firefighters who had some advice heading into the holiday weekend. >> fire always wants to go up. reporter: several crews in san mateo county responded to a two-acre visitation fire off of northbound 280, south of 92 on friday. sky 7 captured video of the hillside charred black by the flames. >> it was moving uphill and towards crestview drive. we know there are some homes on crestview drive so i was worried about some structure defense. reporter: san mateo county had a drone on standby but used information from calfire's helicopter to strategize their attack. >> we can see the whole fire from where we are standing. we will use whatever type of aerial aircraft we can use. reporter: the fire was small. smoke to be seen for miles. a reminder that more fires are just around the corner with summer on the way. >> it was a cool and somewhat moist day and we had a 1.5 acre

fire here on a day like today. with the hotter days, it will be the worst. we careful out there. reporter: the battalion chief said don't leave barbecues or campfires unattended. >> stay smart with whatever you are going to be doing out there. it will be hot. just because of storms and rain doesn't mean that we are officially out of the drought. reporter: officials reported no structure damage or injuries from the last -- grass fire. the cause is still under investigation. lauren martinez, abc7news. dan: the risk of wildfires and rising construction costs have forced one of california's biggest insurers out of the homeowner business. the wall street journal says state farm won't sell anymore new home insurance policies in california, effective tomorrow. existing home insurance will not be affected. if you have coverage, you will be glad to know that. inflation has been a problem for home and car insurers across the

country. many have posted losses as they seek approval for rate increases to catch up with the higher cost . here is good news. california's rolling blackouts may be a thing of the past. that's according to energy experts. the states energy commission says january winter storms brought more hydroelectric power compared to last year. the power grid reached its maximum limit in the middle of a 10 day heat wave last september. the grid hit a historic record of 52,000 megawatts which led to a call for residents to conserve energy. experts say the improved hydro conditions produced 3000 more megawatts of backup storage this year so we are in better shape and they don't expect that electricity failures to happen the season because of the increase. >> i'm happy to let you know that the summer outlook is looking better than we anticipated. dan: last rolling back out -- blackouts were during 2020. ama: this is a big getaway

weekend. listen up. one country will be a hotspot according to aaa. a lot of traffic on 80 for those making the trip to napa. expect a slow trip on tuesday morning when traffic is expected to be 77% of normal. adding to the traffic in wine country this weekend, bottlerock. the festival started today and continues through sunday. there's a diverse lineup of musicians. tomorrow's headliners are lizzo and aranda ran. sunday will feature the red-hot chili peppers. tickets are sold out but you can try to get them through the online exchange. dan: san francisco international airport. flying is definitely back. yesterday, more people past through the airports than on the same day in 2019. it was the busiest day since the day before thanksgiving in that same year. if you are waiting to get away this weekend, not a bad time to hit the road.

monday, the worst time is between noon and 3:00. tuesday, but between four and 6:00. ama: we are committed to building a better bay area. we are keeping a close eye on public transportation. bart and muni have said that we could see a transportation death spiral because of drastic cuts if they don't get funding. tim johns asked some key leaders if proposals working their way through the legislature would solve the problem. reporter: amid the growing concern about the state of downtown san francisco, a key component of its recovery is increasingly at risk. public transit agencies like bart and muni have said they are running out of money and fast. now some say current legislative proposals in sacramento won't solve the issue. >> if we don't act now, we will see horrible service cuts and a downward spiral for the systems. reporter: after taking a massive hit during the pandemic, ridership has been slow to recover.

the transit agencies have been surviving off of federal money. by 2025, bart projects that cash will run out. a possibility that many fear could send them over a fiscal cliff and dramatically hit services for commuters as soon as this year. >> i found it very convenient to get from one place to the other. it would definitely impact me. reporter: it's not just cuts to public transit agencies that officials are worried about. if services are slashed, it could have an impact on the bay area's economy. local political leaders have said the region's economic recovery is directly linked to having a strong public transportation system. if service cuts were enacted, they would hit the most honorable members of our community the hardest. >> they can't get to work or school. they can't get to the doctor or supermarket. reporter: a renewed push is happening asking the state to step in and help. a plea that we can't afford to overlook. >> we have created a plan along

with the metropolitan transportation commission. it doesn't use the general fund. the state can afford it. reporter: tim johns, abc7news. ama: minority riders would be hurt the most by severe cuts. 67% of its writers are nonwhite. those who don't own a car would be affected as well. 44% of its writers fall into this category. low income commuters would take a hit. people who make less than $50,000 account for one third of bart writers. 7% of its writers have a disability. dan: the family of the man and killed by a security guard at a san francisco walgreens has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. relatives of benko brown are suing walgreens. the contracted secure the company and the guard. the lawsuit claims the guard was unfit and on edge and that brown's shoplifting at the store upset the guard. the lawsuit claims walgreens and kingdom protected services, the

security company, ordered security to be more aggressive, causing the confrontation. san francisco's district attorney has opted not to file charges against the security guard. san francisco mayor london breed is firming up her budget plans to increase public safety in the city. she visited with small retail stores around know he valley today. the mayor acknowledged more help is needed to keep business owners and residents safe. the mayor says her budget will put at least 220 police officers on the ground over the next two years along with 22 civilian support positions. she wants more accountability for fentanyl dealers. >> i know people want to see something happen now. something is happening now. it's just not happening as fast as people want it to happen. i understand that. dan: the mayor says there will be reductions across various departments in the city to pay

for the heightened security. she says opioid settlement money is helping to fund public safety measures. you can check out crime statistics where you live. we've put this interactive neighborhood safety tracker on our website. there is data for san francisco, oakland, and san jose. we are working to add more cities as well. you will find not available on our website. ama: three alameda county employees are facing felony criminal charges tonight. they come from the public accountability unit created by pamela price. two sheriff's deputies charged with falsifying records in connection with a suicide at the jail in 2021. in a separate case, juvenile institutional officer the cober alice is accused of performing sex acts on a minor she met when he was in custody at the juvenile justice center. dan: only the abc7news i team was there today as federal agents fanned out across martinez to interview residents about a chemical release from a

nearby refinery. the i team has learned that the fbi and epa have started a criminal and civil investigation into what happened last thanksgiving night. about 10 groups of agents, some from as far away as honolulu, went door-to-door. they declined the interview but they did confirm that an investigation is now underway. residents were certainly surprised to have the fbi knocking at their door. >> i've never heard of that. it's interesting. >> it was a surprise. dan: as much as 24 tons of ash rained down on cars and homes after the release from the martin refining company. the agents tell the i team, the fact-finding has just begun here. martinez refining company did not return our request for comment. ama: the details on a wild plot to kill the queen 40 years ago during her only visit to the bay area. dan: the anniversary of the opening of the golden gate bridge. what do you think that iconic

ama: the fbi released documents about a plot to kill queen elizabeth during her visit to san francisco 40 years ago. the threat was made in a call to an sfpd officer. at the time, it was popular with simple just sympathize her's of the irish republican army. the caller claimed his daughter had been killed in northern ireland. he said he would drop an object off the golden great bridge onto the yacht or try to kill her when she visited yosemite. the documents did not indicate whether any arrests were made. live look tonight at capitol hill where lawmakers still have not reached a deal on the debt ceiling. president biden is optimistic that lawmakers are very close to reaching an agreement after a small reprieve. the treasury secretary now expects the u.s. will run out of

money to pay its bills by june 5. if a deal is not reached in time, it could affect social security benefits and military paychecks. >> very optimistic. i hope we will have some evidence tonight. >> it's crunch time. we know it's not easy. we are going to make sure. we are not just trying to get an agreement. we are trying to get something that's worthy of the american people. ama: republican negotiators say they are hopeful a deal will be reached this weekend. dan: leaders have told lawmakers to be prepared to return to capitol hill immediately if a deal is struck. we will keep you posted on that. a milestone for the crown jewel of san francisco and one of the most famous structures on the planet. 86 years ago tomorrow, the iconic golden gate bridge open to the public. it's the one thing that everyone who visits the bay area always wants to see. tonight, i want to take a deep dive into our priceless

treasures to see what it's actually worse. the golden gate bridge opened on may 27, 1937 in the middle of the great depression under budget and ahead of schedule. it took five years to build and cost $35 million price tag to build. that's an astounding amount of money in those days. the day it opened, 200,000 people walked across the bridge, paying a $.25 toll. today, roughly 112,000 vehicles to reverse the golden gate every day. most paying a total of nearly nine dollars. i met with a good friend of mine at the bridge that he knows an awful lot about. you have one of those strange jobs. you are able to put value on things that we never seem to be interested in fixing value to like the golden gate bridge. tell me a little bit about that job and the challenges of it. >> it's a fun job. i've been doing it for a long time.

i've praised assets that nobody would think of ever appraising. like atlanta airport or the alaskan pipeline or the golden gate bridge. dan: this is one of the most iconic structures in the world. why is it important to be able to put a value on it? >> as taxpayers, we pay taxes every day. we work hard for those taxes. part of those taxes is going to infrastructure like this. we know what at&t is worth by the second. how come we don't know what assets like the golden gate bridge or the brooklyn bridge are worth. we should know. we have a right to know as a taxpayer. dan: what is that information used for typically? >> that information could be used for accounting, insurance, or just basic public awareness. dan: what criteria do you use? >> there are three things whenever you are evaluating something. how much money it makes, how much assets like it might be going for, like how you appraise

a house. or the t would cost to rebuild today. dan: given the work that you did, what is it worth? >> today? 10 to $12 billion. dan: he says that takes into account not just the hard costs of rebuilding it but its value as a tourist attraction, a commuter link, and its role in commerce transporting goods. the golden gate bridge, 86 years old tomorrow. ama: sea otters could make a huge return to the bay area sonoma coast. according to this san francisco chronicle, local politicians are considering bringing the animals back to the habitat. they would be really reintroduced through local coastal programs. see urchins damage hundreds of miles of sonoma's coast this past decade. sea otters eat see your chins which leaders believe will restore balance if they return.

they region during the 1800s. several couples got a special wedding backdrop today. they tied the knot at the summit of mount diablo. ceremonies there only happened twice a year for a handful of couples. it's one of the highest points in the bay area. >> it's a beautiful venue. it's a state park. it turned out to be our venue. i 100%, being able to look out and see the scenery. no matter what, it will be a big point in our lives. >> i feel so fortunate to be able to have this opportunity and take advantage of it. ama: this couple says despite the clouds and cool weather, it still turned out to be a perfect day. dan: congratulations to the class of 2020 three. san francisco state university held its commencement ceremony tonight. graduates and families returned to oracle park to take their walk across the stage. the event ended with a special fireworks show to celebrate the

new graduates. congratulations to them. ama: we are on our way to the holiday weekend. sandhya: it's looking fantastic. let me show you some live pictures from our tower cameras, from emeryville to san jose. overcast skies and it's cloudy, up from zephyr cove. we will bring in some sunshine tomorrow. right now, live doppler 7 is tracking the gray skies not just near the coast but well across the bay as well. far inland, places like fairfield still clear but not for long as we head toward tomorrow morning. what has kept us cooler than average? even today, temperatures in the 50's to low 70's. this big trough has been parked out west. it puts a -- it's pushing east a bit. we will bump up those temperatures a few degrees away from the coastline tomorrow. another trough comes in, causing a drop in the temperatures on sunday. here's a look at what happened
