>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. >> i s front of the house and to the side over here admiring the work. ama: a couple killed in a south bay crime spree. we are seeing eerie surveillance video showing part of yesterday's rampage to get good evening. dan: yesterday afternoon. it started with tw carjackings in san jose, both victims were stabbed and have life-threatening injuries. thurned d with a couple struck and killed in san jose and a man stabbed to death in milpitas. lauren martinez spoke with a man who worked for that couple in san jose. reporter: chilling surveillance

video captured a killing rampage in the south bay. this is the moment the suspect is accused of ramming his stolen car into pedestrians on south 16th street in san jose thursday afternoon. two people, a couple, died. officials have not identified them but people in the neighborhood did. this man is covered in bruises. he said he was hit by the car while standing at the bottom of the ladder. he's a painter and contractor for the homeowners who lived next to this small parking lot. the homeowners were admiring the work when they were struck by the car. >> a u-turn. he hit the owner. reporter: outside the home, feet away from where they were hit, is a sign that says, we are praying for your family. neighbors, friends, and ones have been dropping off flowers and food for family members. >> they were at the old -- wrong

place at the wrong time. reporter: they were an older, giant -- gentle couple. >> heartbreaking. i couldn't sleep last night. reporter: less than an hour after the suspect hit the couple with his car, he proceeded to milpitas where he stabbed and killed a 27-year-old man in a smart and final parking lot. police say they believe these were all random acts of violence. tran says he's ok but he hurts for the lives lost. >> my body, my heart, everything. reporter: neighbors plan on correlating a candlelight vigil for the family in the coming days. lauren martinez, abc7news. dan: san jose police identified the suspect as 31-year-old kevin parker anna and said he acted alone. he's on probation and court documents reveal he has struggled with mental health. ama: in the east bay, pamela price says justice has been

served into cases involving alonzo logwood. our team has been covering the case extensively for months. he was accused of three murders in 2008. he's been in prison awaiting trial. a judge signed off on a request from the da's office to drop two of the murder cases after a witness refused to testify. this is the first d.a. price has spoken on camera about the court proceedings this week. >> the fact is, he was overcharged by my predecessor. that was wrong. we've been working mightily to write that wrong. ama: prosecutors are trying to work out a plea deal for the remaining murder charge. a judge would have to sign off on it which would take weeks. another home insurance company is no longer writing new insurance policies in california. allstate is pausing new policies so it can continue to protect current customers. the pause happen quietly and began last year.

state farm's announcement last week that it would stop issuing new policies in the state due to inflation, wildfires, and rising insurance costs. dan: it looks like we are in for a nice weekend for a change. ama: let's get to sandhya patel. sandhya: we will bring in summerlike warmth for a change. over the next 24 hours, here's what you can expect. most of them, the visibility is good. is -- fog is there. tonight, we have a little bit of fog. it is very patchy. here's what you can expect. 7:00, temperatures primarily in the 50's. by noon time, 70's inland. the warmth continues. 3:00, numbers in the mid 80's inland. into 7:00, if you have evening plans on saturday, 70's and 80's. continuation of that same with patchy fog going into midnight on sunday.

i do have the possibility of showers and thunderstorms. i will let you know win in just a few minutes. dan: a taqueria in san is closing after nearly 40 years in business. this san francisco chronicle reports they will serve their last meal on june 22. the mexican restaurant racked up $65,000 and pat -- back rent during the pandemic. the restaurants owner tells the chronicle that they were able to raise the money but the landlord is still moving forward with a plan for a new tenant. they are closing their business. let's go to the north bay. we've reported heavily on retail theft in san francisco. now it's happening in other parts of the bay area well. walgreens temporarily closed its doors sunday because of an uptick in shoplifting. the store is located on old redwood highway near highway 101. walgreens closed its doors for a dayn sunday after employees said they saw a dozeneople

shoplifting within 30 minutes time. the paper reports police arrested three women for suspicion of shoplifting at the same walgreens on thursday. ama: charges are not going to be filed against a los angeles angels player who got into a confrontation with an oakland a's fan. [inaudible] ama: a game in march shows anthony rendon appearing to grab the fan by his shirt and take a swing at him after the fan said something to him. the los angeles times reports police close the investigation this week after looking into potential assault and battery charges. mlb suspended rendon for four games and find him after its own investigation. churchill downs, the home of the kentucky derby, has suspended racing after 12 horses died within the past month. local animal advocates are calling for the same thing to happen in the bay area at golden gate fields which has seen multiple animal deaths this

year. tim johns has a look at the debate happening right here in california. reporter: at churchill downs, the horse racing season has come to an abrupt halt. after the death of a dozen animals over the past month, the famous home of the kentucky derby has suspended all racing as it re-examines safety measures. here in the bay area, local advocates are calling for the same to happen at golden gate fields. >> i'm surprised that so little has been done. reporter: she works with an activist group called direct action everywhere. she believes banning racing is the best way to stop deaths. >> that's just inherent to the industry. these horses are bread for racing, they are fed for racing, they are drug for racing. everything about the way they are raised is for profit, not for their well-being. reporter: 28 horses have died this year in california. eight of those have been at golden gate fields which did not answer our request for comment. >> it makes me wonder, what number of force deaths is

acceptable? reporter: the california horse racing board says the state has some of the most effective regulations in the country. they point out that many horse deaths are because of illness. in a statement, they california horse racing industry has implemented more than 50 safety measures to protect horses and riders. those efforts have led to a 55% reduction in equine fatalities since 2019. that doesn't go far enough for samantha fay. she's a bay area horse advocate who things even one death is too many. >> when you say that deaths are decreasing, yet public outrage is increasing, you are most certainly on the wrong side of history. reporter: activists would like to see places like golden gate fields shut down for good. they hope continued public pressure will ultimately help them achieve their goal. >> public scrutiny and negative

attention can create change. we have a lot of that in california as well. reporter: tim johns, abc7news. dan: president biden is hailing the passage of a compromise measure that raises the federal borrowing limit and avoids a catastrophic default. the president addressed the nation about this this evening. >> no one got everything they wanted. the american people got what they needed. we averted an economic crisis. an economic collapse. we are cutting spending and bringing the deficits down at the same time. dan: mr. biden commended kevin mccarthy and his negotiators for helping to get a deal done, adding that both sides operated in good faith. >> they acted responsibly and put the good of the country ahead of politics. the final vote in both chambers was overwhelming. far more bipartisan than anyone thought was possible. dan: the senate passed the legislation last night 63-36 a day after it passed in the house.

the president will sign the measure tomorrow, two days ahead of the deadline to avoid that default. after the president's speech, we spoke live with jackie spears. >> what we avoided was billion in cuts. we protected medicare, medicaid. both sides could really speak to a win. you have speaker mccarthy saying it was fabulous. we just heard the president speak about all that was saved in this deal. in the end, we are going to see a reduction in the great big debt that we have. it's $31 trillion. you will see $1 trillion were zeus -- reduced plus the 1.7 that the president has been successful in doing already. i think it's a win-win. frankly, that's what we should see more of coming out of congress. dan: the president says he will

sign this bill tomorrow. ama: expect to see orange protesters this weekend with multiple events planned in the bay area to recognize national gun violence awareness day. saturday, people attending the east oakland futures fest are encouraged to wear orange which is the color for the gun-control movement. more than 80 wineries are going to donate $10 for every bottle of wine sold on saturday. sunday, a march across the golden gate bridge will be held. that's expected to start at 11:00 a.m.. dan: a drag show set for an air force base gets canceled by the department of defense. the government explains why. >> we have to fight for people's rights but we have to have fun. tonight is about fun. ama: pride kicked off in san francisco. why the celebration is taking on a serious tone this year. dan: the snowpack is really starting to melt now. the river rising enough to trigger a flood warning into next week, coming up.

dan: angry woods -- words in front of an elementary school. there was a pride month book reading at sata coy elementary. some did not believe pride and delta b to q topics should be discussed at an elementary school. school board disagrees. >> they are just elementary kids. they should be left innocent at least until they grow up and they choose what's the right path for them. >> they do not have the right to make people afraid to be a child in this district because you are gay. dan: an instagram haze was created by a group of parents encouraging others to keep their kids home today to protest the pride assembly. local officials expect to see more of these protests.

another one is scheduled on tuesday in neighboring glendale. ama: a drag's show scheduled at a nevada air force base was canceled by the defense department. the show recognizes the importance of lgbtq service members. the do part and of defense said it was canceled due to not being in line with recent statements by the secretary of defense. austen said the department would not hose drag shows at bases or other installations. dan: in the bay area, san francisco pride is taking office of you tonight. ama: tara campbell reports, in the face of mounting attacks on lgbtq rights across the nation, the city's history as a beacon of hope is as important as ever. reporter: as promised, the party will go on. san francisco pride holding strong in face of mounting attacks on lgbtq rights across the nation. the aclu currently tracking roughly 500 bills taking aim at the community. >> we have to put away the

developers conference starts monday and there's anticipation that the company will unveil a lot of new tech. the announcement of a mixed reality headset is one of the items experts are expecting. also on the list, new operating systems with improved accessibility features for those with disabilities. apple could also roll out several new versions of the mac. we will find out on monday. a major disruption today at the port of oakland. a lack of workers forced all operations to seize at the ports to main terminals. the union isn't commenting due to what it's calling a media blackout while contract negotiations are underway. union workers have been working without a contract since last july. dan: the national weather service issued a flood warning in areas surrounding the merced river in yosemite national park. warm temperatures continue to melt this year's historic snowpack in the sierra. water levels expected to rise above flood stage at 10 feet. park visitors are advised be

careful near the riverbanks. santa is keeping a close eye on conditions in yosemite. ama: let's get to her now. sandhya: the reason why it's not only going to be warm but we are not getting much of a break. let's take a look at that flood warning for yosemite river. it's until wednesday at midnight. we have flood advisories for the eastern portion of the sierra. you will notice there. temperatures at yosemite, upper 80's saturday and sunday without summerlike warmth. that's the reason the snowpack is melting so fast and the rivers are running high. it's expected to flood. minor flooding is expected. it's just over nine feet. 10 feet is flood stage. here's our warm upcoming. this is just taking you through the day tomorrow. it's not just yosemite but also are parts of our inland areas that will feel that warmth. high pressure is building in. that's what is going to bring us
