tara campbell joins us live in the newsroom to explain a new sense of urgency in the fight for rights for the lgbtq plus community. tara. >> yeah, dion, the executive director of san francisco pride, says the stakes are high this year as the lgbtq lgbt plus community continues to come under attack across the nation. and while the party will certainly go on, so too will preparations to continue the fight for the rights of the entire community. >> be it can't be business as usual. obviously we're under attack all over this country from the queer community, especially the trans community. >> suzanne ford is the executive director of san francisco pride, and she's referring to the nearly 500 bills being tracked by the aclu across the nation, taking aim at lgbtq plus rights. >> we shouldn't take anything for granted this year. you know, it's more important than ever that you come out. pride weekend and you make a statement. she says this year's celebration

will be met with some serious work rally ing people from across the country in preparation to continue the fight. so many states are enacting anti lgbtq laws that we haven't really had a chance to coalesce and say this is how we're going to fight it together . >> and that's why san francisco pride is planning its first human rights summit. what we want is everyone to come together on one day, focus the media attention on what we're fighting, but also to learn from each other. hosting activists, lawmakers and more. >> we're going to be bringing people in from florida, from utah, from different states in the country where they're fighting these fights on the ground. we're going to bring them here and we're all going to be able to speak to each other about how we carry on that fight. >> it is a little scary to know what's going on in the world, but i believe if we just stay united and stay into our beliefs, we can be fine. >> i think it's very important to, you know, come together. i think it's very important as a community. >> michael estrada lives in los

angeles and says despite some fears, he'll be back to san francisco late june to celebrate pride with his friend. >> and i don't think we should mute it and like stop any of the fun and the celebration for it because it's our month. it's our month. why not have a great time ? >> and suzanne ford agrees, says the party will go on. >> we'll have a great time that weekend. but we want to make sure that you understand and how important it is to support pride and to support our community so we can do both at one time. now, suzanne ford was also quick to note that support from outside the lgbt q plus community is imperative at this time. >> calling on for calling on what she called moderate supporters to go all in and show up and show solidarity. dion. all right, tara campbell, many thanks. >> moving on to developing news on the debt ceiling. president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy are talking about a deal to avoid a potentially catastrophic and historic default. the president said

today he and the speaker agreed that the only way forward was bipartisan can and both men agreed this was a compromise. abc's andrew dymburt has details of the deal. after weeks of contentious negotiations, president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy finally reaching an agreement on saturday to raise the debt limit. >> it takes a threat of catastrophic default off the table, protects our hard earned and historic economic recovery. and the agreement also represents a compromise, which means no one got everything they want. but that's the responsible 8-80 of governing. sources tell abc news the budget deal keeps most federal spending roughly flat next year, raising it by 1% in 2025. >> defense spending would increase, also included new work requirements, putting the limits on how long some americans up to age 54 can receive food assistance. sources say the bill would also preserve social security, medicaid and veterans benefits. mccarthy calling the agreement good for the american public, saying he's confident

the bill will pass with a majority in his conference supporting it. >> i think at the end of the day, people can look together to be able to pass this in the house and the senate together to sign it and send it to the president. >> sources tell abc news a small group of republicans have already returned to the capitol to try and drum up support. but hard line conservatives like gop virginia congressman bob good have accused mccarthy of too many concessions, writing, quote, no one claiming to be a conservative would justify a yes vote. president biden is looking to get moderate democrats on board, which will be crucial if there isn't enough gop support. >> the speaker and i made clear from the start that the only way forward was a bipartisan agreement. i strongly urge both both chambers to pass that agreement. >> the first test of this new legislation will be on wednesday when the house votes. if it passes there, it could head to the senate the same day. andrew dymburt, abc news, new york. >> former president donald trump has opened up a big lead in california's march 2024 presidential primary. republican

that is a new poll released by the institute of governmental studies at uc berkeley shows the former president ahead of his nearest rival, florida governor ron desantis, by 18 percentage points. among republicans likely to vote in next year's primary. three months ago, that poll showed desantis ahead of trump. now trump is at 44% support and desantis has a distant 26. no other republican received more than 4% support, and the former president did well with strongly conservative republicans. men non-college grads and voters ages 50 to 64 were. yet another overcast and great day with below average temperatures. some people even experienced rain today. what exactly is going on with the weather? jr still got some answers. they are: pouring afternoon on this holiday in clear lake.

after seeing that rain. you are the in-house weather expert, tell us what we can expect the rest of memorial day weekend. spencer: let me show you what is going on right now in the area of exceptional weather today up around deer lake and ukiah where they had thunderstorm and downpour earlier this evening. now just a little moisture, not hitting the ground, so things have called down there significantly. what triggered that is this low-pressure system over the pacific northwest that destabilize the atmosphere and tapped into some of that moisture hanging around. here is what we can expect going in to memorial day. widespread clouds, patchy drizzle overnight. lingering gray in the sky tomorrow early, but some sunshine can be found inland, complete accuweather 7-day forecast with a look at temperatures a little bit later.

flow, and tapped into the moisture in the atmosphere and the result was thunderstorms. they didn't last very long, but they did occur in lake county, especially around lakeport and other parts of the county. we are looking at surface wind speeds across the bay area, quite light at the moment. the strongest wind speeds fairfield up to 22 miles per hour. then the 24 hour temperature change, sort of a mixed bag. some locations in the north bay two degrees cooler than they were yesterday at this time. other locations are a degree or two milder. here is the live view from the rooftop camera. current temperature, 53 in san francisco. mid to upper 50's in oakland, palo alto, 54 at half moon bay. from emeryville, a few clouds, those will grow more prominent during the overnight hours.

53 in santa rosa and mid-50's in napa, fairfield, concord, livermore. one more view looking toward the bay bridge, you can see moisture in the atmosphere allowing the lights in oakland to reflect in the atmosphere, so it seems brighter than it really is. these are the forecast headlines. widespread clouds and patchy drizzle. lingering gray conditions will start the day tomorrow, but we will see some sunshine in the inland areas. don't let the gray mislead you, we will have some bright spots. then we can expect a sunnier and slightly warmer pattern near the end of the week. this is overnight, increasing clouds, counterclockwise circulation because of that upper-level low. there will be some patchy drizzle as well. mid day, sunnier skies, especially away from the coast line. overnight lows, low 50's. near 70 around the bay shoreline.

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. dion: war in ukraine. that country is ramping up a counteroffensive offensive against russian forces while russia launched the largest drone attack since the start of the war. we were on the ground tonight in ukraine. ukrainian capital before dawn. russia's biggest drone attack on kyiv so far in this war.

54 iranian made explosive drones raining down, ukraine claiming it shot almost all of them down with one person killed. that attack is the commander of ukraine's armed forces signaling any video a major offensive is ready to begin. we are inside a command center in eastern ukraine. this brigade is getting intelligence, we can show you inside a reconnaissance area of this where there are drones with live feeds down onto the front lines. these soldiers real-time view showing us how ukraine is stepping up artillery strikes to test and weaken the russian lines. i have just seen a s you can see the smoke coming up. the colonel's men are operating near the ruined city of backman. is it fair to say that the preparations for the counteroffensive are well underway?

coming as stupid as that. dion: at least three people are facing charges. one alleged gang member will be charged with murder when he is released from the hospital. all the shooters have been apprehended and police say there is no threat to the community. new details, a man accused of opening a plane's emergency exit door was arrested today. he told police he opened the door because he felt suffocated and wanted to get off. it happened friday during a flight in south korea. officials say usually an aircraft doors cannot be opened on a flight. they say the man succeeded because that plane was at 700 feet, preparing to land. the u.s. surgeon general is calling for more research to determine the extent of mental health impacts on young people because of social media. he says kids ages 10 to 19 are at a sensitive time and at risk if they spend too much time on
