violence and it was happening all across the country this morning. nine people, including children, are recovering after this shooting in hollywood, florida, capping off a violent memorial day weekend. i was laying down having a good time at the beach and all of a sudden i heard like pop, pop, pop about 6 or 7 shots. everybody started running. officials say around 6:30 p.m, gunfire erupted on the hollywood beach boardwalk. a camera captured the chaos as shots rang out. people running to safety, some even racing into the water to escape the gunfire. there was multiple shots at this place called margaritaville. five adults and four children were shot. a one year old among those hit. video shows police and bystanders treating victims. a spokesperson for the local health care system says all are in stable condition. an eyewitness says he saw several young men fighting in front of the stores lining the boardwalk when one pulled out a gun and started shooting. preliminary

investigation reveals that this was there was an altercation between two groups that resulted in gunfire. the shooting was one of many over the holiday weekend in columbus, ohio. at least five people were shot at a block party. three teenagers are expected to survive. and in chicago, police say at least 47 people were shot over the weekend and nine of them fatally. new mayor brandon johnson admits there is a lot of work to do. this weekend. what you saw on display is that everybody recognizes is that it's going to take all of us to unite this city and to build a better, stronger, safer city. as for that scene on the boardwalk in south florida overnight, there is still a heavy police presence as the investigation continues us. now to the apartment building collapse in davenport, iowa. a woman was pulled from the rubble last night. more than 24 hours after a section of the building came crashing down. her rescue came just as crews were preparing to demolish the building this morning. a ninth person found alive in the rubble after an apartment building partially

collapsed in davenport, iowa, possibly delaying plans to demolish the building later today near. new video shows rescuers pulling a woman to safety last night. more than 2 hours after a section of the building sheared away. at this time, the building is structurally unsound. it's believed two more people may still be in the building. a woman tells the quad-city times her cousin is missing. the newspaper reports police pinged his phone to his apartment before it shut off. and another family at the scene says they believe their loved one is still inside. yesterday, officials cleared the building for demolition, saying they believe the building was empty after crews spent hours searching because of the concern for life by our first responders to get in the building. knowing that that building was unsafe to help folks because of that, they saved lives. but now plans to demolish the building today are reportedly under evaluation. hey, y'all, just standing there.

meanwhile, protesters are gathering at the scene, angry over the city's plan to demolish the building. just two days after the collapse, calling it a hasty decision. the cause of the collapse, meanwhile, is under investigation. city officials had ordered the owners to make fixes to the building after a string of complaints. resident linnea hoover recently took this picture after she saw bricks falling during the repair work. what were some of the problems that you were seeing? the big one is leakage, plumbing, leakage, sewage leakage. in the building. there would be giant holes in the hallway where water would leak through. there's no word on the condition of the woman rescued last night, but witnesses say she was waving out of a window. breaking overnight in russia, a drone attack in moscow damaged at least two residential buildings. no one has claimed responsibility, but the russian defense ministry says eight ukrainian drones reached moscow, calling it a terror attack. russian officials say five of the drones were shot down. there were no reports of deaths or injuries. hours earlier, ukrainian authorities accused russia of launching an

attack on kyiv, firing a barrage of missiles during the day, forcing children to run for cover. as abc's tom soufi burridge reports, some military targets were also hit. and ukraine admitting those russian missiles did destroy a ukrainian ammunition depot and damage an airstrip and several aircraft. but our thanks to tom there. ukraine says its air defenses shot down all of the missiles fired at kyiv and this morning, more than 20 drones were intercepted. congress has six more days to get that debt ceiling deal across the finish line. with the house poised to vote on the bill tomorrow, president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy are racing to win over lawmakers. abc's justin finch has the latest from washington. justin, good morning. good morning, andrew. and there are early signs the bill may not win support from some hard line republicans and progressive democrats in the house. and those may not be the only snags this deal faces in congress. from the white house to capitol hill, a joint effort to win bipartisan backing for the debt

ceiling compromise brokered by house speaker kevin mccarthy and president joe biden. well, i feel very good about it. i've spoken with a number of the members. i spoke to mcconnell, i spoke to a whole bunch of people. and it feels good. the president sounding confident after calls to congress members , including senate republican leader mitch mcconnell, a white house official telling abc news the administration is working the phones with senior staff and cabinet officials, calling more than 60 house democrats since saturday. at the capitol, speaker mccarthy working to whip up republican support. i think it's good for the american public. you're going to have republicans and democrats be able to move this to the president. the president agreed with this bill as well. but already at least ten house republicans are leaning towards or are planning to vote no, arguing the bill doesn't cut enough federal spending and progressive democrat leader pramila jayapal worries the cuts are too deep. the 99 page deal would suspend the $31 trillion

debt ceiling until january first, 2025, and lock in new non-defense spending restraints. the agreement claws back $30 billion in covid funding rescinds $20 billion of irs funding expands work requirements for some americans on food assistance. ends the federal student loan payments pause in august, and preserves social security, medicaid and veterans benefits. the bill does not include tax increases for the wealthiest americans or big corporations, which democrats wanted. a tight timeline now for congress, the deal is on track for a house vote wednesday and then off to the senate, where it could find friction. the deadline, june 5th, when the treasury secretary warns the us is at risk of default. andrew, watching that deadline closely for us. justin, thank you. texas attorney general ken paxton could learn his fate by the end of this summer. the gop led state senate set paxton's

impeachment trial to begin. no later than august. house members delivered 20 articles of impeachment against paxton, including bribery. his wife is among the senators who could serve as a juror unless she recuses herself. two inmates escape from a mississippi jail just weeks after four others broke out of the same facility. officials at the raymond detention center say they noticed michael lewis and joseph spring were gone during a head count yesterday. lewis is back in custody, but spring was missing. two of the men who escaped in april were captured. one was killed in a shootout and one was found dead in a car. the prime suspect in the disappearance of an american teenager is recovering from an alleged prison, beating urine. vandersloot is awaiting extradition to the us in an extortion case tied to the disappearance of natalee holloway in 2005. according to his lawyer, vandersloot was beaten in a peruvian prison where he's serving a 28 year sentence in the murder of a peruvian college student. well, smoke from wildfires in nova scotia, canada, is drifting into

concerns at pools and beaches. here's abc's derrick dennis. this morning many beaches and pools are open after the holiday weekend, but some cities are looking at an uncertain season ahead due to a shortage of lifeguards. new york city facing its worst shortage on record. boston offering hiring bonuses of $1,200. and in seattle, not enough. lifeguards mean several city beaches and pools are closed. he had to be in there a long time just this weekend, a sign of how vital lifeguards are in new jersey, a teen drowned in a strong rip current at an unattended beach by bystanders frantically trying to save him. they all made a line with their hands to try to extend to get this kid out and they pulled him out. the us lifesaving association says drowning is the fifth leading cause of accidental death in the country. among those 1 to 14, it's the second leading cause behind car accidents. it's why cities are desperate to recruit lifeguards . new york city even simplified

its notoriously difficult swim test and is offering bonuses of $1,000. phenix and austin are also offering monetary incentives, experts say, to fix this long term, the country needs to get young people excited about lifeguarding. at an early age and offer them a career path for word. imagine learning this life skill from someone who looks like you, who've been where you are, who's shaped like you. paula ana lamonier started a new york city swim group called black people will swim. many of the attendees getting certified as lifeguards . at least it's a start. city officials say they've had trouble hiring lifeguards because of the pay 16 to $20 an hour in many areas competing with other jobs that simply pay more. rhiannon and drew, our thanks to derek dennis for that coming up, video of a brave dog scaring off a bear. also ahead, an abc news exclusive with the 11 year old boy who was shot by police after he called for help. what he says happened before the what he says happened before the shooting

treatment. we are back now with a terrifying scene at a rodeo in australia. dozens of people were line dancing when a bull charged through the crowd sending them running for their lives. several people were injured, including a five year old girl who was hospitalized with head injuries after she was trampled. the family of a tennessee woman missing for more than three weeks is hoping someone can help them find her. nikki alcarez vanished on her way to california with her boyfriend, tyler stratton. relatives say the couple got into an altercation in new mexico. were released from police, shows her with a black eye. her sister says she spoke with alcarez after the incident. her eye was already turning black and you could tell she was beat up pretty bad. so i'm scared. you know something happened to them. whether they got in another fight or if they crashed her jeep somewhere, neither nikki or tyler pressed charges. so police let them go. nikki sister says

they last spoke on may 8th, more than a week after police shot him in the chest. 11 year old adrienne murray is talking about the terrifying experience exclusively with abc news. he's still trying to figure out why it happened. here's abc's demarco morgan. it's been barely a week since 11 year old adrienne murray was shot in the chest inside his own home by mississippi. police responding to a call for help. i ran across the corner and then i just got shot. how did you come out of the room? i came out doing this. what did it feel like? it feels like like a taser. like a big punch to the chest, a dairy and himself calling 911 when he awoke to fighting at four in the morning last week, his mother's ex-boyfriend, who she says had been violent previously, showing up at the family's home. the officer who ultimately fired his gun shot up not long after. once he was like, come out with your
