the police department laid out thevts of yesterday's deadly development th.at -- developing. ama: we have team coverage. dustin dorsey heard from the neighbors of the suspect. dan: first, let's begin about what we are learning about the suspect's past tonight. zach: it is a tragic timeline with multiple different scenes. all of it started in san jose. we are at the police department, where milpitas police gave more specifics and surprising details into how the pursuit of the suspect played out. it was an expensive and tragic crime scene thursday, starting at 3:11 in the afternoon. someone was stabbed and carjacked in san jose, the victim survived, but police say the suspect took off in their minivan and made his way to a shopping center where another crime took place. >> the suspect stabbed the victim, carjacked him, then use

twos burgundy honda pilot sub -- used is burgundy honda pilot suv to strike a pedestrian in the parking lot. zach: both victims were treated, and now in a newly carjacked vehicle, the suspect hit a a person, stabbed with non-life-threatening injuries. 16th at santa clara is where things turned more tragic, where the suspect hit three pedestrians. >> the planetary investigation revealed the suspect intentionally struck the victims -- the preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect intentionally struck the victims, two died at the same. shortly after, he struck a person on a motorized scooter at 2200 allen rock. zach: the crime spree expanded in milpitas, in the parking lot of a smart and final. the victim, a 27-year-old man, was pronounced dead hours later. as the search progressed, we are now learning there were concerns

over a graduation ceremony at a local high school happening at the same time as the crimes. >> we moved officers to perimeter positions to make sure people were protected. zach: the ceremony was not interrupted as the suspect was taken into custody in a dramatic scene. emerged from a parked vehicle and officers took him into custody on arizona avenue west a quarter mile from where the stabbings took place. zach: 37-year-old kevin parknoura is known to law enforcement and has several felony misdemeanor convictions, something abc 7 discovered through court documents. parkourana has struggled with mental health, one factor they are investigating as they search for a motive. >> we are looking at mental health, his prior history to see what the motive was. again, this is still the beginning but investigation. zach: now possible motives are underway.

the mourning for the lives lost and impacted our only beginning. >> there are no words to convey the depth of our sorrow to the families of the victims. san jose mourns with you. zach: police say they believe these were random acts of violence and that no individuals were specifically police adding more details will be released later. we will continue to attract developments. zach fuentes, abc 7 news. ama: thank you. dan: our team coverage continues with abc 7 reported dustin dorsey. you are getting reaction from the community. dustin: this community here in downtown san jose is in a word, distraught, really upset of what the events that took place here yesterday afternoon, right here on south 16th street, you could see a small memorial is growing in front of what we see as a mr. and misses pham's house, two

the victims and yesterday's horrific events. two communities are grieving after what some describe as a deadly rampage through milpitas and san jose thursday afternoon. san jose police say suspect kevin parkourana stabbed multiple people and attempt to -- and attempted to carjack another in the southern part of the city. afterwards, he allegedly fatally struck two people at 16th and santa clara in downtown san jose. one neighbor who chose not to be on camera said she was there moments after the couple was hit, steps from their home. >> i hear something, somebody cry, ah! and then i look from my window and i see two people crying, hey, come here, call the police, call the police! dustin: friday, neighbors dropped off flowers next to the scene where the two were killed. police are not releasing the names of the victims yet, but a sign reads "rest in peace, mr. and mrs. pham, we are praying for your family." >> they were always really nice, saying hi.

when i asked to pick lemons, they said, take as many as you want. it is sad. really sad. they did not deserve what happened to them. dustin: after the deadly crash, police say parkourana stabbed a final person in a parking lot in milpitas before he was arrested. the scene near his house was quiet friday, despite him being arrested with a hate crime in january, neighbors were shocked to learn he was a suspect in the violent night. >> heartbreaking. that he did it. and because he had mental health issues, so it just should not have happened. dustin: heartbreaking for city council members pam foley and omar torres, who represent the districts where the crimes occurred. they mourn the loss of the victims and hope changes can be made to prevent other tragedies in the future. >> it is a horrible tragedy that we have not really experienced in the city of san jose like this. this is awful. >> i know we cannot bring back the victims, but i hope justice is served for them.

dustin: when the names of the victims are officially released, we will bring you that information as soon as we get it. we would like to send our deepest, heartfelt prayers to everyone involved in this terrible tragedy. dustin dorsey, abc 7 news. ama: thank you. san mateo police are investigating a fight involving a knife and small group of summer school students at san mateo high school today. sky 7 was about the scene before 10:00 this morning. one student was hurt. the school nurse treated them before first responders arrived. there were no other injuries, and police say there is no threat to other students. dan: in the east bay, some are pushing back against the narrative that crimes committed by young people in oakland are on the rise, and they say they have the statistics to back that up. this comes in the wake of a string of arrests of young people in oakland. arms are hassan haskins story. >> by three young boys.

she is glad she made it. a neighbor saved him. for no reason, they just coldcocked her in the face. this is insane. hassan: at this week's meeting, there was lots of concern about crime, especially involving young kids. >> duty to start telling people to stop having kids or have them if they are ready for them. hassan: ov in oakland, the open police department announced the arrest of a large number of young people involved in more than 100 robberies. some community youth theaters are pushing back over the narratives around the oakland zoo youth -- around oakland's youth. >> cases like this that are shocking and concerning to the public, and we create a false and incorrect narrative that there is some sort of unprecedented explosion in crimes among teens, but it is simply not true. hassan: nicole is the urban executive director of peace movement, building youth leadership and ending youth

incarceration. she cites a study by the youth in criminal justice that shows there has been a drop in juvenile crime. >> there was a 96% reduction in crime rates among teens in california. hassan: the report also points to huge drops in homicide in gun violence in california youth over the past few decades and in the number of arrests. she says the recent criminal activity by oakland youth should not be ignored, but she claims it is the exception, not the norm. the other concern is how perception can turn into reality. >> when people start to believe those false narratives, we are telling adults to look out into the community for young people of color who look like they do not belong and to be afraid of them. when we do that, it has deadly, sometimes deadly consequences. accurate data is crucial to better understanding the issues and to come up with more effective solutions.

ama: alameda county district attorney pamela price says justice has been served in the case involving delonzo logwood, who was accused in a triple murder in 2008. two charges were dropped earlier this week by the alameda county district attorney's office after a key witness refused to testify. district attorney price says she is concerned there is not enough evidence to convict him for the third murder charge. >> the fact is, mr. logwood overturned by my predecessor, that is wrong, and we have been working to right that wrong. ama: she went on to say she believes two victims were murdered by a suspect or suspects who will not be held accountable. dan: today, san francisco city officials confirmed with abc 7 news that it targeted an initiative to disrupt oakland air drug markets in the tenderloin and south market neighborhoods will be expanded. the initiative began in

mid-april as a coordinated effort between police, public health and the department of emergency management. the mission is to coordinate engagement, enforcement and treatment, designed not only to disrupt drug markets but identify paths to recovery for those sick with substance use disorder. ama: still ahead, another home insurance company no longer writing new policies in california. dan: less than one hour ago, president biden addressed the nation to talk about the debt ceiling bill. what he said when abc 7 news at 5:00 continues.

ama: president biden is hailing the compromise of the measure that raises the borrowing limit and avoids a catastrophic default. it made his comments last hour in a nationally televised address. president biden: no one got everything they wanted, but the american people got what they

needed. we averted an economic crisis, economic collapse, we are cutting spending and bringing the deficits down at the same time. ama: president biden commended house speaker mccarthy and his negotiators for helping to get a deal done, adding that both sides operated in good faith and acted responsibly, putting the good of the country ahead of politics. the senate passed legislation last night, 63-46, the day after it overwhelmingly passed in the house. dan: in addition to the debt ceiling deal, the white house is celebrating another impressive jobs report. however, as abc news reporter reena roy explains, the numbers might not be a good thing when it comes to inflation. reena: the monthly jobs report is out from the department of labor, showing a robust 339,000 jobs added in may, much more than economists expected. the american job markets resilience has defined expectations -- defied expectations since the onset of the endemic. >> this report defies

expectations. there were a lot of headwinds to jump off to pull off numbers like these, higher interest rates and inflation. reena: jobs added in health care, construction and government. >> even though this is a robust job market, people are having a hard time finding the right job. reena: the report showing the unemployment rate rose to 3.7%, another closely watched number, wages, up .3% for the month, in line with economist expectations. higher wages can stoke higher inflation, but experts say the gains in the report are not alarming. this report could keep the federal reserve on its current path of raising interest rates, increasing your borrowing costs for a mortgage or your credit card, as part of its effort to cool down inflation. president biden hailed today as a good day for the american economy and american workers and painted it as evidence that an economic plan is working. reena roy, new york, abc news. ama: the stock market ended in the green today on news of the debt ceiling bill. the dow soared over 700 points,

dan: today, mayor breed and officials kicked off san francisco's 53rd annual pride month. about one million are expected to attend this year's celebration and parade in person. ama: they are expected to spend hundreds of millions. suzanne phan takes a closer look at what is in store and whether the city's ongoing challenges might impact festivities. suzanne: business is brisk right now for a lot of places in the castro district. as the bay area celebrates diversity and pride month, the castro district will see a sea of visitors and a lot of spending. >> pride helps a great deal. it is an economic boom for our city. suzanne: ask paul ellis, the manager of cliff's variety. people want to buy a lot of things. >> hats, boas, fans, t-shirts,

scarves, socks, whatever somebody is possibly going to want to have. and, of course, anything shiny. suzanne: he says the volume of visitors is not what it used to be before the pandemic, but -- >> there are a lot of european and other foreign tours to make a point of coming to san francisco. >> june is the first big month of the year, where you see, you know, like a 15% to 20% increase over the first tide months of the year. suzanne: the president of the castro merchants association says without a doubt, business booms during pride month. in 2019, as many as 50,000 marched in the parade as pride organizer believes, 30,000 will march this organizers expect $700 million in revenue to be generated just during pride celebration weekend this year, but some people are still nervous. >> we are a little nervous things are soft. our hotels are not sold out, which they have traditionally
