they found two cars off the road and a lagoon. it happened near highway one along the coast of pescadero. of the vehicles fully submerged. the other was at the edge of the lagoon. chp says a third patient was flown to stanford hospital in critical condition. one-way traffic control is in place tonight. the chp says drivers should wait as authorities continue their investigation. tim johns, abc7news. ama: outrage over vandalism at a historic catholic church. the statue of father unit perrault sarah was destroyed by vandals three years ago. he founded california's missions but recently his treatment of indigenous people has been called into question. emotions are flaring up again. j.r. stone is in san rafael with the protest over how the vandals are being punished. >> signs say and anti-catholic

hate now. chance echoing the same thoughts in reference to this. the vandalism and destruction of a statue that happened outside the saint raphael catholic church back in 2020. charges were immediately filed against five people but those have now been reduced to misdemeanors. here's melanie morgan. >> it's a slap in the face of all of the people who believe in a religious community and we are very disturbed about what happened. reporter: the district attorney says the five involved in this vandalism have participated in a restorative justice program. she defended the court's resolution. >> the defendants agreed to participate in a restorative justice process. they went through two years of meetings with the practitioner who works in our office. who felt that they were sincere in their beliefs and remorse. reporter: they attended 18

classes during that time but this group says that's unacceptable. >> it's nothing but a slap on the wrist. people are tired of it. rule of law needs to be followed. it will people tearing down the stuff. that's the problem. there is an agenda behind it. anti-christian agenda. >> it started when a group of vandals and thugs, very destructive people came here and tore down the statue. reporter: the five defendants must also pay monetary restitution for the repair or replacement of the statue, complete 50 hours of volunteer work, and participate in a community forum with the historian involved. >> we hope that will be something where both sides can really appreciate and understand each other's beliefs so that people don't resort to committing crimes to be heard and understood. reporter: the five defendants must also apologize and the da tells me that will be a written

apology. j.r. stone, abc7news. dan: new details emerging about yesterday's stabbing at the popular aa bakery in san francisco's chinatown. police say the suspect, a 61-year-old, was released from prison just 10 days ago after serving five years for attempted murder. a witness took this photo of the man believed to be the suspect after the stabbing. according to a witness, the suspect walked in without saying a word and stabbed a worker. >> my hands are still shaking. this is how i feel and i believe a lot of people in the community are shaking. dan: they haven't given a motive for the attack. he has been booked in san francisco on multiple charges including attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, and a parole violation. aaron peskin s recovering and has been visited

upper 50's to upper 70's. numbers will come down slowly by 7:00. this is just the start of some changes ahead as we go into june. i will be back with the forecast, coming right up. ama: thank you. live look from the capitol building ndc tonight where there's developing news with the legislation to raise the debt ceiling. the bill narrowly made it out of the house committee, setting the stage for a vote tomorrow night. president biden and kevin mccarthy are trying to ensure the legislation passes. both are running into opposition on the compromise reached over the weekend. for the president, it's the progressive wing that's arguing he gave up too much. for republicans, a revolt led by the freedom caucus which is upset there aren't enough spending cuts. >> initially, we heard that 95% of the house republican conference supports the agreement. that doesn't appear to be the case. >> not one republican should vote for this deal. it's a bad deal.

ama: republicans have signaled there's enough support to end the -- in the senate. the treasury has warned the u.s. could run out of money to pay its bills as early as june 5. dan: a major turning point for the golden state warriors. the general manager that oversaw for championships and countless memories bob myers announcing his resignation today. larry beil is here with more. in some ways, this wasn't a complete surprise. larry: not if you are reading the tea leaves. bob myers made the decision -- you could see it on its way for months. stepping down as warriors g.m., ending a 12 year run that and that produced a dynasty. he didn't want more money. he wanted relief. a break from the stress that comes with a job that retired -- requires your attention every single day. whether it's 3:00 p.m. or a.m.. it takes a lot to walk away from steph curry. myers felt he needed to be all

san francisco's tourism industry has been struggling to bounce back from the pandemic. 50 san francisco groups are getting a combined $2 million to help boost the cities shopping and tourist district. you are seeing some of the improvements here. chris larson is donating the money, much of which will go to local merchant associations. dan: it's our daily mission at abc 7 to help build a better bay area. we are finding some of those breakthroughs. our first involves the search for solutions to the bay's homeless crisis. san francisco is shifting its approach and will have a street crisis team made up of urban alchemy workers responding to non-crime related calls. those with the most experience will be part of a one-year pilot program that the city is calling heart. it stands for homeless engagement assistance response team. >> we do well in uncomfortable situations. uncomfortable being uncomfortable because i don't see an angry person. i see her hurt person. i don't see violence, i see

trauma. we will bring kindness, that relationship. dan: there are signs of progress in the south bay. homelessness dropping in san jose by 7%. oakland is facing a historic budget deficit and cuts could affect violence prevention programs. community groups held a rally ahead of a special budget meeting. violence prevention stands to have more than $3 million in funding slashed. numerous programs could see budgets shrink and there's concern it could undo progress that's been made over the past couple of years. the oakland mayor says despite the cuts, the overall budget avoids layoffs and no disruption in services. our final building a better bay area breakthrough. legislators urging governor gavin newsom to bailout the states public transit. scott wiener was at the state capitol alongside other lawmakers today.

dan: people are demanding answers after city leaders stopped another search after an apartment building collapse in iowa. protesters were outside city hall today. the apartment building partially fell apart on sunday and forced dozens to evacuate their homes. crews have rescued nine people but five are still unaccounted for. fire officials say another search has been delayed because of the building being unstable. during their initial search, officials said the building shifted and they believe it

could get worse. a tennessee woman feared missing is safe after being tracked down in northern california. nikki alcaraz set out from tennessee with her boyfriend to visit family in orange county. they were last seen in new mexico. the two were spotted yesterday at a walmart in redding and police located them today in eureka. it's not clear what happened over the past several weeks but police video out of new mexico show both bloody and bruce. ama: a severe overcrowding of pets in the south bay. the number of animals appearing at the san jose animal center is forcing them to make tough choices. lauren martinez shows the urgent need to adopt or foster. reporter: is full. they no longer have the capacity to take in healthy dogs or cats. >> i've been here since the shelter opened in 2004. i don't recall the number of

animals at any given time at the shelter this high. reporter: the animal shelter has more than 900 animals. 745 of them are kittens alone. during april and may, the shelter received an average of 300 animals per week. >> i was hoping we weren't going to get here but we have used our classroom for cat cages. we have rooms here to my right and left with small dogs that are all in the same room, separated by a little gate of some sort. reporter: the shelter is only accepting sick, injured, or aggressive animals. the high numbers they are seeing are a mixture of strays and animals surrounded by their owners. >> you have somebody at the front of your building begging you to take the animal because of the situation that they are in. that mix it hard for the staff to say no to those folks. >> we were fostering these kittens for the last three weeks. now we've decided that we love

them and we are going to take them home to adopt them. reporter: the shelter hopes you do what this san jose resident did. foster or adopt. >> there are animals that have been here for a long time that are still adoptable pets. reporter: greta has been at the shelter since august. ronnie was turned in last july. >> that's our ultimate goal. we are here because we want to save animals. reporter: the shelter is waiving adoption fees through june. for additional help, shelter officials have requested overnight staff in their budget proposal that city council will consider in the next few weeks. lauren martinez, abc 7 news. dan: awfully cute. new developments with the dodgers pride night controversy. clayton kershaw says he disagrees with the teams decision to re-invite the sisters of perpetual indulgence. kershaw says his issues are not with the lgbtq community but

with the sisters. he tells the los angeles times, the group makes fun of a religion and he doesn't agree with it. kershaw says the announcement by the dodgers re-inviting the sisters made him approach the club about speeding up its announcement about a christian faith and family day to be held later this year. ama: a popular travel hack called skip lagging saves money for passengers. airlines have created new policies to stop passengers from doing it. it's when people book a flight with a connecting city but they don't fly the entire route. their intended destination is the layover city. getting there via a connector is cheaper than buying a direct fight. people find them on skip lag, a website that was sued by united airlines in 2014. that case was thrown out. exciting news on the peninsula. the zoo will finally reopen this weekend. it's been 11 weeks since storms forced the recreation area to shut down.
