brother passed and no one has gotten in trouble. even the navy has made changes to the course already and multiple navy personnel maybe subject to accountability but ts in the report is long and detailed to include improved screening, training, and evaluation of instructors, broader testing for performance-enhancing drugs and more safety and medical training to help support candidates who

might be at medical risk. >> we want to make sure people are getting adequate care and not being left to die on the ground. we just need medical to look at these guys. it's utterly pathetic that they weren't being taken care of. >> martha: the head of navy special warfare command released a statement saying his command will enact or recommendations to make training safer to honor the legacy of kyle mullen. you definitely hope that they will do that. thank you. we are going to turn now to the terrifying scare in the air when a man actually opened a plane door midflight. first passengers had to be rushed to the hospital after learning and gio is back with the latest this morning. good morning to you. >> gio: good morning again. this was an asiana plane with over 100 people on board. police there in south korea say a 33 year old passenger open the emergency exit door about

850 feet above ground right after the pilot made that built-in announcement that the plane was about to land. the passenger we are told was traveling alone. police have not said why he did it but did say there were no signs he'd been drinking. once the plane landed safely, 12 people were taken to the hospital for respiratory issues. the passenger was arrested, of course, and if convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison. unbelievable. thank you so much for that update. >> not a rip current warnings are so many people had to the beaches this memorial day weekend. chief national correspondent matt gutman joins us with one family's close call and how to keep your family safe. matt, good morning. >> matt: rip currents trigger more water rescues than any other shoreline has done the best way to survive one is with the knowledge that a rip current might pull you out but it's not going to put you under. we mention the smith family just now. they got lucky. a couple of servers helped

month and this morning, we're going to check in on that hero that we first introduced you to in january on good morning america right after disarming the mass shooter that came into his family's dance hall during lunar new year celebrations. let's take a look at his story. ♪ >> reporter: amid the bright lights and sparkling gowns, the dance floor is alive at lai lai ballroom, a stark contrast to lunar new year celebrations, 11 people gunned down, the rampage ending when the shooter was confronted by 26-year-old brandon tsay. what was going through your mind as it was going on? >> i realized i needed to get the weapon away from him or everyone would have died. >> reporter: back at the ballroom his grandmother built more than 30 years ago, a hero. >> you're not very comfortable with the word, are you? >> it's a new word for me.

hero, a lot to uphold once called that. >> reporter: those who know brandon the best, know it isn't the first time. when brandon was 19, his mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. brandon dropped everything, including college to help care for her. she passed away in 2017. >> she had a huge responsibility to the studio at the time and i felt that it was within my duty to uphold that responsibility for her. >> reporter: on the night of the shooting, he was working late, so other employees could celebrate lunar new year with their families. >> really, really damaged our community for a while. >> reporter: it hurt your community. >> interview: yeah. they are always there for us, when my mom passed, they were there for me and brandon. some of those people were killed that night. >> reporter: have you asked yourself what your mom would have thought of your actions that night? >> interview: said don't do something so stupid.

help save someone's life or your own. harvey weber's first day back to work had him in tears. the staff at the hospital celebrating the former emt, saving his own life after experiencing a massive stroke. >> i'm blessed, very lucky. >> reporter: it wasn't luck but good judgment that saved his life on the golf course in february 2022. the 52-year-old bent down to pick up a golf ball and woke up next to his cart. >> interview: i couldn't stand up and realized i couldn't move my arm or legs. >> reporter: his training as an emt kicking in. he reached for his buddy. >> interview: i said bro, i'm having a stroke. call 911. >> reporter: he did but what ultimately confirmed the stroke, the call he attempted on his iphone. >> interview: i take out my phone and look at my face, it doesn't recognize my face and doesn't open up. >> reporter: a sign of stroke, facial droop where facial nerves are damaged in the brain, when

facial recognition wouldn't unlock it, he knew he had to get to the hospital fast. he had a dangerous stroke when an artery in the brain bursts. they only account for 13% of strokes but can be deadly. >> interview: harvey's life was saved because he got to the hospital quickly to get treatment. with stroke, minutes matter. >> reporter: harvey spent a month unconscious and two months in rehab. today he's back at work, using a cane and grateful beyond measure to be here. >> interview: he has come so far. i have not met anyone that has had this type of stroke and made their way back to a normal life with their family. >> interview: if this is my new normal, then i'll adjust to it. i'm fortunate. >> reporter: doctors say harvey's recovery is not done yet and think he will get stronger as his brain heals. he got medical attention quickly because he knew the signs of a
