license, like i said, getting into college, like i said. >> oakland is facing a deficit over the next two years. >> there are no bailouts for this budget deficit that we are facing. >> oakland city council held a budget on tuesday. the department of violence prevention is facing cuts of more than $3 million and that means oakland community groups could face cuts as early as july. >> for them to be taking the third largest budget decrease of any department in the city of oakland in a moment when we have heard from our city council members that violence prevention and public safety is a priority for them, it is hard-pressed to make sense of. >> in an email, the mayor emphasized that despite cuts, the overall budget avoids layoffs, no disruption in services. oakland city council member carol fife writes that oakland is facing "one of the roughest fiscal periods we have ever experienced. but some argue the cuts need to

what this has been. >> his new opportunity to re-find me during our interview that the former attorney lost that bond hearing. i reached out to the district attorney's office for comment today and have not yet received a response. in the newsroom for the i team, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. ama: we are learning new information about the suspect in yesterday's stabbing at a bakery in chinatown. the suspect, a 61-year-old, was released from prison 10 days ago after serving five years for attempted murder. he is believed to be the man this photo. the suspect walked into the bakery without saying a word and stabbed a worker. we are told the employee will be ok. he faces multiple felony counts including murder, burglary, and parole violation. dan: san francisco police had to shut down outer sunset because of a hoax.

someone put a box with wires on it at the sidewalk between irving and judas streets. it looks like dina knight -- dynamite but it was fake. police had shut down the block and 47th avenue around 12:30 to investigate and make sure everything was ok. things are back to normal now. >> san jose police are looking for a motive in a double shooting that left a man dead and a woman wounded. officers discovered both victims just before 10:00 last night. the investigation forced the closure of one lane of highway 87 for several hours. police say they have no information on a relationship between the two or any suspect. dan: in the south bay, santa clara county and san jose officials say numbers from the latest homeless count shows decreases in the number of unsheltered individuals and overall homelessness so what have san jose leaders learned about getting people off the streets that other bay area cities have not? here is dustin dorsey.

>> leaders in the south bay have been trying to find solutions to end homelessness and now, they are learning what they are doing is working. quite homelessness continues to be a severe crisis in our community. but we can see progress our collective efforts. >> we have begun to reduce the human suffering that our homelessness crisis entails and we cannot stop now. >> 2020 3's estimated homeless count shows many positive trends in santa clara county and the city of san jose. unsheltered homelessness down 4% in santa clara county. dan templeton 7% in san jose -- down 10.7% in san jose. 12.9 percent in san jose. for overall homelessness, the county has seen a 1.2% decrease. san jose, a 4.7% decrease. numbers going down in the city for the second year in a row. >> we are leading the way here in san jose and reducing unsheltered homelessness by

embracing solutions that are faster to deploy. in order for them to be faster, they have to be more cost-effective. ama: san jose -- >> san jose credits their success to interim housing so people can start to get their lives heading in a better direction, something a community member can attest to. >> i was homeless. the only hope that i programs like this. >> advocates maintain these programs are only a first step and more affordable housing is needed to keep these numbers from spiking again. the mayor says the city has plans to invest in more affordable housing but believes these faster, cheaper projects will ultimately lead to more stability so people can find housing security on their own. >> the idea that we will have to build some kind of permanently subsidized, permanent housing for every person who is living on the streets today is a recipe for not ending homelessness. >> more affordable housing

dan: a major shakeup for the warriors today. longtime president and general manager bob myers is stepping down after leaving the team to four championships. ama: larry beil has been following the story all day. larry: i did a report a couple months ago and he indicated that they are increasing the offer, increasing the offer. when the guy does not take the offer no matter how much money, you know it is time to move on and bob is. meyer is one of those unique people. i have never heard anybody say about a word about him. university -- universally loved and respected which is why his decision to leave the warriors today is so impactful. leaving after 12 seasons, winning four championships, engineered so many trades that kept the warriors in contention,

dealing with crisis after crisis and that does include a lot of draymond green. one executive told me that success, money, and power usually change people but not bob. he remained true to who he is and he leaves at a critical time for this organization. they have very big decisions coming this summer. chris alvarez joining us from chase center and i am actually surprised bob did not cry today. he wears his emotions on his sleeve. he got close a couple of times, chris. >> that is the thing everyone loves about him. unlike any gm in all of professional sports, you can tell he cares about this organization and the team. you think about the time between klay thompson and kevin durant got hurt, how emotional he was. he did get emotional talking about his family and the fans and you can feel the genuine connection he has to this warriors franchise. >> i love the people of my work and i will not get to see them as much. i will not get to help them as much as i can and that is a

tough thing but i also know that they deserve the parts of that i got to be able to give but it will be the people. >> such a great person, so smart, and hard. we have all worked together for a long time. >> yes, they have. over a decade. 11, 12 years. four titles and that continuity has helped build this dynasty and now, they will have a new face in the front office. he was asked about who a potential replacement would be. he did not want to box himself in, as he said what those decisions have to be made in the next month or so. the draft, free agency, all those things coming up. it will be interesting to see if they go internal or outside. this job will be one coveted around the league. >> for sure.

dire service cuts. police leaders were at the station today and they acknowledged that concerns about safety are part of what is keeping ridership low what say people who commit crimes on trains or in the stations do get arrested. ridership is at 44% of pre-pandemic levels. the interim police chief, kevin franklin, says they need support from state lawmakers in the form of funding. >> are partnerships with the state of california are critical and just letting them know what fully funding a transit system means to the bay area. ama: bart officials predict the money they have already received will run out by 2025 and if they do not get more, big cuts will calm such as trains just once an hour. dan: state senator s wiener bailing out public transit across the state. labor and business leaders and joined him to ask for more state funding to avoid service cuts.

>> public transportation right now is being crisis and if we do not act to save it, we will cause deep and lasting damage to california's economy, our environment, our housing affordability, and our quality of life. dan: he says there are three reasons for the transit financial crisis. pandemic federal relief funds have started to run out. inflation is driving across and as we heard, ridership is not recovering as quickly as transit leaders had hoped. the senator referenced his home district of san francisco to illustrate the point. sfmta has threatened to cut 20 bus lines if it does not get more money. governor newsom's budget this year included zero dollars to address operational shortfalls. ama: funding is now in place to restore the abandoned and dilapidated berkeley marina peer. according to the bay area news group, the city received a $5.1 million grant from local transit officials to reopen and expand the peer which has been closed

and tuesday but i think a lot of people have been complaining that it has been too cool lately. quite so would not say complaining. that is not the word i would use. noticing. ama: francisco elementary school. mission education center celebrated its 50th anniversary. it is the only public elementary school specifically for newly arrived finnish speaking immigrant students. the school unveiled a new mosaic mural, created with support from a local artist and students. dan: a milestone of a different kind for a san francisco middle school that should benefit not only the students but the community as well. they were at a middle school for a a new turf field. students used to have to play on asphalt. those days are over. the field will be open to the public for use. we spoke with one teacher who serves as coach and he says the
