answering our questions about transit safety. kumasi: plus the big bear that had to be freed after somehow getting stuck inside this car. reggie: woah. oh. ok. kumasi: this is in lake tahoe. reggie: good morning, welcome kumasi: to kumasi: tuesday, may 3. first we start off the forecast with drew. drew: cloud cover, sunshine, temperatures, we can't quite break the trend yet of cooler than average daytime highs. right now the coolest spots are in the 40's, most of us are in the mid-50's. here's a live look from the exploratorium camera showing you the cloud cover this morning. what we will find is that temperatures are slow to warm once again. brighter skies south and east. in the north bay we see cloud cover lingering for part of the afternoon leading to another cool day with temperatures five to 10 degrees below average.

taking a closer look at the daytime highs in a few minutes. let's check in with jobina to see how traffic is doing. jobina: it is really busy in the east bay right now, different story from the holiday traffic yesterday. live picture here showing you 80, headlights traveling westbound to the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights came on at 5:35 and there is certainly a backup in that area with a slow ride in san jose traveling along the northbound two hundred 80. signal alert because of a shooting that happened earlier this morning. according to police, two people were shot near highway 87. speed traveling northbound at 15 miles per hour and they expect to have the lane blocked until further notice. kumasi: thank you. state lawmakers today joining business in transit leaders to call for the approval of $5 billion in additional funding for mass transit, they say that it is still struggling post endemic in that immediate action

is needed to prevent major service cuts across california. transit agencies have been surviving off federal money but by 2025 main -- many agencies predict the extra cash is going to run out. amanda is live this morning on the embarcadero bart station. amanda: it's a do or die decisions -- decision point, that is how bart describes it's fate. they say they need help to keep functioning. while the agency has recently restored $2 billion to the transit capital program, the agency predicts the extra cash will run out by 2025. in a release, the agency had a stunning claim that everyone would pay the price if bark fails, even those who do not use it, pointing to fueling climate change and congested roads. but even more is to be felt by those who solely rely on the system.

>> without transit they cannot get to work, to school, the doctor, the supermarket. amanda: bart recent improvements to safety and service that they said would be wiped out by severe service cuts. they call it a recipe for a death spiral, including adding up to 18 additional police officers to control trains, safety staff for ambassadors, intervention specialists and services on trains, doubling the discount for train interiors twice as often and so much more. within the next few minutes we are expecting to commit with the bart interim police chief and or president to talk about steps forward and what it might mean for safety as well if they don't it that short-term funding. for now live at the embarcadero station, amanda. reggie: new details this morning

about a stepping -- stabbing that happened in chinatown. a worker was seriously wounded at the aa bakery café. officials say the worker has life-threatening injuries. the suspect in the case was detained. it's not confirmed that the same suspect was also arrested. investigators are still trying to determine a motive. members of unity are worried that this could keep people away from the neighborhood. >> it is one of the go to stops in chinatown. it is one of the go to bakeries in all of san francisco. the community has been working so hard for years to bring foot traffic back into the community. to make people feel welcome. feel safe. reggie: lily of the delta chinatown initiative says that this area was one of the hardest hit by pandemic because of lower than normal foot traffic. kumasi: the man accused in the stabbing death of the cash at

the beckett is is expected to be in san francisco today. nima momeni will be back in court and a judge will decide if there is enough evidence to go to trial. his attorney has said that her client acted in self-defense. reggie: members of congress returning to take up the debt ceiling deal. gop pushing to pass quickly, but others are pushing back. jobina: a joint effort to win bipartisan support for the debt ceiling deal is evolving in washington, d.c., according to reports president biden and speaker mccarthy are confident the measure will pass the vote, however there are early signs that the bill might not gain support from key members of both parties. at least 10 house republicans are reportedly leaning to or planning to vote no on the measure, arguing that the bill doesn't cut enough spending on

the federal level. democrats are worried that cuts in the bill are too deep. covid funding, irs funding, work requirements on food assistance and other government services are looking to get reduced by the measure. tax hikes for the wealthiest americans and big corporations are not included in the bill. the house is expected to vote on the measure tomorrow in the bill would then face the senate with a tight june 5 deadline before the nation defaults on its bills. kumasi: thank you. tuition increases at cal state might be necessary for the financial well-being of the college system according to a new report suggesting a raisin tuition is needed by the fall of next year. wages have gone up and buildings need upgrades and repairs. some say that the system should put the needs of students first. >> i support our staff. i think that the people who work there, our teachers are very vital.

reggie: two people were hurt after a bull charge into a crowd during a rodeo event in australia. a five-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with head injuries after getting trampled and another man went to the hospital as a precaution. dozens of people were seen lying dancing in the center of the arena moments before the bull charged. event officials removed the animal eventually. the rodeo association says that an investigation is underway. drew: well, ok, some of those people did not move fast enough. future weather this morning, cloudy skies. 10 a.m. it's sunny conditions along the peninsula, south bay and east bay over the city east bay and north bay and similar to yesterday it was stuck in cloud cover for much of the early

reggie: russia accusing kyiv of launching and early-morning drone attack on moscow. russia called it a terrorist attack sang at least eight drones were launched causing minor damage to several buildings. some drones were shot down bringing the war home to russians after 15 months of destruction across ukraine. the mayor of moscow says that no one was seriously hurt. ukraine has not commented on the claim. it comes after the ukrainian capital saw multiple russian missile attacks. several offices were hit. four people were killed and dozens were hospitalized after overnight attacks us the country. in the south bay, san jose police are seeking information about the public, from the public, on a hit and run that

caused major injuries. a woman hit from behind after writing her bike in march. dragged about 400 feet. the suspect kept on driving and left the scene. they were last seen driving westbound on march 18 at 12:40 a.m. and sj pd says to reach out to the tip line with info. kumasi: a weekend drowning in the east bay serving as a stark reminder about how important water safety is. a man drowned saturday near livermore, witnesses say that he jumped from the boat to retrieve and or that had fallen into the water. experts say one factor that may have contributed is the cold water that has been a consequence of our winter storms. officials say that as the heavy snowpack melts, the water is cold and it makes it hard to navigate unless you are a skilled swimmer. there tips for safety are to stay in chest deep water and

wear a life jacket. reggie: it wasn't for the weekend that communities on the coast had hoped for. santa cruz was not as popular as usual for memorial day weekend. many businesses had hoped the holiday would help them to recover from winter storms and high surfeit a beaches look like this but they say that because it was so gloomy it was not as crowded as they wanted it to be. >> the weather is very important. i think if it was tending is hotter, the numbers would have spiked. >> the weather is a big part of how our business does and how busy it is here. if it is hot in the valley they will come over. more than anything else it the weather, the weather, the weather. reggie: the long weekend is usually great for businesses but right now they are optimistic that the coming weeks and months ahead will be warmer. reggie: warriors -- kumasi: warriors have a lot of questions this summer and we might get one of those answers today.

bob myers is meeting with the media as he usually does after the season but he may tell us if he is leaving the team. according to reports he's poised to walk away despite the huge contract offered to stay. reggie: the future of the eighth oakland a's, a topic for nevada state lawmakers. yesterday two state senate committees discussed providing up to $380 million in public money for a $1.5 billion ballpark. when a state lawmaker asked the a's would stay in oakland if the stadium plan doesn't work out in vegas, here is what the ceo of the convention visitors authority said. >> if this agreement does not go through, they will look for other cities. they will not decide to stay, even if this does not go through. reggie: nevada lawmakers have a week to consider the proposal before they adjourn on june 5, though they could call a special session to vote on it. kumasi: if you are headed to

later today. 50's on the coastline and the peninsula. san mateo to redwood city, mountain view at 68. downtown, 61. cooler on the coast, upper 50's and the sunset and richmond districts. north day, clouds are struggling again. yesterday they were tough to break down. seems like that's setting up again this afternoon, keeping temperatures mainly in the 50's and 60's. east bay, afternoon sunshine. 67 in union city. 68 in fremont. in land we are 10 degrees below average for this time of year. upper 60's to low 70's. the marine layer expands, surges in land. temperatures in the upper 40's to near 50. if you want warmer weather, by the end of the week will begin to feel the 80's returning to the warmest spots in land. by the weekend it looks a lot warmer than the past holiday weekend. well into the 80's and the

warmest spots. 70's on the bay shoreline. maybe a degree or two warmer by sunday afternoon. a ridge of high pressure will begin to build in. accuweather forecast finding cool afternoons today and tomorrow is a warming trend gets underway by the end of the week. upcoming weekend, marine layer gets compressed, meaning more sunshine. [inaudible] jobina: he said more sunshine faster if you didn't get to hear him. back up continues to build in san jose due to the shooting investigation that's underway. according to police the shooting at self-help -- happened near willow street at highway 87 where they had one lane before 280 blocked down to about 19 miles per hour. we know that both victims in the shooting are facing life-threatening injuries in that's the latest we have their. elsewhere the richmond-san rafael bridge, filling in with people traveling in the

metering lights came on at 5:35 and the biggest issue that has been in place since this morning is the signal alert underway in san jose, you can see the backup standing near the red line on 87 before 280. there's one lane blocked and it will be there until further notice. speeds are 12 miles per hour in this spot and according to police two but were shot near the area, rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, they are asking you to avoid willow street. kumasi: thank you. elizabeth holmes is expected to begin her prison sentence today. sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison after being convicted on four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy last year. gloria rodríguez joins us with more. gloria: elizabeth holmes expected to report to the bryan, texas federal prison camp to start her 11 year texas -- sentence. we have live footage from the

prison. she has been ordered to turn herself in today. meanwhile we are learning more details about what her life will be like kind bars. the disgraced cyrano's founder -- theranos founder, start her 11 year sentence today at a minimum security prison. the 39-year-old will wake up at 6 a.m. there will be two sets of bunk beds in her room with no doors. she is expected to work in the kitchen making $.12 per hour for 90 days. the women's prison camp houses 650 inmates most convicted of white-collar crimes and low level offenses. >> nothing compares to the experience she will have on tuesday, make her bed, go to her job, and repeat. every day. no matter what she argues happened, the result is that she is going to be separated from

her family, children, and friends for many years. that may be the highest price a person could pay. gloria: she was convicted of four counts of fraud and conspiracy in january of 2022 for defrauding investors over false claims with her company's blood testing technology. she has two young children, a son born into thousand 21 and a three-month-old daughter. she has been free on bail since she was convicted and we will keep you updated when she reports to prison. live in the newsroom, gloria rodríguez. reggie: thank you. prosecutors in the case against of the crypto founder stx said they made mayor was charges. the documents saying that lawyers for the bay area native sam bankman-fried insisted the government overreached in their case. he faces charges of cheating investors out of billions of

dollars after ftx collapsed. he has been under house arrest at his parents home in palo alto. kumasi: one-year-old got hurt on memorial day. jobina? jobina: gun fire erupted after some sort of confrontation. the camera capturing the chaos as shots rang out, some running into the water to escape the gunfire. five adults and four children were shot. a one-year-old among those hit. police and bystanders are shown treating victims. reportedly all are in stable condition and an eyewitness said he saw several young men in front of the stores, mining the boardwalk when one of them pulled out a gun and started shooting. >> preliminary investigation reveals there was an altercation between two step resulted in gunfire. jobina: the shooting was one of many over the holiday weekend. in columbus, ohio five people

were shot at a block party. three teenagers are expected to survive in that case. in chicago police say at least 47 overshot over the weekend. nine of them fatally. abc news reporting that at least one person is in custody for the florida boardwalk shooting that happened in hollywood, florida north of miami but police are still looking for more suspects in that case, reggie. reggie: we are hearing from local republicans and democrats that shows donald trump with a big lead among california republican voters. this is a story that we first told you about yesterday. >> it's not surprising. this is a republican thing, we like to go with the guy with whom we are more familiar. reggie: the poll shows that trump has 44% support among likely republican voters with ron desantis at 26%. >> it's a strange phenomena for

democrats. on the one hand god for bid he's reelected. on the other hand, joe biden beat him once and democrats are confident given the results of the last election that they can beat him again. reggie: political strategists say that with six months to go, there is still a lot of room for another republic and to emerge. kumasi: turning to a story you will see only here, a warning from a dog owner after her dog got sick after a recent trip to the park. she ate human waste on the ground that was laced with opioids and marijuana. hours later after a trip to emergency care, document -- documents show that she had signs of marijuana intoxication and opioids in the system. she didn't eat enough to need narcan. however her owner found something else that was alarming to dog owners in the city. >> essentially the doctor that night told me that this was

relatively common and she sees it a few times a week. kumasi: other dog owners say they are shocked by what happened with pockets. doc rivers say that if she had to eat more, she would have suffered kidney or liver damage. reggie: a cherry picking is back. the weather has delayed the opening of you pick farms across the state. barela family farms and morgan hill opened over the weekend. >> mother nature has got to do a little bit more work but the further down that you go you can see the cherries are ready and the outcome has been amazing. we have an amazing community and the people coming up to our orchard has been wonderful. reggie: the cherries are picked all over the world and those not taken during the you pick season will be taken to a packinghouse. officials weighing in on ways to make trains and stations safer

for customers. amanda has been speaking with those officials for their take and she joins us live from the embarcadero station. amanda? amanda: a lot of it has to do with budgets. the agency making a strong claim that everyone will suffer if bart fails, saying that is what is really needed in terms of that short-term funding when they talk about operations, when they talk about services. things that the system definitely relies on. they said each day they moved closer to plunging off a fiscal cliff, presenting do or die decisions. they said that if the state does not provide aid to fund transit operations, the agency spelled out how failure would look, saying it would include trains once an hour, no service on weekends or after 9:00 weeknights, no service to san francisco international or oakland international airports, warning that some stations would close with the potential for entire lines being shuttered.

the agency says the impact would hit some of the most vulnerable members of our community the hardest. in the last few minutes we connected with the interim police chief to address the budget and impact to safety and service. the agency warns that severe service cuts could be possible without proper funding, but they are sharing confidence and optimism in the steps they are taking to make safety a top priority. >> everything we want t requires staffing and personnel of our sworn officers and our unarmed civilian personnel. the hiring is the most critical thing i'm doing outside of maximizing the presence of every siegel person i have on the department right now. it's all hands on deck right now.
