dan: a deadly crime spree across the south bay. a carjacking, stabbings, a violent hit and run. we are live piecing it together for you tonight. thank you for joining us. ama: police say the single person between this violence was on the run for hours. speeding all over the south bay. dan: police say there were five distinct crime scenes. a total of three people killed and three others injured. ama: we were flying overhead as all this was playing out, stretching across the five different scenes.

a target parking lot, shopping centers, and city streets. dan: lauren martinez is live in san jose tonight at one of those scenes. walk us through what you've learned today. reporter: we are live right on the santa clara and 16th street were officers just reopened the street. some are still here even though this incident started hours ago. this is just one of several scenes under investigation tonight. a deadly crime spree started in the city of san jose and stretched into the city of milpitas. police say it began around 3:00 on thursday afternoon. a carjacking and stabbing. >> the suspect stabbed the victim, causing life-threatening injuries. that person was transported to the local hospital and still has those injuries. reporter: the suspect went to a second scene, a shopping center where he attempted to carjack a separate vehicle and stabbed

another person. that person's injuries are also life-threatening. the suspect took off. reporter: based -- >> they struck a pedestrian in the parking lot area. reporter: that victim is ok. as this rampage continued to unfold, the suspect was spotted near the intersection of santa clara street and 16th street. >> that suspect intentionally rammed to individuals, causing them life-threatening injuries. as of right now, both of those pedestrians have succumbed to those injuries. reporter: police were responding to a deadly stabbing incident near the smart and final on jaclyn road. after a short time, milpitas police took the suspect into custody. police did not release his age but said he's an adult man. they believe this man is linked to both crimes in milpitas and san jose. >> we feel comfortable that there's no ongoing threat to the public. i want to assure everybody in

the city that they should feel safe tonight, knowing that we have done our job as officers. reporter: three people were killed and three injured. >> shocking. we don't have this type of activity around here at all. reporter: police say this is just a basic timeline. they are still gathering information. they don't have a motive at this time. lauren martinez, abc7news. dan: just wild. thank you very much. the san jose mayor released this statement. it reads in part, are expected to give more updates tomorrow. you can tune into there's news conference -- their news conference wherever you stream. search abc 7 bay area to download the app. ama: new developments from d.c. tonight and that disaster

averted on the u.s. debt ceiling. dan: the senate followed the house in approving a deal to raise the federal debt limit and avoid a default. both california senators voted yes. ama: let's get to tim johns for the latest. reporter: yeah. talk about pulling back from the abyss. congressional leaders pass this bill with days to go before the treasury warrant. the bils passage means the countries debt limit will be now suspended through january 1 2025. without it, the global economy would have been thrown into a recession and the unemployment rate would've soared. california would have been one of the states most impacted if the country were defaulting. majority leader chuck schumer took a victory lap. >> we've saved the country from the scorch of default. even though there was some on the other who wanted to lead us to default. maybe a little tired but we did it. reporter: some aspects of the

bill have remained controversial including opposing work requirements for older americans receiving food aid. alex padilla said, this agreement protects our nation's historic economic recovery and the progress we've secured over the past two years. a dozen republican senators joined democrats in the senate. during debate, many demanded assurances for things like being able to raise military spending later this year. >> we cannot look at -- our obligation to address the nation's most pressing national security challenges. reporter: the bill will now go to the desk of president biden who is expected to sign it into law. he's expected to speak about the passage tomorrow. tim johns, abc7news. ama: thank you. dan: let's move over to weather. as we inch closer to that weekend. ama: sandhya patel is here with a peek at what to expect in your

dispensaries. it would do things like that them serve food and drinks and host live music. right now, shops can only sell cannabis products. if passed, his bill would create a better potshot culture in california would become a destination for cannabis users from around the world, he says. >> this is something that people like to do socially. we are missing an opportunity right now to support our legal cannabis business and small businesses and create jobs. dan: if passed by the state senate and signed by governor newsom, the bill would go into effect on january 1 next year. ama: owning a home could be easier for california farmworkers. san mateo county is getting $5 million from the state. it comes after a mass shooting revealed many workers have been living in poor conditions. the county is proposing building 28 units with more than half of them going to workers displaced by the shooting. sick to million dollars is being

distributed statewide. dan: that comes as protests took place across the country today over a new florida immigration law that takes effect in july. there was a good-sized crowd in los angeles. francisco drew a small crowd. the fort a lot requires businesses that employ over 25 people to check workers immigration status. it will also require some hospitals to ask patients about their immigration status. ama: we had abc 7 are kicking off the celebration of pride month. cities across the bay area started today by raising the progress pride flag. dan: from daly city to san mateo county to oakland city hall and at the california department of education. ama: in campbell, triumph and made inside the doors of local stores. dan: zach fuentes shares this

tale of drag storytime resilience. reporter: it was standing room only inside books inc. in a shopping center. this drag queen miraculously kept the bookstore filled with excited children engaged the entire time. >> honestly a trade secret. i just wing it. reporter: organizers were faced with a looming concern that they could face a repeat of what happened at the event last year. >> we had people that had come from out of the area to protest. they said some pretty nasty things in front of children. it seems to defeat the purpose of what they were protesting. that was really painful. reporter: they helped organize the event. despite the negativity brought by those people, there were positives then followed by plenty more this year. >> i had this moment about that.

the kids did not notice. they had a really great time. this time, it was all good. it was all good. everybody got to enjoy the stories and songs. reporter: it wasn't just a fun time for the families. some tell me it was extremely meaningful. >> my wife and i just wanted to feel like life is normal with two moms. we invite friends to go to things like this, just like their friends invite us to their family things so we can get to know their culture. reporter: silicon valley pride organize the event. protesters or not, other events are planned for the south bay including the august pride parade festival. more drag storytime's. she says she's more than healthy -- happy to help again. >> if the opportunity comes knocking, hit me up. months. the symptoms can last longer than a year. >> some women experience symptoms years before menopause starts. others, years after. you experience all such as hot flashes. there's a considerable proportion of women who experience it for much longer, like 10 years. reporter: she said 10 years. that's why this option is so important. hormone replacement is currently the best treatment, providing the best relief. there are some who can't take hormones or don't want to. hormones aren't recommended for more than a handful of years. ama: if you want to give it a go, talk to your doctor. it's not right for everyone. there can be side effects. it's a tool to explore. dan: very interesting. she helps answer medical questions on abc news and now dr. jen astin is about to help

ama: a couple of good-natured san franciscans showed up big time for a man whose dog was stolen. dan: it's quite a story. the owner got the word out on social media and people spotted the german shepherd near the bay's most iconic location. dan: j.r. stone tells the story. reporter: her name is bonnie. she's a 12-year-old german shepherd who was stolen from outside of the plaza strip mall in san francisco while her owner chas was inside a store. >> when she went missing, he was heartbroken. it was very devastating to see somebody be in that shape, that torn up. reporter: a dog lover herself went to work to try to find bonnie with the help of her boyfriend. >> that same night, i posted on reddit.

reporter: less than 24 hours later, a tip. bonnie spotted on the trail was an unknown man seen in this picture. tuesdanother tip. >> they texted me a photo. is this bonnie? reporter: everything came front and center when the man who was eventually caught with bonnie the dog was spotted here at the golden gate bridge. >> we saw a poster -- they saw the poster. they saw bonnie. that person going northbound on the bridge. reporter: within a short time, they had found the man who had bonnie. he was on a trail near the golden gate bridge. he wouldn't give up the dog before they arrived. officers were called in and animal services identified the dog as bonnie. a huge relief to her owner. >> when we got the phone call, i

could see on his face when i told him that we might have a sighting of him. a renewed his face. he was like, we have to go now. that was three d solon and down. reporter: the suspect is on housed and was arrested on misdemeanor theft charges. at last check, he was no longer in jail but bonnie is now back home. >> happy ending. i'map that so many people get to share the happiness as well. reporter: j.r. stone, abc7news. dan: it's our guiding mission every day at abc 7. tonight, we are sharing one of those breakthroughs in san jose. there is progress in the homeless crisis with the groundbreaking of a new 60 unitive element on the city's east side. it will be 100% affordable housing development, 50% of the units will be for people
