sandhya: abc7news right now. >> live, breaking news. >> a wild crime spree has left three people dead in two cities. the whole thing started just after 3:00 p.m.. sky 7 was over multiple scenes in san jose where at least two people were stopped and have life threatening injuries. >> what happened at a target parking lot on hillsdale avenue were police save the suspect carjacked one to mend and struck a pedestrian as he left the scene. that person is expected to recover. that suspect was later spotted in the suspect vehicle near the intersection of santa clara and 16th street. the suspect appeared to have ramped two vehicles ultimate causing life-threatening injuries. as of now both those pedestrians have succumbed to those injuries. >> theretiple investigation

going on i milpitas as well as link to what happened in san jose. you can see heavy police response in this video out of milpitas with police running to the scene of that stabbing. this is in the parking lot of a smart and final store. >> the suspect was arrested a short distance away without incident. we will have an update at 11:00. dan: thank you for joining for the special edition of abc7news. let's move to the new role for a controversial figure in the bay area. ama: he is now leading the new criminal law and justice center. a reporter sat with him to discuss the new job and life after the recall. >> the internationally renowned berkeley law also national school has a new hire, a man who recently made national headlines. >> the former san

district attorney who was recalled last year now named as executive director of the new criminal law and justice center at uc berkeley. the university says the center will be a research and advocacy hub to boost berkeley law school around criminal justice. >> we've got to do the work to see if it bears out and if it doesn't, we got to make adjustment in the policy because our safety is paramount. >> perceptions about safety were at the forefront of the recall effort. he was elected san francisco da on a campaign of policing and public safety forms. he was recalled in 2022. just 2.5 years into his four year term. his critics slammed him for being soft on crime, saying his progressive reforms were too lenient, making san francisco less safe. that sometimes harsh criticism will not deter him from what is ahead. >> we've got to continue to be principled, even in the face of often public discourse that is

hostile and disrespectful and is trying to move us backwards to failed policies. >> he believes support for progressive policies continues to grow. he says never say never, but for now, he is not interested in reelection. >> i was frustrated with the extent to which public policymaking is devoid of facts and evidence and even short-term memory. >> he says he is still committed to criminal justice reform. coming up with data-driven solutions to public safety challenges. >> we can debate which policies are better and which feel better to us, but we've got to do the work. that's what i'm excited about here at berkeley law, to be able to dig in and look at big picture data over time and analyze it. dan: and alameda judge reportedly was robbed this morning just blocks from the

main courthouse in oakland. the alameda county's sheriffs office said he was held up just before 9:00 a.m. in a parking rog near 13th and madison street. thieves took his wallet and his rolex watch. there are multiple surveillan cameras in the area which could help in the investigation. we are tracking robberies in oakland as part of our abc7 neighborhood safety tracker. we have data for different crimes in different cities. you can check it all out on our website, abc7news.com. ama: the state assembly passed what is known as a journalism preservation act today. it would require companies like google, twitter, and meta, to pay a portion of their advertising dollars to those they host. the bill now moves to the state senate. meta has threatened to pull all news from its platforms,

facebook and instagram, if it passes. a bill to establish an ebony alert system has passed the state senate and is headed to the state senate. our report explains what it would do. >> from the over state highways to a push alert just like an amber alert. there's a new will that aims to create what is called an ebony alert across california. >> we deserve the same empathy and sympathy as everyone else. to state senator steven bradford out of los angeles county. the alert would be specifically for black youth and young black women between the ages of 12 and 25. they say black youth are disproportion classified as runaways. >> criteria for the amber alert is that law enforcement has to believe there is suspicion of someone being abducted. we brought in that language,

basically if you are missing under suspicious or unexplained circumstance. >> senator bradford says for him, the data is clear. although african-americans make up almost 38% of individuals who go missing every year. >> it's unfortunate that here in california in 2023 we need separate types of notifications, but we see through the data that these groups are being ignored when it comes to dedicating the resources to bring them home. >> jennifer says her organization sees the problem on at least a weekly basis. >> our work has been to support families to find their young people. we work with love never fails and other efforts. because we have had to do it ourselves. we haven't been able to rely on the efforts of the police because they haven't taken action.

>> while she says there needs to be a larger, comprehensive approach to what is happening to black girls, she says an ebony alert is a good start. >> we need to care enough to help them. dan: it is the first day of pride month and around the bay area, the progress pride lag was raised from city hall to redwood city, oakland, and even to the california department of education in sacramental. a drag queen story and campbell help kickoff pride month in the south bay. silicon valley pride at a shopping center, and this particular storytime event is viewed as a special comeback. it's a first one held after protesters interrupted the event last year. >> that was really painful. the happiest moment about that was that the kids did not notice, and they had a really great time. this time, it was all good.

organizers say this year, community could not be more important. >> very serious threats are being made toward our community. it's been a lot of steps forward and then a few steps back every year. >> more than 540 anti-lgbtq+ bills introduced this year in state legislatures. 220 bill specifically targeting transgender and non-binary people. 45 anti-lgbtq laws have been enacted this year. >> we are fortunate we get to live here in beautiful california where it is a lot more progressive. but it does give me pause to think about my trans brothers and sisters across the nation who have other issues they're dealing with as far as legislation is concerned. cornell: organizers say they're making big changes to this year's entertainment program. >> we added more drag this year and we are adding more talent to

dan: breaking news, the senate has passed the deal to raise the debt ceiling. >> t been achieved, the bill is passed. dan: both of california's senators voted yes.

the senate vote came about 24 hours after the house passed the deal. in just a few days shy of monday's deadline. the treasury secretary projects they will run out of money. the president has vowed to sign the deal immediately with time getting short. a frightening image today, the president fell on stage during the u.s. air force academy graduation. he took a hard fall. watch now, the president gave the commencement address and handed out diplomas, but as he turned to go back to his seat, he fell hard. he was helped up quickly and continued back to his chair for the rest of the event. the white house says he is fine, he simply tripped over a sandbag that was on stage to hold down the teleprompter. ama: alameda county prosecutors have reached a negotiated settlement, the case has been controversial for the da. he faced three murder charges in three separate 2008 killings

until yesterday when a judge granted a request by the das office to dismiss two cases because a key witness now refuses to testify. the prosecutor said he is meeting tomorrow with the family oft -- the victim and the third place -- the third case, and alleged order for hire. he has been in jail since the 2008 killings. manna choose to killing a chinatown bakery employee was in court today but his arraignment was delayed for weeks so his attorney could research the case. he faces attempted other charges. he had been released on parole just 10 days before. his attorney says he has until health issues. >> the criminal justice system denied him access to pr mental health and preventative care. >> you want to look at everything about his release and what information was provided to

dan: in san jose today, groundbreaking for new affordable housing development. it has 60 total units on the ys out of the city. most important, it will be a 100% affordable housing development. >> the 5100 affordable housing units. when all the housing bond of elements are in operation, we will have new permanent housing for approximately 14,800 people. dan: 50% of the units will for people transitioning out of homelessness. ama: san mateo county just got a $5 million boost from the state, the grant will fund 28 manufactured housing units. 10 will go to farmworkers displaced by shooting at two mushroom farm set half moon bay. the others are earmarked for low

afternoon. 62 in the city, 75 santa rosa, 74 in san jose. high-pressure nudges a little area, thunderstorms fired up in the northern california mountains and over the weekend the sea air will have more showers and thunderstorms. not so much tomorrow but for the weekend in tahoe. gusts to 26 miles an hour around concord right now, still breezy across the region although not us windy as earlier today. 54 in san francisco,, 56 in oakland, 54 in half moon bay. so far so good, even though they have some low clouds, 58 in santa rosa and napa, 61 in fairfield and 58 in concord. looking at the port of oakland, visibility is good right now. limited fog overnight near the coast and bay.

the warming trend continues for the next several days and temperatures will be rising above average for a change this weekend. dublin high school graduating at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon, it's going to be gorgeous weather. lots of sunshine, mid 70's between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., coming up to about 78 degrees. temperature will drop off at 5:00 p.m., but still very pleasant. congratulations to all the graduates tomorrow as well. notice the fog is primarily san francisco and east bay, couple of patches in the north bay but most of the north bay should be clear. as we head towards tomorrow afternoon, bumping up the temperatures into the 80's. not a lot of change at the coast. temperatures in the 40's and 50's out the door tomorrow morning, the fog is something you will need to watch out for. upper 50's coast side, everyone else in between the ranges.

we are starting to see a little bit of separation between coast and inland. warmer saturday, sunday the temperature range will hold 50's to upper 80's. the forecast will feature the warmest weather this weekend with upper 80's inland, close to 90 degrees, upper 50's to low 60's at the coast. cloudier and cooler start and it week and a slight possibility of some showers tuesday. could be an isolated thunderstorm. an area of low pressure will retrograde from southern california and pull in some moisture. dan: coming up next, t to
